When to Take Holiday Portraits?

This may be a stupid question, but how soon do I need to get my kids' pictures taken professionally to get them in time to send out with Christmas cards? I haven't done this in a long time and don't know the turnaround time. I know back in the day it took 6-8 weeks. Is it still like that? I haven't picked a place yet, but I'm sure I will choose a place that I have a coupon for...Target, Sears, Penneys... And I will probably stay away from "kiddie" portrait places because of my 13-year old. I want one nice picture with him and my 7 month old.

hello, i always go to wal-mart. they always have the cheap packages for like 4.99 and then you can buy more when you see the other poses that you want. and they don't have a sitting fee... you can put the whole family in the pic for nothing extra same with target! i know JC penny has a 9.99 sitting fee for each extra person you put in the photo. and the wal-mart is about 3 weeks

Hi T.,

If my memory serves my correctly, most studios request families to take portraits sometime at the end of October or the beginning of Novemeber.

Last year at JC Penney it was about a 2 week turn around. I did my son's birthday portraits a week before his birthday on the 8th and they were ready on the 22nd of Dec.

Hi there! I am an onlocation photographer and I take just a little over a week to get your edited pictures to you. They come on a CD to where you can print them as you like. I can also print or do christmas cards for you and have them shipped directly to you 24 hours after placing the order. My website is www.chunkymonkeyphotography.com if you want to take a look. I would love to meet your family and get a great picture for your family christmas cards!

If you are planning on sending the cards out the first of December then you probably want to take your pictures no later than the first week in Nov. I would probably take them the last week of Oct. just in case it takes a little longer to get them in.

A lot of places now print your pictures for you on the spot. Kiddie Kandids is my favorite and they give you your pictures immediately. If you are going to order the cards at the photo place, then I would allow 4-8 weeks.

by the way.... I recommend that you do NOT use Sears. I have had very bad experiences there on three different occasions. I will spare you all the details, but I would not use them.

It all depends on where you want to go. Last year I had my kids pics taken at kiddie kandids and you get them back the very same day and they take great pics. Just call around and ask.

It really depends on where you take them. I took my son to Studio 121 at Grapevine Mills and it took 3 weeks. The following year I took him to Kiddie Kandids and got my pics the same day.

I had my DD Christmas pics taken right before Thanksgiving. They came back just in time to mail two weeks before Christmas. Last year we had them done at Kiddie Kandids and they print out the pics right there within half an hour. So you can get it done when ever you want if you go there.

If you take your own snapshot into Costco, you can have them put onto cards, with a personalized message. It costs about $16 for 5o and take 1 hour...or you can upload to the Costco website; they will mail them to you for free and takes only about a week to recieve them.

I don't know where you live but I always use portrait innovations in Arlington. They do awesome work and are really cheap and you get your pictures back the same day. I got a 10x13, 2 8x10's, 4 5x7s and I don't even remember how many wallets (but it was a bunch)for 9.99, plus the packages they offer aren't that bad either. They also took like 60 shots of the kids.

Hi T., I have been taking my kids to Portrait Innovations for the past 3 yrs and they are great! You get to view your proofs right after the photo shoot, you get to take a change of clothes, no sitting fees, and you pick your favorites that day and they have them printed for you within 30 minutes in their in house photo lab! The quality is great and you get a lot more photos for your money and even the option of getting all the photos on CD to do whatever you want with them....so it's great! www.portraitinnovations.com
