I would like to know if there are any moms out there who know how to remove the white hard stains in the armpit area of t-shirts. My husband works in the outside in the heat and now his shirts are very hard with white stains in the armpit area from sweating, and I have no idea how to get them out. My regular detergent does not do it. any suggestions!!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of the moms who replied. I bought oxy clean and arm and hammer laundry soap, so I will be trying them both to see which one works better. Again, I truly am appreciative for all of the responses! Thanks moms!!!

Fels Naptha Soap (Bar) is the best at removing stains of all sorts. I've even had luck with it removing a stained item that has gone through the wash & dryer! It may be hard to find, do google search "where to buy Fels Naptha Soap". It's actually laundry soap in a bar form. I use to pre-treat stains with warm to hot water depending on fabric and rub bar onto stain. I have a bar that is probably 12 years old (never goes bad). It's a 10 star stain remover. Also, I would suggest Oxy Clean - soak stained item (rub some onto white shirt - wouldn't work it directly into colored clothing - it will remove color!) Let soak 15 minutes (in washer or container).

I would recommend trying Oxy-Clean. I was in a store once and opened one of those solid air freshener tubs to smell it and it poured this nasty brown sludge out instead all down the front of my favorite shirt! (obviously it had melted) I rushed home and tried Shout, lemon juice, baking soda, and nothing even touched it. Then I tried Oxy-Clean, but despite scrubbing it right on the stain it still didn't come out...until I let it soak for over an hour and then the stain was completely gone! Great stuff!!

I have found Arm and Hammer laundry detergent works great on this problem. The liquid is best. My hisband and son both work out doors year round and come home reaking of diesel fuel and body odor. I set my machine on presoak first and it not only removes the white stiff underarm stains but it is the only detergent I have found thatalso removes the odors and leasve a great fresh scent. I have also found that certain deodarants make the problem worse than others Arm and hammer deodorant and also Degree deodorant tend not to make them leave they white stiffs stains as much as the other brands...
Good Luck

Hi Christina,
I tried this exact thing on the shirts of my boyfriend (now husband) several years ago.

We use Shaklee laundry products and (L and Nature Bright). We used those 2 products and let them soak for several days and they removed.

If you are interested, you can check out my website

I use oxy-clean. My husband is a contractor and is always outside and his shirts can get dinge. I soak them in hot hot water and oxy-clean. If you have a top load you can put the shirts, white socks etc. in the washer fill up with the hot water, oxi-clean and just let it soak for a while. You can also follow the directions and make a paste, etc. I use oxi-clean in ever wash load. i add one scoop to every load, I have a front load washer and a water softener. With out a top load and no water softener you may need to add more or add a scoop of water softener powder you can find it in the laundry aisle . I think it works great.

Hi C.,
Put a cup two a cup and a half of white vinegar into your wash load.
Or you can soak the under shirt in the vinegar for about ten minutes and then wash.

Good luck,

One thing you can try and is a good alternative to bleach is regular white vinegar - it doesn't fade colors. A lot of chefs use this to keep their white chef's coats bright - and there's a lot of sweating going on in a kitchen!!

I don't know how to get rid of them, but I know how to not cause them. The stains are from the aluminum in his anti-persperant. If you get a deodorant from the health food store this problem should stop. They work differently with all people chemistry, so if you get one that doesn't work well try and try again. Good luck, G. C.,

Have found a WONDERFUL way to get out the armpit stains!! My husband has allows had a horrible problem with it - to the extent that a couple people at his work had commented on it at work! Use Oxy-Clean versitile. Follow the directions on the container for "Pre-Treat Stain Removal" to create the solution. Pour enough of the solution on the area to saturate. Then, use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the solution into the buildup. Let the shirts sit for 10 minutes but don't let the solution dry on them(I try to accomplish this by treating the shirts and then working on loading the rest of the laundry - that way I don't forget to come back and start the washing machine! lol). Then, wash as normal. I saved shirts that had been washed and dried for YEARS!! There were only one or two that had to be retreated to get it all out and I think that I just missed treating that little spot. Also, I did try using the Oxy-Clean Laundry spray and it doesn't work to get the armpit stains out - so save your money.

My husband has also (since treating the shirts) switched to Certain Dri antipersperant (sp). It has helped a GREAT deal, but he still gets the build up from time to time.

Good luck!!

-K.
