I am seriously looking into getting an exercise machine to help aid in loosing weight and have no idea what to get? Does anyone have a suggestion or can tell me what the best machine would be for long term and give me the best work out a bike, treadmill, or an elliptical? If so which brand and type if possible there are soooooo many out there and it makes it much more difficult when you don't have a clue and don't have a lot of money to just buy anything. Also if you know the best place to purchase one as well. Thanks up front to all of you and hope I didn't ask too many questions.

What can I do next?

Have you ever looked into getting the Wii Fit? I swear by mine. I use it a few days a week that I know I can't schedule in gym time. It was just a suggestion. I agree, way too many options for machines but it's knowing what you will really use. I begged my hubby to get me the elliptical machine and told him over and over again I would use it. I think I used it for a month and it hasn't been touched since.

I have a treadmill that I used for about 6 years until running on it, on an incline, started to hurt my lower back. I went to 24 Hour Fitness for the free 24 days to try equipment out and found I like the eliptical. Not only is the eliptical easy on the joints, it is supposed to help build core strenghth. I purchased both pieces of equipment at Sears at a significant discount because they had been previously purchased and returned to Sears -- As Sears honors the warranty as if you purchased them new, I strongly suggest this method of purchase. With the eliptical, we also purchased it on the Sears credit card for 12 months same as cash.

S.,
All three will burn about the same calorie wise, the stationary bike a little less, but all about the same. If you are looking for long term, best for your joints, you should seriously consider an elliptical. The elliptical has no impact points, so there is no jarring of your joints. I would highly advise you to go to several different stores and try out what they have and see what you like best, because in the long run that is going to be what is most important! Something you like and enjoy doing. I personally have a Precor EFX 546, but they are on the more expensive end, look for what suits you best.
Best wishes and good luck! J.

Hi S.,
I actually have different advice than was requested, but it comes from experience!!! We have tried buying a couple of machines and they all end up getting dust covered and unused. I would really recommend going to a gym instead. My husband just joined 24 hour fitness for $27 a month - they are awesome. All workout machines, classes, pool included. And, the babysitting room is only $2 per child for 2 hour periods. You will probably end up getting much more bang for your buck going that route. Plus, since they are 24 hours, it is just as convienet as if you were at home - except with babysitters!!!!
Hope you find the right solution for you! D.

S. - Your best bet, in my oionion, would be to join a gym for a month or so, and try out the equipment. Some people love treadmills, others find them boring. Likewise, some swear by elipticals, and many find they awkward or h*** o* the hips/knees. I know 24 hour fitness offers 24 free days (not sure the terms, but a friend of mine joined and they offered me 24 free days, no obligation). In the long run, it's better to try before you buy so you know what equipment will work for you. I know the YMCA in Olathe is offering free registration right now and does not require a contract, so you could just pay for 1 month and give it a go. (They also have child watch included with membership so you can go with the kids.)
Also, when you decide to purchase, consider Craigslist or pre-owned. Many people buy something, decide they don't like it, and eventually sell it. Also, depending on where you go, floor models can be a great deal. Good luck on your search and in getting fit!

Since they are all designed as a cardio workout, I think it really depends on your preference and what you'll be motivated to do the most often and also how much space you have. You can get a pretty decent exercise bike for around $100 at walmart. I just got a small bike since I don't have enough space for a treadmill and I prefer biking anyway.

If you don't have a lot of money, I'd invest in a good pair of tennis shoes and try and work out outside with walks and maybe jogging. Even when it gets cold you can get a good pair of insulated pants and a running jacket -- remember when you are exercising the temp feels about 20 degrees hotter than actual temp (excluding the wind factor....if it is really really windy I stay inside!)

Another option if you already own a regular bicycle is to get a bike trainer - it holds the back wheel of your bike off the ground so you can use it as a stationary bike indoors when the weather won't cooperate. Any bike shop can help you, and they run from $150 on up depending on how fancy you want to get.

Remember that if you go the machine route, whatever you buy will need maintenence - so factor that cost in. You might try and see if a local gym will give you a free week pass, then try out their machines and see what you like best. It is all about what you think you will enjoy and what you will keep up.

Finally, if you have Time Warner Cable, they have FIT TV and an exercise on demand channel. Again the only investment you need is a good pair of shoes and maybe some hand weights and/or bands, and you get great variety. I usually DVR a few shows just to have on hand.

Remember - its not the machine that makes the woman! Congratulations on making a decision to improve your fitness and I wish you an abundant and blessed 2009!

I purchased the cheapest elliptical at walmart and had it for over 4 years now, I use it 3 times a week and sometimes 5. Love it! And yes, it is still working.
My husband bought an expensive treadmill that broke twice and nobody use it, it is heavy and boring....
I would suggest to go to dicks or sports authority and try them all and find the kind of equipment that you would stick to and then check craigslist or walmart for use or cheaper prices. You never know when you'll get bored and want somethign else. I alternate eliptical with a video of the crunch pilates, it is moe fun when you don't do every day the same stuff.
Best of luck! Great resolution!!!
