WII Game System

Just wondering what you other mommas think of a WII game system for my soon to be four year old. My mom wants to buy him one but I'm not sure if it's age appropriate. We try to be really careful what we expose him too cause he's a total boy that loves play fighting and pretending to be a soldier even if we don't give him access to any play or real guns or knives. It's so hard these days to shelter them, our kids are exposed to so much too early! Let me know your experiences. Thanks! =)

What can I do next?

Of any gaming system, it is the best. It is something that the child has to get UP and do actively.

I do agree, though, that it is not age appropriate for a 4yo.

We have one. It is probably age appropriate for about 6+ because their little hands are not really big enough to use the controller without help (it may fly out of his hand even with the strap).

Hope it helps.

We bought the Wii system when it first came out a little over a year ago and we love it. Our daughter is 13. We all play the Mario Cart, Wii sports package, and Guitar Hero. DD's friends love it as well. It makes for some fun family time at our house. We got extra remotes, extra guitar, the boxing set and none of it has gone to waste or collected dust. We compete as a family with all the Sports.

She also has SIMS game, Harry Potter and a few others. DD is not into the shoot em up games.

If you already have a Gamecube system, the games you have for that system will also work on the Wii.

We are glad we have the system.

We don't have a WII yet, but I haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't love it. It's supposed to be extremely family friendly because it allows everyone to play together unlike other electronics where kids have their noses down and don't ever look up. It's probably like anything with the ratings, though. You just have to watch for the types of games they play just as we have to watch which t.v. shows are most appropriate. Personally, I still believe that nothing takes the place of the great outdoors. I would plan on creating time limits from day one if you get one. They get HOOKED! My son is now 9 and we got him a DS when he was a little younger. He LOVES it, but he would stay on it all day if I let him. I have to limit his time on it. What I like about it, though, is that he can take it on the go and play it in the car or at places like the waiting room in the doctor's office, etc.. I know, however, that he would trade his DS in anyday for a WII. I'm sure the WII is much more entertaining.

I have no doubt that a 4 year old can figure out how to play. They are so smart! I know a couple of people who have little ones that are able to play. Kids are so amazing the way they figure electronics out at such a young age! But, it might be a thought to give him something to look forward to when he's a little older. The saying is that if you give someone steak, they will never want or appreciate hamburger meat again. Lol! Progression is always a wonderful thing. If you do decide to get one, my advice is to go into a store and have him test out the controls to see if the size is compatible and if the games are appropriate for him.

Good luck! He sounds like a lucky little guy!

Hold off on the video games as long as you possibly can. Get him some army toys and cowboy and indian gear. I know research has shown that video games cam effect cognitive development. Our son got a PS2 at age 7 and it can be a huge struggle. Also, the games and equipment are really expensive. My mom wanted to buy one and so she just keeps it at her house, of course he LOVES to go over there. Hope this helps.

Hi A.!!

We actually just bought a WII two weeks ago and with the right games I think its great for the little ones! We bought the Mario Olympics and its tons of fun - there are soooo many sports to choose from - some are super easy and some are a little challenging. I think its a ton of fun - and the whole family gets into it so its good times!
I think you would love it as much as he would!

My ten year odl son has a WII and has had one for over a year now. It is very neat because you get to get up and get active but I wouldn't recommend it for a four year old. Each game you ahve to know what to do and what buttons to push and the whole concept thing about it. It would probably be confusing to him. With that being said I would definatley recommed the Little leaps r V-Smile video game systems. they are meant for younger age childrena nd EVERY gane teaches your children. They learning video game systems and easy to get them started up. they have games form age one all the way to about 8 I think. When you get 4 year old games tehy are pacifically menat for teaching that age group. My daughter has a V-Smile and I got it for her when she was 6 months old. She is now 2 1/2 and loves it. I will say it is best to interact with your child while they are playing because their chances of learning increase that way. You talk to them and count with them and pretty paly the game with them and it also gives you special bonding time. Good luck to you on this...you can find these at Walmart for sure

Get one! I bought one for my husband (b/c he loves video games)last summer and our daughter plays it as much as he does. We have several games, but we play the basic sports package games the most. We often have game night and go bowling or play golf and it's a lot of fun for all of us. I recently bought Wii fit for myself and I'm loving it.

Personally I think 4 is a little young for the WII.
My own hubby who's a game system fanatic took the WII back after 2 days because he just couldn't get the hang of it or have fun playing it. I think if you take the time to show him how it really works, which will take time, he'll probably like it.
My advice would be to try a Playstation, X-box 360 or even the new Nintendo DS which is a really fun one the younger kids seem to enjoy and then try the WII a few years later when he can really understand how it works.
