When Do I Need to Make the First Visit upon Finding Out I'm Pregnant?

How soon do I need to go to my first Doc appt? My sister-in-law tells me I don't need to go until I'm about 3 months because they'll just have me take another test to verify I'm pregnant.

What can I do next?

My doctor had me go in at 8 weeks with both my girls. I know that seems like an eternity but hang in there. Congradulations, I love being a mom. It's the most amazing thing in the world. Good luck ;)

I would call the clinic you plan to go to and ask them out right when they want the first apt. my clinic told me 12-18 weeks.

I went in for my first appointment on Dec 28th and I was 9 weeks. I was told that from the moment you find out your pregnant you should be on the phone with the clinic and set up all your first appointments. One with a nurse so she can get family history and so on and then one later with your dr.
But so you know now start taking pre-natal (spelling) or womens one-a-day. I was told they are the same thing. You need the folic acid. Anyway, Congratulations!!!! Its an exciting and morning sickness filled time!

Hi M.,

Like the others said it depends. Although your first Physical appt may not be until 2-3 months, alot of practices may have you come in before to fill in a health assessment and also give you good info about nutrition, etc. Sometimes they make you take a class (even if it is your second child). Also a good point to make is that the appointments fill up quickly so it is best to call early.

It is probably best to call your OB office and they will let you know the best course to take. I think my first appointment was at 8 weeks, but it may differ by clinic. Congrats on being pregnant and good luck!

If you have insurance I'd go asap just to verify things, make sure everything seems normal and to start out on a good foot.

How exciting....if you can, go right away, that way you'll know for sure and can start vitamins (folic acid) and get on the right foot! Congratulations! What a blessing:)

Congrats!! What an exciting time!!

I agree with others when it depends on the clinic. Each is different. Most say 12 weeks, but it all depends on the clinic. If you being to have some problems (pain, spotting, etc) - go in right away! Once again Congrats!!!

I think each clinic varies. With my first, they had me come in at 8 weeks. With my second (same doc, different practice), they were annoyed that I called at 6 weeks to schedule my 8 week visit because they do it at 6 weeks! :)

So, just call, they'll let you know when you need to come in. Seeing as though this is your first, they'll typically do an 'educational' visit first, then you'll have your first real OB appt at around 8-10 weeks.

Congrats!

With my first pregnancy they didn't want to see me until 12 weeks but I miscarried before that time. With my second and third pregnancies they did an ultrasound at 6 and 9 weeks just to confirm that the baby was alive.

I went at 10 weeks so they could date the pregnancy as there was some question as to how far along I was. Turns out my guess was pretty accurate. Anyway - I got an extra ultrasound out of it!

My OB's office typically schedules first appointments at 12 weeks though. I second the advice to doublecheck your insurance to see what your coverage is.

Congratulations! :)

Three months is way too late! You and your baby need good care from early on. I'd recommend that you call your doctor when you're about 7 weeks along and make a first appointment when you're 10 weeks.

The doctor got mad at me for waiting till I was 12 weeks to even call and make the appt. Your supposed to have an app. with in the first three months. I suggest call the ob and talk to the receptionist and they will help you on when you need to come in.

I will pass along a little info I got early in my first pregnancy...you are more than 2.5 weeks along...you start counting weeks from the end of your last period so when you first could possibly find out you are pregnant you are already at least 4 weeks!

I personaly think that is best to go when you first suspect that you are pregnant.Yes they will do a urine and blood pregnancy test. They can determine how far along and also check your hormon levels to make sure that things are ok.My first visit with my youngest i was 4 weeks. The sooner you go the better I think. Also taking prenatal vitamins early is good to.Most women I know usually see the doctor for the first time when they are about 6 weeks along. Good luck and congradulations to both of you.

Your sister-in-law is correct about taking another test, however, I'm not so sure you should wait until you are 3 months along, since the 1st trimester is so critical. You should call your family doc office and see what they say. They may have you wait until you are a little further along but at the first visit, they make sure you are all set for insurance purposes and your wishes as far as pain medications and your health at this point. Visits are more informational than physical at this point, at least for me they were. Just check with your doc and follow his instructions, but I don't think you should wait so long...it just may not be safe. Good Luck!

If you have insurance, go now. It can't hurt. Plus, they will do some basic blood tests and possibly perform a pap to make sure that everything is going o.k. so far. And, they will give you some helpful information on the development of the baby that you can track and follow througout your pregnancy, or perhaps perscribe some better than over the counter prenatal vitamins, or be able to tell you when you're due. Not that you can't figure that out on your own.

Also, the number of weeks along you start your dates from the beginning of your last period. Even though you probably know you only concieved 2 1/2 weeks ago, if you have missed your period,...you are technically about 4-6 weeks along. You should get in to a Doc at least at 10 weeks along. That is a good starting point for appointments if you don't have insurance and are looking to cut down appointment costs. And, the doctor will tell you whcih appointments are the critical ones.

When I took the Home pregnancy test with my first and second child the day that it was positive I called and set up an appointment and was not told that I needed to wait till a certain time for an appointment. We wanted to make sure right away. Pregnancy tests are not always right and even having a negative test means nothing. My sister took 4-5 home tests all said she was not pregnant and went to the dr and she was. I would make one to confirm that you are. Who cares if the first appointment is only to test if you are. At least you will know and have time to adjust and find out when your due. Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy.

Like some other people said, I would call your O.B. and go down as soon as possible. I'd rather be sure that everything was o.k. and that your pregnancy is healthy as possible.

Hello- I think it really depends on the clinic you choose to go to. I called my clinic around 5 weeks and they scheduled the first appointment for 9 weeks. At that time they do a full exam, listen for the heart beat etc. I didn't go to the doctor to get my pregnancy confirmed, but if you choose to at around 5 weeks I believe they will only do that test at that time.

I think the first thing to do is to call the clinic/OB and the will tell you when you should come in.

Most OBs recommend going between week 8 and 10 I think. I had my first visit in week 10 and by then they can sometimes hear the heartbeat - which is so exciting the first time you hear it! Don't wait until the 3rd month - the first few are important to get advice and care from your doc or midwife.
Congrats!

Contact your clinic. They will want to know how you know your pregnant ie: home test etc. They will ask you a bunch of questions over the phone like date of last period etc and then tell you when you should come in which may be later than you think. If for some reason you are high risk (due to age or previous miscarrages, it will be sooner). But, they kind of tell you when you come in...it may be at 5 weeks or later! For now also check what your insurance covers....most cover all prenatal checks! congrats!

As soon as possible alot of doctors will take another pregnacy test no matter what so it can be in your file.Unless your showing but by then you would of missed alot of important visits like sugar test, blood test etc.. I know this because I'm going through this with my oldest daughter because she waited so long to get to a doctor (not by her choice)Medicade issues.
