I have read in books and magazines that you should take the paci away around 6 months so they won't get dependent on it. I have a 4 month old daughter and I think I am strong enough to take her paci away now. But I want everyone elses opinion on this.

What can I do next?

I would say to do it whenever YOU think...
My ped said with both my girls that it was fine and they both had it until they were 3. Before I had kids I would have thought that was outrageous to let a 2 yr old have a paci, but they only used it at night, gave it up willingly when they moved into their "big girl bed" and there have been no permanent effects that I can tell :) And yes, their teeth are perfect.
In fact, neither one of them were thumb suckers - a much harder habit to break.

Hi H.,
My name is L. and I currently live in North Houston as well with my 8 month old son; close to the Woodlands. I have a couple of family and church members here, but they all work. I started substitute teaching but I recently stopped because my son got sick. So my husband and I decided that it is best that I stay home for now. I am in a teacher certification program right now and only have two weeks left. I am trying to take my son off of his pacifier too. He is not really a pacifier baby. But he is very reliant on it to put himself to sleep, mostly during the night. I waited to long to stop so now even trying to break at night time is even difficult. I tried last week, but he is teething now and it didn't work because it helps to sooth his pain during the night. From my experience I would definitely start at six months trying to take her off of it.

I never gave my girl a pacifier, unless i had already given her a bottle and changed her and all that jazz and she would not give up the ghost to sleep, it helped to soothe her to sleep. I think it is best to never start, just act like you don't have it and don't give it to the kiddo. I gave her one a few weeks ago, keep in mind she is 20 months now, and she looked at the thing with a confused look and had no idea what it was. I was cleaning out the diaper bag.

Girl I let my daughter suck her artho paci till she was 20 months when whe counted 7 of them and made a pack that when there gone thats it. I did'nt push the issue because babies are suppose to get so much sucking in by 2 yrs of age and my pedi said that from what he has seen thru the yrs the babies sucking the artho paci actually have straight teeth. My daughter is 19 now and never had braces and has a million dollar smile. I didn't take it till she knew what I was talking about. Of course this is just me. There is no perfect way of doing things God knows who to give what kid to who.
