Whole House Water Purification Systems

We are looking into getting a whole house water purification system. We have community well water that is extremely hard, and we don't really like the taste. Right now we are drinking a lot of bottled water. Does anyone have any experience with what to look for, what to stay away from, any suggestions, or even any good websites to research? We are aware that these systems are costly, and therefore trying to do some homework before we decide anything. We've had the pushy salesman in that doesn't want to leave until you sign. :)

Thanks!

We have one. The whole system cost us around $4000. Its been worth it because my kids have eczema and the hard water triggers that.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the salt for the tank runs $5-8 a bag. Our system holds 6 bags. Hubby likes to by 12+ bags at a time of a cost of around $90. I like to just pick a bag up every week when we're at Walmart or the grocery store to keep it topped off ...

I also prefer the bags of salt vs the salt blocks. The salt blocks seemed to make the water too salty. We also tried the blue bag (some type of rust reducer) HATED it! I dumped the whole container in the yard and went to buy more, without talking to hubby! We now use the yellow Diamond brand.

So things to keep in mind.
1. How accessible is the salt?
2. Budget in about a bag of salt a week.
3. Can you take it with you? Our system is detachable, and when we moved, it came too.

We're on a well too and we have a Culligan system. I really like it!

We are on a deep well, so we have a water softener for the whole house....... you might want to separate your outside water because of the salt, if you use it for watering the lawn etc......... We also have some rust in the water so we use the "rust out" type salt for it. You have to check your system to see what type of salt to use....... they sell pellets, rock and block salt for systems. We are a small family and use 50 lbs of salt every month or so. We own ours, it's less expensive in the long run but if you have any problems the rental might be something to look into.

We also have an RO (reverse osmosis) system for our drinking water and ice cubes.... just remember the RO system uses 3 gallons of regular water to make 1 gallon of filtered water. We love the RO system it uses filters to purify the water even more......... Go to a good plumbing supply company not a chain store for information...... MTS Supply Company in Schererville, IN was very helpful. I know they deliver to IL area too......... I looked up their info for you: 2112 US Highway 41 Schererville, IN 46375 ###-###-####

We have Barrington city water which is from wells. We had installed a reverse osmosis water system by angel company in Barrington. The water tastes great. We only have it for drinking.

Whatever u do don't call rainsoft! They are the pushy sales people that won't leave until u sign. Came at 7:30 stayed til 9:30 PM ended up costing a lot of $ so NOT worth it!

My husband and I have the Kinetico RO system for drinking and we have a water treatment system for our regular water (baths, washer, etc). I love our RO system, but the regular system is ok. It takes out our iron, which is high, but doesn't take it completely out. I love the RO system and would recommend it, but I really don't like the regular water system and would suggest looking around. Oh and be careful of these places too. A lot of the times they will charge to come out to adjust things on your system. We got charged $45 for this once and refused to do it again. If you do get something, look into getting the ones that are rented. That way when something does go bad, they have to fix/replace it at their own cost. My parents pay $45 per month for one because they have black sulfer and it broke on them so Culligan came out and replaced it at their cost since it's rented. That's my opinion. I wish I would have rented one. Would have been better for us in the long run!!!
