I bled for the first month and then didn't bleed at all after that. Now that I'm off it though, I swear this first period is like a make-up period for all the ones that I missed!

Just personal opinion...I HATED the depo shot...I spotted, I gained weight...ugh. I would definitely not take another form of birth control...for me, the depo shot messed up my body enough...I felt like it took a few months after I passed on that next dose before my body felt remotely 'normal' again. If you're really concerned...I would talk to your OB or midwife.

1. You will never stop spotting on Depo.
2. It will take a LONG time for your cycle to get back to normal even if you don't take it again.
3. Depo is a truly horrid form of birth control that makes you bloat, gain weight and become hormonally insane - you might as well just get pregnant!
4. I don't know WHY they still give it to women!
Sorry to be negative but this has been my personal experience with Depo. In fact after taking it I have never taken hormones again. I hated it so much I chose abstinence or condoms and once I was married and had kids I now use copper IUD.

I was on the Depo shot for about a year and I had to get off because it truly turned me into a raging lunatic and I couldn't stand the constant spotting and two periods a month (not every month, but it happened a few times). The spotting never stopped for me. I kept waiting for my body to adjust and it never did. I hated that shot!

About 15 years ago, I took one dosage of the depo shot, and that was it for me, for 3 months I spotted, it was HORRIBLE. I never went back to get my second dosage, which some of my friends said it would stop, I just didn't want take that chance. I went back to the pill. Now, I'm 38 and my tubes are tied.

I sure wouldn't take another birth control while being on it. You don't want to mess up your body. I think you should call your doctor and find out what they think you should do.

well i really like the depo. since i first got it, the only time i spot or get period is when i get the shot or when i am sexually active. which is not very often. i always bombard my gyn with questions when i get confused. good luck

I was on depo for about 8-9 years, and I LOVED it! I didn't have a period for almost the whole time. There was some spotting here and there, but it was so light. I didn't gain weight and had no side effects that I can think of. I went off the shot to get pregnant, and after four months of being off the shot, my period returned, and it was crazy heavy, but the periods got normal and regular after about six to nine months. I'm back on the shot again now for almost six months after giving birth, and the first three months were bad - spotting/medium bleeding for almost the whole three months, but after the second shot, I've had only one period in three months. I'm going in for my third shot in two weeks, and I hope for no more periods at all. Every woman's body is different, so you should do what you feel is best for you and what you can live with. If I were you, I would go for the second shot, and if you are still having trouble with it after that, you should find another method that you can live with.

Agree with Havingfungoingcrazy completely. My face got dark splotches and I had horrible headaches and bled off/on the entire time I was on it (few months). I do not think you should double up on it but I would check with your OB first.

Good luck!

You won't stop spotting while on it. It's a pain, but that's how it is. I was on it for 9 months total 10 years ago. I was crampy ALL the time, moody, sex was horribly painful, I gained 40 pounds in 2 months, and I spotted the entire time. Once I stopped getting the shot, it took me 1 WHOLE year to get my period back. The only reason I even did get it back was because I went on the pill to start it up and once it kicked back in, I stopped all birth control and just went with the counting method. Both our kids were planned, but I had a perfect 28 day cycle, so the counting method worked for me. Good luck, and if I were you, I would not get the shot again

You don't need another form of bc while on depo. It can take your body awhile to get used to the hormones. It took almost a year of being on depo before I had no period or spotting. I was on depo for 11 years with no periods after that 1st year.
