Well i have a vicks humidifier that is several years old now that i have been using as white noise for my 3 and now 1 year old little girls. It has 3 different fan settings and the highest one is pretty loud and gives me peace of mind that my 3 year old will not wake the baby. The problem is i don't think they make them as loud anymore so when this one stops working.....then what? Do you moms have any suggestions for a white noise machine that you like?

What can I do next?

All I have used since my daughter was born, 8 years ago, is a fan. An oscillating fan.
Use it for my son too, and he is 4.
I still use it everyday for naps and bedtime.
ALL these years.

Simple.
Easily replaceable too.

I have had this SAME fan, all these years. 8 years. But I actually have owned this same fan, for at least 5 years prior.
I use it everyday.
Still works.

I use the white noise setting on our alarm clock. We can make it as loud or quiet as we need.

I use a $15-20 dollar box fan. With little ones you might need to hang it up from the ceiling.

We have these in my 2 and 3 year olds rooms.

Not sure if it the same model as ours are a few years old, but we run them for 12+ hours a day between naps and bedtimes (and almost constantly as newborns cause we couldn't remember to turn them off) and they are still going strong. I like that they are small enough to travel with and have different noise settings (we use the loudest and have them right next to their beds).

Just curious,, have you tried not using one at all to see if they can sleep well enough?

Have you tried a box fan or would that cause issues with the need of a humidifier? It's what we use for white noise. I did buy a white noise maker on Amazon for a trip one time. I think you'll find something if you search on amazon for "white noise maker".

When my son was a newborn we turned on the radio to a classical station. He loved in but anything else seemed to wake him up. I also used small fans that you can purchase at home depot and just point them at the wall. I also have a humidifier for my son that I purchased at wal-mart. I got myself a silent one at walgreens and it is a big difference.

This is the one that we have used for our daughter since about 3 weeks. We used my husbands phone that had an app on it for white noise before that. This had numerous settings and the sound volume dial is nice also.

in our son's room he has a small table top fan that is pretty loud when on high. We have it on the floor facing away from his bed, just for noise. our daughter and my husband and I have an actual White Noise Machine in our room. It is loud enough, it is not so loud that it would drown out noise in the room with us but it is good enough, we can't sleep without it. We bought ours on Amazon.com and searched 'white noise machine', it was $50 and is a small, round, white machine. love it!

i echo the box fan idea- it's also great because i can't STAND to be hot at night - the colder the better.

I have a HomeMedics radio/alarm clock/white noise thingy that even throws the time up onto the ceiling if you want it to. It's got either 6 or 8 (I can't remember) different sounds to choose from & a volume switch as well. I always use the one called 'summer night' which just sounds like crickets if I'm having a hard time falling asleep.

I found it online, here's a link through google with a bunch of different stores that carry it & the price:

clarifying white noise: White noise does not have music or words. Leaving music and words on for the whole night can result in less than restful sleep. Read that somewhere in an article about sleep issues.

I have used different humidifiers in the past for white noise. With my kids, we have a CD player in their room and we have it set to play the same lullabye CD over and over again. It has played since their births. Hopefully they won't still need it in college!
