When to Start Birth Control Pills

Hi Moms - I have a 7 month old daughter that I nursed until 5 months. I have only gotten my period twice. I would really like to start taking the pill, but I don't know when to start. Do I need to wait until I get my period again or can I just start it Sunday (I have always been a sunday start). At the rate I am going it could be months before I have another period.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I asked my pharmacist and he didn't know what I should do. Thanks so much ladies!!

What can I do next?

obviously....your doctor prescribed your birth control pills for you. I would certainly call into the office for an idea of when. They should be able to tell you more accurately after your next period or Sunday or ......I would certainly want to be sure as to not mess up my period and have the panic and anxiety of possibly being pregnant while taking it or becoming pregnant if started incorrectly. And it could be that the doctor thought he/she already clued you in to when but in fact hadn't.It's only a phone call away and doesn't require an office visit. Good luck and remember...the reason we have them kinds of doctors is for answering any questions as they come up. J.

You can still get pregnant even if your periods are not regular. Call your OB/GYN & get on the pill ASAP. But you should also make sure you're not already pregnant (maybe that's why you don't have your period).

Hi M. F!

You do not have 2 wait 2 get a period before you start taking the pill again. I used 2 wrk in OB and those who formula feed start the pill @ their 6wk check up before their period comes back. I also know of some nursing mamas that do the mini-pill way before their periods come back! Good luck and just call your doc and speak with a nurse if u have any doubts.

You can start the mini pill anytime but beware I know a few moms in my moms group, myself included that were nursing & on this and got pregnant anyway. Talk to your doctor and see what they suggest. I only had one funky period while nursing & that was all it took for me to get pregnant again. Needless to say, it was a shock so my youngest 2 are 17 months apart.

good luck

Call your OB. Ask to talk to her nurse, and tell her that you've finished nursing and want to go on the pill. Chances are she'll put you on whatever you were on before you were pregnant.

You can still get pregnant without regular periods, so unless you feel like taking the chance, call TODAY. Have your pharmacy phone number available, the nurse can just call it in so you can pick it up today. You can usually start any day of the week, but ask the nurse about that too.

Good luck!

Ask your ob/gyn.

Every woman's reproductive health is different, so there may be a reason why your doctor would want you to wait. Only one way to find out - call!

Hi - Make an appt with your OB/GYN - or potentially - just call. That is all I had to do - I just told them - I am done nursing & want to start the pill. They called in the prescription that I asked for! Be careful though - it is very easy to get pregnant right after you are done breastfeeding...

Ask your OB or the nurse at your OB's office. Three months after I had my first baby, I had not yet started my period again, and I was breastfeeding when I found out I was pregnant with #2! So, take some other precaution, unless you want to be on the pregnancy boat in the near future!
