When my husband gets home from his deployment we want to ttc #2. We had our son in NC so I have no experience with an OB drs in San Diego. I currently live in Poway and am seeing Dr. Maresh for my regular yearly visits. He seems like a wonderful doctor but I have yet to find anyone who has seen him during pregnancy/delivery. He delivers out of Pomerado hospital, however I have been leaning towards Sharp Mary Birch. Has anyone had experience at either Pomerado Hospital or Sharp Mary Birch? What were your likes/dislikes? Would you deliver there again? Also which OB dr did you see during your pregnancy and what did you like/dislike about them. I had a not so great experience with my OB in North Carolina with my son and so I'd like to find a doctor who is a bit more personable this next time around. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much everyone for all of your advice! I certainly have a lot to think about. There are so many options. But I have plenty of time since my husband won't be home for quite some time-I know I am planning way ahead :)

Thanks again!! It is all very much appreciated!

I spent almost 1 full month at Pomerado before I delivered my daughter. I LOVED it there! It was like staying at a hotel. My own private room, DVD player, micro, fridge, jaccuzi tub and shower, you get to order each meal off of a special menu, and a snack lady that comes by twice a day with a cart full of drinks and snacks to choose from. The nurses and staff were wonderful. They really took good care of me. I HIGHLY recommend them.

I also HIGHLY recommend the lactation consultants at Pomerado. They came and visited me everyday after my DD was born by c-section for every feeding and helped me out. Then when both DD and I returned to the hospital 2 days after being released (I had to have an emergency bowel obstruction surgery and DD had to go back under the lights for jaundice) they came and visited me downstairs on the surgery floor everyday, gave me TONS of pumping and breastfeeding supplies, and checked on my baby everyday and gave me updates on how she was doing.

Also the NICU and perinatologist at Pomerado are top notch. They were excellent at explaining everything to hubby and I and keeping us updated on how she was doing, etc.

I just can't rave enough about Pomerado Hospital and the staff there. I have recommended all my friends to deliver there.

I would not recommend Scripps La Jolla. My friend delivered there and I was blessed to have been asked to be there for the delivery of her 3rd child. She ended up having a c-section and they moved her to a different room each night of her 4 day stay. Sucky!

My OB is Dr. Karen Kohatsu. I had a pretty risky pregnancy and she held my hand through it all. I see her partner Dr. Le whenever Dr. Kohatsu is busy and she is wonderful too. Their practice is called Poway Womens Care and they are located in Rancho Bernardo.

Sharp Mary Birch for Women is great! I've had two boys there. My OBgyn is Dr. Colleen McNally at Women's Health -- she's GREAT!!! Anyone in her practice is great.
you could go to Sharp.com to find a physician that would practice at SMBHW.

I work at Sharp and am a little biased...but love the whole system.

Hi S.-
I LOVED Mary Birch!!!!! I had both of my kid's there. My daughter was an emergency c-section and where things were rushed and very much an emergency, they handeled everything with such compassion, urgency, & professionalism. I was so scared but they really calmed me down, (and no, it wasn't the drugs!)They made sure that my husband was part of the process as well. My son's birth was a v-back and they really respected my wishes to attempt the vbac w/o drugs. Everyone was so kind. I loved my room as well. My OB/GYN now is Dr. Leslie Grey out of Sharp Rees Stealy-Grossmont. I really like her but know It would be a hike from Poway. Sharp- Rees Stealy's OB delivers by team so the Dr you get is whoever you get that is on that night. My experiences are that all the Dr's do a great job with the delivery, though there a couple that I won't see again for regular appts. If you want to know those names, please email me off-line.
Good luck, welcome to San Diego and Congratulations!!

I delivered at Pomerado, it was Great. I had my own private room from check in to check out. When I was doing all my research I didn't like that Mary Birch will move you after delivery to a common room, meaning there can be two moms per room. I wanted that first 24 hour period to truly be a positive bonding time for my husband and I with our baby, and didn't want to share a room with another mommy and daddy and baby. I hear it is a fabulous hospital too, but I guess you could say I was selfish, in wanting my own space. I had a very positive experience at pomerado, all the nurses were fabulous and patient.

I had my first child at Sharp Mary Birch and had a terrible experience there. A large part was caused by the delivering OB which was random OB on that night from Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo. It was so bad though that I considered never having another child, and if I did it certainly would never be in a hospital again. When I did get pregnant again with my second child I went to Best Start Birth Center in Hillcrest. My third child was also born there 8 weeks ago. I can't say enough good things about them! They were also great when I misscarried between my 2nd & 3rd.

Hi, interestingly enough, Dr. Maresh delivered my now 19 year old at Pomerado in 1990!!! I love Pomerado Hospital and would highly recommend!! It's small and very personal. He was not real big on pain control at that time and I never got the epidural I wanted!!!! Best to you

S. - I had my first in NJ last year, so I'm in the same boat as you. Through another mom's group, I found out about Dr. Sudabeh Moein who practices and delivers at Pomerado Hospital. I live in PQ, so I didn't want to get too far from home. Dr. Moein is very friendly and professional, and she will support my desire to have a natural birth when we have #2 (we plan to TTC in about 1-2 months from now).

I delivered at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla and they were FANTASTIC. I have heard really great things about Sharp Mary Birch too. Both places you get your own room, which is so nice. I think either one of those two would be fine. I haven't heard anything about Pomerado- if you have a choice I would def. do Sharp MB or Scripps La Jolla.

I hear Doctor Biter (Encinitas) is great. I personally delivered at Best Start Birthing Center (they do water births there) and had a great experience.
