Wierd Pain...Don't Want to Overreact

I have this weird pain under the left side of my rib cage. It's almost immediate after eating. I feel it as soon as I drink ANYTHING! We're talking as soon as I swallow...there it is! After eating...it takes a couple of minutes...but I won't finish any meal. It feels better if I massage it...but it will take anywhere from a half hour or more for it to subside. It helps if I lay flat...which I hate doing after I eat.
I had gastric bypass five months ago...but this isn't in or near my pouch. I've googled this type of pain and I can find people with the same condition...but no diagnosis.
My family wants me to go to the Dr. or back to my bypass specialist. If it's nothing...I don't want to waste time or money.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks Moms!

I have that wierd pain quite often. I first started getting it when I was pregnant with my first child. It was an air bubble trapped. The doctor told me to lay on my left side and it would subside. Sometimes it is so painful I can't walk. Lately when I get it I take a gasX and lay on my left side. It goes away after a little while.

Would need a little more info, but sounds like could be a hiatal hernia. I have one too and have had for 4 1/2 years ever since my son was born.

You might want to consider going back to the surgeon that did your gastric bypass. You really should be sure you don't have leakage from that pouch. (i'm not trying to scare you) Im sure you surgeon explained to you that a leakage can be deadly. (if he didn't he should have) If I were you, I would at least call & talk to his nurse & explain this to her & ask if it's a possible sign. Hopefully not, but my advise is be sure it isn't, then go from there. I would check into this ASAP for precaution.
Usually most surgeons remove the gallbladder when doing a gastric bypass (or they used too) so i'm not real sure it might could be gallstones, but if he didn't it might.
Best Wishes! & I hope it is nothing to be concerned over.

i had a simular pain.i am pregnant but never had a bypass. i was told the pains were my "guts" re adjusting to make room for the growing baby...they finally went away after a couple of months. it might be the same situation for you...your guts readjusting to the smaller stomach. i would definatly go or at least call and find out if its normal...you also dont want to underreact and prevent something that this might be a warning sign of. find out for peace of mind if anything.

I think you should call your gastric bypass dr to explain your symptoms. If the pain is associated with eating, there is a good chance that it is related to your surgery.
Usually, follow ups should be covered in the surgery cost.
Even if it's not, you should discuss it with the dr. If the dr feels you should be seen, do it!! Good luck and God bless

I have had similar pain before with eating anything but the symptoms weren't as immediate but happened about 30 in. after. It was a dull pain not stabbing but enough to be painful. I took advil that helped but never took the pain away. I finally went to the Dr. after about 2 mo. when I couldn't take it anymore to find out it was spasms in my colon. On the left side right under the ribs is where the colon arches. I had to take muscle relaxers and eat a very bland diet for a few weeks and it finally went away. I still have trouble every now and then. Not sure what actually caused it. Hope this helps and your pain goes away quickly. Don't hesitate to go to the Dr. if it goes on for too long, gets worse, or keeps you from eating enough to be healthy.

Hi there, I actually put a post up a few months ago about the same sort of pain. It's on the upper left side of my abs behind my rib cage. WHat type of pain...sharp, inflamed? Mine usually feels inflamed and very rarely feels sharp but for a few seconds. I have actually had a colonscopy, an ultrasound, x-ray, blood tests, and nothing crucial has come up. I have always held my boys on the left side and thought that maybe I was pulling a muscle or something. I would love for it to be that easy. This pain has been occuring for about 3 yrs now.
Maybe you should seek a gastro specialist? Well I hope all gets better...let me know.

RD,
That sounds a lot like gall bladder pain. You really need to get it checked. And you might have to have it removed.

Could be Gallstones. You can look it up on webmd.com and see if your symptoms fit.

The only experience I have had with something like that ended up being gallstones. I was in the same position with not wanting to waste money. When I first started having gallstone attacks it was mild and sort of felt like a bad case of gas. Over the next couple of months it came more frequently and more violently. Finally after having one that lasted 7 hours (they normally lasted 30 min to an hour previous to this episode) I went to my doctor... and yep, gallstones AND pancreatitis. So I needed surgery, didn't have the money... so I tried to control the attacks with an extremely low fat diet and that kind of worked. I lasted a month with only 1 mild attack but then the mother of all attacks hit me. I went straight to the hospital and found out my gallbladder caused another pancreatitis and had to wait a couple of days for my pancreas to get happy again so they could remove my gallbladder. So I would encourage you to go see a doctor, IF it is gallstones it will get worse and worse and it can affect other organs as well. Its not something to mess with.

My first thought was the gall bladder but if you had the bypass you most likely also had the gall bladder removed. The Dr. seems to be the best thing to do. The Dr. that did your surgery--he might have a better idea of what it might be.Good luck.

Hi RD,

Let me ask you a few questions, how long has the pain been going on? does the pain feel like a jabbing pain, and does it always feel better after massaging that area? if this pain has been going since surgery then you need to go back definetley. if the pain has just come about of late, what were you doing when it happened? it sounds muscle related caused by trapped gas or , one way to know.. when you apply pressure does it feel stiff or tender. tender means something more than a muscle getting caught between the rib cage or gas, if it stiff then thats whats happening. which can be treated by hot water bottle and massage and aleve(helps relax the muscle and relax the stomach muscles), if there is any bruising or discoloration go to the doctor esp. if your short of breath immediately.
wish you the best...

That is a common symptom of gall bladder attacks, you may or may not have stones, but could be suffering from gall inflamation. If the pain is not severe then you can probably continue to go w/out a dr. visit, however if it continues to be bothersome I would go see a dr., you may need to have it removed. FYI...google gallbladder attack remedies, you can find some helpful natural remedies that may help you in the mean time.

See a gastroenterologist. Even if it turns out to be gas, it's not a waste of time to learn more about how your body functions, especially since you've had the surgery.

I also had gastric bypass. After about 8 months after surgery, the pain started. I went to doctor after doctor. Finally I was diagnosed and had my gallblatter removed. Good health and luck.
