When Is It Time to Get Rid of Sippy Cups?

We still give my 2.5 year old daughter insulated sippy cups with milk to carry around during the day. I'm thinking it's time to just give her milk with meals vs. all day. Just wondered what the mommies here are doing and recommend!

P.S. We do lots of park trips, library time and long walks.

Thanks

I would switch to water to carry around at age 2 and only for meals milk or juice. I did like find milk in cups in the toy room or in a cabinet somewhere. Good Luck!

I never gave any of my kids milk to "carry around" in a cup during the day. They only had it in the am, before nap time and before bed time. My 2.5 yo drinks out of a regular cup at meal time and has for the past year. I only give my kids water at meal time so if they spill, they can wipe it up by themselves. If they want a drink in the middle of the day they get water in a regular cup. All of my kids were drinking out of a regular cup by 2 years old.
IMO you need to get rid of the sippy cup now! She will adapt to the change and you will be teaching her not to rely on milk to fill her tummy. I do not recommend juice during the day either. Just give her water. She will learn to like it if she doesn't already and it's much more healthy and convenient. Save juices for treats! I don't give milk at meal time because if I do my kids would A) spill it and B) use it to fill themselves instead of eating the meal.
This is just how I do things, which is what you asked right! I'm sure you will find something that works for you and your family.

Get rid of tippy cups when you don't mind cleaning spills on the carpet or floors. We still use them for our 6 year olds and her friends when she has company.

My almost two year old just got really good at drinking out of a regular cup in the last month. He still gets a sippy cup for water if we're in the car or somewhere else where it wouldn't be good for him to spill liquid all over. Other than that he drinks milk at the table during meals.

My son is one year old and he hates all sippy cup. He will only drink out of a regular cup and he only drinks water. He doesn't know how to hold the cup yet so I have to feed him liquid all the time. I guess in my case, I wish he wanted to use the sippy cup.

I think maybe at home you can offer them the cup and when you are out and about you can put the milk in a regular water bottle (the commercial store bought ones with water in them i.e. aquafina, arrowhead etc..) Maybe you can empty the water and put milk in it? But I agree with you that I think milk should be offer during mealtime and not throughout the day since it is hard to keep milk fresh being carried all day around anyways.

I try not to give my son milk that often bc its not really meant to hydrate them just to nourish them. However, I believe that a sippy cup should be used anytime hes not at his table with a drink bc 2 yos can spill a drink so easily. I also tend to use one almost anytime hes at someone elses house even though its just water

I found with my daughter if I give her milk with meals, she doesn't eat the meal and just drinks the milk. So I give her milk in the morning and 1 hour later I give her breakfast, and then she gets milk before bed. My pediatrician only wants her having at most 15 oz of milk a day at 18 months. My daughter doesn't like juice and only drinks water. She has a sippy cup of water she takes with her all day long. We are starting to introduce a regular cup, although she still spills everywhere so I don't see us getting rid of the sippy cup anytime soon. However, I hope by 2 to have her off the sippy cup.

My son is just about that age. At meals he gets whatever he drinks in a cup, but throughout the day, if he asks for something, I still give it to him. He usually picks the cup. Sometimes it is a cup, sometimes a to-go cup (hard spout sippy with no valve - especially if we are in the car), or his coffee cup (insulated without a valve, and just a hole to drink from). He usually doesn't have a sippy to carry around throughout the day, just when he asks for a drink.

You may try to transition to only drinks when she asks, and then if you want to get rid of the sippy, give the drinks in cups.

When they can handle liquids and not spill them all over the place.
By that standard my 45 yr old sister still needs a sippy cup. She's a natural spiller. She can't be within 5 feet of any liquid or it will somehow be spilt. She seriously needs to invest in a paper towel company. Water and a sports bottle will work well.

At 2 I started giving my kids the cups with straws and they were (and still) are only allowed to drink in the kitchen and dining room.

At this age, they don't need to drink continously throughout the day. I stopped sippy cups at about this age with my DS. Just made a big deal about what a big boy he was now and he didn't need them. Taught him to always leave his cup on the counter and never walk around with it. Also, cleaned up a few spills initially but he learned pretty quickly and even tried to help clean the spills. He thinks he is such a big boy now and so proud that he doesn't use a sippy anymore!

NOW!!! It's a perfect time to transition her.....& there is absolutely no need for her to have milk all day. Time to switch to water.....especially for dental health!

& there is data proving a direct coorelation between learning to drink from a cup like a big girl & improved speech/dental development. Good Luck!

Now and it will make potty training much easier if she isn't constantly drinking. My youngest started playgroup at 18 months and they give dixie cups to toddlers that were even younger then him.

Definitely just give milk at meals at this age. It's really not good for their teeth to have milk all day long like that. Just put water in the sippy cup and serve milk in a regular cup at mealtime.

My 2.5 year old daughter is only allowed food and drink in the kitchen, so the "carrying around" really isn't an issue for us. She gets milk in a sippy/straw cup because of the spill risk. She gets water in any cup she wants - sippy or a sigg waterbottle or an open cup. We only take water out of the house, not milk but will get milk at a restaurant sometimes. I have given her open cups since she was an infant, and I occasionally let her have milk in one with a meal sitting at the table, but she still spillls frequently so she isn't ready to totally give up a covered cup. I think my older daughter was solidly on open cups by 3.5. There is no reason to limit her milk intake as long as she is eating food and not filling up on liquids and not gaining too much weight. My daughter drinks 1% and we will transition to skim in the next couple of months. And I also think it is a good idea to encourage her to be a water drinker if she isn't yet.
