Which Cloth Diapers to Use

I use all Bumgenius 3.0. They are awesome---one size--they grow with the baby. I am very impressed with them. They don't leak and are easy to wash/dry. I registered for all of them online at www.cottonbabies.com

I've used quite a variety. I liked the prefolds for at home, and by far they are MUCH cheaper route to go. I love my Fuzzi Bunz and if you can go just that route you would need about 20 or so smalls and about the same for mediums (my 2.5 year old still fits fine in mediums so unless you have a larger baby/toddler you'd only need the two sizes) if you wash every other to every third day. If you get some small FBs and some prefolds, you could get 10 or so prefolds and 2-3 covers and use the FBs for outings and such, that's what I did until I could slowly build a bigger supply. I like the Bum Genius but not when he was small, same goes for other "one sizes" they were simply HUGE on him until about 5/6 months or so. For the Fuzzi Bunz you only need as many inserts as the amount of diapers you buy. They are a one-use diaper so don't order more inserts than diapers. I love Fuzzi Bunz. They are my favorites. But I also use fitteds that I made myself and wool soakers. You can read product reviews at www.diaperpin.com or www.thediaperhyena.com.
If you are just starting I recommend that you try a variety of styles until you find the ones that you prefer.
As for local resources, I know that Green Living in Dallas sells some diapers and covers. There is also Peppermint Baby Boutique in Richardson and Baby Bottoms & More in Farmers Branch. I believe these last two have a greater variety.
I usually go online to buy. I purchased from greenmountain.com and cottonbabies.com. Ebay used to be a really great place to buy. www.diaperswappers.com is an awesome site. In addition to finding diapers, there are several very active boards that are a wealth of information.

I think we're going to use them with #2, and we're going to try Sunbaby http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38.l1313&amp... They can be used from newborn to potty training, so you don't have to purchase any as they grow. They are cute and brightly colored too. I think we're going to do the ones with the inserts because they seem, to us, like they may be best to use. Good luck with it!

I am mainly using fuzzibunz which I got from fuzzibunzstore.com. They have a package that includes everthing you need to cloth diaper. I also have a few bum genius which are good too.

I also used fuzzi bunz and loved them. Lots of people use the prefold with a cover and swear by them but personally I never got the hang of them and they were more of a hassle for me than anything. I also used cloth wipes. They are quite expensive if you purchase them from a vendor and I made my own. I bought a yard of super soft flannel from the fabric store and cut them with pinking shears into 8x8 squares. After a couple of washes they were so soft. I just put them in the same dry pail as the diapers and washed them all together, no problem. I kept a small spray bottle on the changing table to wet them when needed so that eliminated both the cold wipes and he chemicals in them.
I will say this, I had to try several several types before I found what worked for us. Sort of like finding jeans...once you find the perfect fit they are awesome. If you visit bree's bumms or babies bottoms and more in plano they will put together a sample pack for you to try and you can return the ones you don't like and they will credit you towards the ones you do purchase. I have used Fuzzi Bunz and they were okay. But now I'm using Bum Genius 3.0 and they're great! You may want to try a different variety to see what works best for you since everybody is different. I have purchased my cloth diapers from ebay and diaperswappers.com. Diaperswappers.com is an awesome site...highly addicting, though. I have also purchased a diaper sprayer to remove the poop off of the diapers but I didn't really start using it until my daughter started eating solids. It's kinda difficult to remove the yellow runny poop from newborns that aren't eating solids. Oh, for the laundry detergent for the cloth diapers, I am using Charlie's Soap...it's supposedly the best for cloth diapers. I've never seen it in markets so I usually purchase mine from a seller on ebay. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I'm with Jan O with the flat fold diapers. You can fold the diapers to fit the baby and you can clean them easier than the new ones. Besides back in "those" days they had a separate diaper liner you could use for the poop diapers that was flushable. When my daughter was new born I used the prefolds because I could get them smaller enough to fit her bottom. I came across a couple diapers the other day and they are 35 years old. Just use the hottest water possible for washing after prerinsing and another rinse at the end to make sure all of the soap is out. Good luck to you whatever method you decide upon. The other S.

I was going to tell you what I used when my kids were little. I googled cloth diapers and WOW, diapers have changed. My opinion is: I had pre-folded and flat diapers that I folded to fit. I liked the flat the best. They took less time to dry (in the dryer and on the line), and they lasted longer. I used the pre-folded ones for convenience, they took less room in a diaper bag, but over all consider the dry time. I also never used a diaper laundry detergent. Ivory and Dreft both gave my girls diaper rash. I used a detergent that was "free" of all additive. Tide used to have one. minimal bleach and fabric softener. I also had a long (12" or more) thing that looked like a clothes pin. I would clip it on a the dirty diaper and then switch it in toilet to remove excess poop. I know I did this 30 years ago, but all worked then.

I use Knicker Nappies, but I don't love them. They leak through (even with a Super Doo insert). But I bought 14 cloth diapers/inserts and that is plenty! It can usually get me through a day and a half or two days if I do the laundry every day (and it gets too stinky if I don't).

But there are soooo many sites out there, so look around as much as possible for the best price/shipping. Ebay is also an option because the diapers are just as good used as they are new.

A good how to site is http://diaperpin.com/howto.asp I couldn't get the pee smell out of my son's and their method is great! Basically what I do is add about 1/4 a cup of vinegar to a cold pre-rinse cycle. Then I use Tide detergent (doesn't cause buildup like the all-natural ones) with 1/4 a cup of baking soda on the "Whitest Whites" setting (it includes a 2nd rinse and does the hottest and longest wash). Then I dry them on medium heat for 60 minutes. It's worked perfectly!

we like wool covers over either unbleached indian prefolds or bamboo/hemp bella bottoms fitted diapers for around the house; for going out or times when we need to actually fit pants over their bottoms, i love bum genius. we got a lot of ours from ebay and from abby's lane...sign up for the yahoo group/email list for discounts.
& fwiw, country save and planet have been our favorites when it comes to detergents...

Bum Genius 3.0 one size diapers are the way to go :) If you buy 15-18 of them that will lasy you from newborn until potty training! No need to buy different sizes or inserts, these come with everything you need. They are so easy to use! I purchased mine from cottonbabies.com, my wet bags and cloth wipes from there as well, and my detergent from charliessoap.com. Definitely go with the cloth wipes as well, if not you will be searching for a place to put dirty disposable ones when you are changing a diaper. If you have the funds for them, I recommend Fuzzi Bunz. I'd get 18 smalls and at least 24 inserts. CottonBabies.com, Fuzzibunzstore.com, and kellyscloset.com are all places we've used. I also like nurturedfamily.com but they're in-state and I tried to use out-of-state vendors so I wouldn't have to pay tax on them. I have two friends who use fuzzibunzseconds.net and they say they can't tell the difference between first quality and the seconds quality...

Special instructions: When washing use VERY hot water, make sure your rinse water is clear and use a good detergent! I recommend Charlie's Soap. We had horrible problems with diaper rash for a while because the residue from our Tide was left in our washer and didn't rinse out of our diapers.

we just started using bum genius one size about a couple of months ago. After getting used to them, I really enjoy them. I know there is a great store in Richardson at campbell and plano rd. The name is Peppermint baby or something like that. Also cotton babies online has a lot of great information and selection. One more trick I have found is there is a blog called cloth diapers are always on sale. They send out messages and coupon codes for any sights that are having a sale on cloth diapers.
