Whirlpool Cabrio Washer & Dryer

I'm looking for a new washer & dryer and I was wondering if anyone had a Whirlpool Cabrio? It's high-efficiency--but a top loader instead of a front loader. I decided against a front loader because you have to leave the door open to prevent mildew/smell. We have a laundry room, but the open door would get in the way. They're regularly $1460/pair, but they are on sale at Nebraska Furniture Mart for $1060/pair. Thoughts??

I just got a new washer and dryer (didn't want to, but the old dryer pooped out) and I did lots of research and talked to lots of people. I found three people with Cabrios who said they didn't think they cleaned very well. All of them complained about gunk left on their larger loads. Also, they said what I read in reviews -- very wrinkled, tangled clothes. I avoided them for those two reasons. One person did tell me when she does smaller loads it's not so bad. I went with front loaders, but I can see how they don't fit everywhere. My daughter owns a condo and her laundry room is teeny tiny and no way would front loaders fit in there. So someday she'll probably be going with a cabrio or something similar.

Our babysitter/former daycare provider just got these and had to return the first washer. She said it was extremely noisy. Sounded to me like an engine defect, but Sears was good about replacing it. Not sure about the second one. She may just have had a lemon, though. Have you checked the reviews on sites like Sears and Home Depot?

We ended up getting the Maytag Centennial line (also top loader), which is in the same price category, and have been really happy with the washer and dryer. Knock on wood, had them about a year now with no problems.

I have the Cabrio- we got it about two years ago and I've had good luck with it. Mine is not noisy, but there was a learning curve. For example, I learned:

Do not put jeans on the high spin- it will make them super wrinkled- low spin, low heat on the dryer and they turn out perfect.

Yes, larger loads will go off balance much more easily. I am careful about how I load sheets, beach towels, etc. and that seems to have solved the problem.

Whites take over an hour to wash. Not sure why, but they do turn out nicely!

Generally, I am very satisfied with the pair. The dryer is done in about the same amount of time as the washer, so laundry day goes faster. The only complaint I have is that the HE soap is much more expensive!

Good luck!

I suggest, going to the Sears website, and checking out the reviews there.

There was a similar question about a month ago. The Cabrio got bad customer reviews. Do a search on google.

I have the Cabrio.
Hopefully the 2ng generation machines are better than the first.
Mine has had the top computer go out twice.
The shock absorbers have gone out
If the motor gets coins stuck in it, it dies, you MUST clean out pockets!!
I have had mine for 5 years and had the repair man out 6 times. Each time it was more than one day to fix. Always something has to be ordered. I end up going ot the laundrymat when the washer goes on the fritz.

I still have 3 kids at home, so it gets used every other day to every day.
It is not super quiet. The spin cycle is loud.
It gets off balance with every heavy duty load.

If you do get it get the repair plan because you will use it. I intend to re-up my repair plan this November when it is due.

It is efficient, it cleans well, it is pretty. It drives me NUTS!!!!!
