I was told 6 months and never anything in the bottle. Always by spoon, no matter how thin.

If you are having issues, consult a certified lactation consultant or la leache league leader for support on breastfeeding.

Six months is the recommended time frame- better to concentrate on resloving your nursing issues now and wait on introducing anything else.

If you are having difficulties - you need to get help from experienced Mommas in your area (Le Leche League) or from a professional - preferably an IBCLC. Once you get things going good - it's a very easy and rewarding relationship to keep up.

Solids and other liquids should be held until about 7-8 months because until then, the GI tract is open and immature and introducing foreign foods will also introduce foreign bacteria which at best and irritate and inflame the immature gut or at worst make them gassy, sick, constipated or diarrhea.

Wha kind of problems are you having with breastfeeding? A little more information would be helpful.

I personally would wait ATLEAST the bare minimum of 2 more months until you introduce cereal and baby food, until he is 6 months- maybe even 7 or 8 months. I know as Moms we get so excited about feeding solids, but it is really best to wait. He is getting everything he needs nutritionally from your breastmilk right now.

As for liquids, you can do watered down juice or plain water during the same time frame.

I think that 6 months is the time that they recommend now. Talk to your pediatrician about his nutrition if you think he's not getting enough to eat.

I started both of my kids on solids at 3mos.
They were both formula fed, for what it's worth, and just hungry little buggers.

If you start solids, start with rice cereal. Once he gets the hang of that, you can start introducing vegetables and then fruits. Usually give it a week between introducing something new to make sure there is no allergy.

With my 1st & 2nd I started around 4 months but they were mainly formula fed. Now with my 3rd, exclusively breastfeeding, I was told to wait until 6 months. I waited until almost 7 months. I recommend talking to a lactation consultant before starting the solids. If you really want to stick to the breastfeeding I would hold out on the solid foods until no more feeding problems. good luck

Talk to your pediatrician. Ours recommened a tablespoon of rice cereal to start at 4 1/2 months. Our son hated it. We just kept trying a little bit each day. The baby needs breastmilk or formula as its main source of food and nutrician - do not replace a "milk" feeding with solids.
