That Cakes for Me place on Roosevelt is about a block east of the 90/94 on ramp on the north side of the street. Never been inside but I live in the neighborhood. If you have a little money to spend I particularly like Bittersweet on Belmont in Lakeview, or Dinkel's Bakery (a bit cheaper) on Lincoln (also in Lakeview).

I would say Deerfields bakery in Deerfield. It is a drive but it is worth it. THey have a website. Also, THree Tarts bakery in Northfield. Both are on the pricey side but worth every penny. Deerfields also makes smash cakes.

I had a beautiful cake made for my sister-in-law's baby shower from Alliance Bakery and Cafe
1736 W. Division St., Chicago

They made it exactly like I wanted, 3 square tiers decortated like presents and I even had one tier to match the pattern of her baby bumper. It was awesome and tasted even better. They'll accomodate you in every way. Check out their website, they have lots of great pictures.
Good luck, hope your girls have a wonderful 1st birthday.

Hi there...
I have ordered here for several of my daughter's b-days and for buisness as well. Their cakes are sooooo good, they use fresh fruits and the cakes are super moist and fresh! Enjoy!

I love Deerfield's bakery! There's one in Deerfield and Buffalo Grove. I think they might have even one more location. I've used them every year for either cakes or cookie treats! Yum-O!

E.,
Rolf's Bakery on Touhy (E of Edens/94?) might not be too far for you.
A lot of pros order cakes from them, Whole Foods sells their stuff.
We've had them make cakes for us, including an Ariel cake. We just
give them the image we want and they design from it. I hear they used to make cakes for Pres. Clinton events w/seal of US, so the design side is good and everyone raves about the flavor. They are very nice and may give you a phone estimate.
RE party ideas: My opinion is that the one year guests of honor don't know how to say birthday, much less know what's going on. Our one year old parties have been for us, and we invite family and our friends, parents and kids from any tight nit play group. Why not have cute party stuff and cake and don't worry much about a theme. Just celebrate with people you are close to: WE SURVIVED THE FIRST YEAR!
Have fun!

Go to Gladstone Bakery on Milwaukee near Bryn Mawr in Chicago. From O'hare you can exit the I-90 and trun left to go east on Foster, then turn left onto Milwaukee.
They make the coolest shaped cakes that are truly delicious!!! You choose the kind of cake, frosting, and filling(s). For my son's 1st birthday, it was a "royal" theme since we had a "Birthday King" crown and cape. They made a cake in the shape of a dragon. For his first bite, he ate the head! All I had to do was bring in a picture of the image I wanted turned into a cake. People still talk to us about it! There are several cakes like this on display in the bakery plus they have a huge photo album full. Have fun! Happy Birthday girls!!

If you're looking for a cake as a work of art, there's a place called royale icing (royaleicing.com) on Chicago Ave. in Oak Park that makes those super-fancy occasion cakes. I'm sure they're expensive. Take a look at the website for pictures - pretty amazing stuff (although I don't think I'd want to actually cut into one). Have never tasted them.
We always get our birthday party cakes from the Oak Park Bakery (Oak Park Ave. near the Eisenhower) They look very nice, and taste fabulous. I can also second Dinkels.
I just saw your PS - I guess neither of these is that close to you, but I'll go ahead and post in case it's useful.
