When Did Your Son Start Standing to Pee?

My 3-year-old son is potty trained, but we haven't yet started working on standing to pee. We don't use a potty chair, and he's even stopped wanting to use a potty seat--just wants to use the regular toilet seat--and he's doing a great job! I think he's still a bit short to be able to stand up to pee successfully at the toilet, so maybe it's more about height than age? I'll leave the instruction to my husband on this one, but I just wondered when most people start teaching their boys to pee standing up.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice! I hadn't realized how messy this transition would be, so I think I'll just wait until he seems interested and we'll take it from there. Right now, I'm happy for things to stay clean(er) as long as possible!

not really a height thing either, and no need to leave it to daddy. ;) My son started standing soon after he was potty trained, so he was still 2. He kept peeing out from under the toilet lid, so there was no choice. Get a small stool, and have them stand on that. Give him a cheerio to aim for, or other small ceraels, etc. When out in public, my son would stand on the tops of my feet so he was taller. No biggie really. Just drop the cheerio in there, stand him in front of the toilet, and tell him to pee on it. ;)

My son is now 5 1/2. Somewhere in the potty training process we came up with the idea of sitting backwards on the toilet seat to pee. Neither of us were big fans of a potty, and he used a potty seat on the toilet for a while. But when it came to the point where he wanted to try and pee like his dad he was still a little short (and didn't have great aim) and so sitting backwards seemed to be the best solution! He soon after transferred to standing on a step stool and then finally on the floor.
Hope that helps!

We potty trained our son at 2.5yrs. As soon as he got the hang of going when he needed, we (I mostly - husband works nights, so he sleeps during the day) started him standing. (which was funny to watch a mom try to teach a son to stand :P) He had more fun that way. We bought him a cheap step, u find in the kids department b/c he was too short. I think it all depends if he wants to or not. They are messier when they stand, or at least mine is. Good Luck with your little one.
i.e. We have no problem with the seat being down or up. We have taught him to put the seat down when he is done.

Both my boys were around 4 yo. We had to put a step stool infront of the toilet. I also recommend getting a potty pad for around the toilet, it makes clean up easier:) Good luck.

Hi- Our son transitioned into standing up naturally and spontaneously during the summer- right on time for you. We were walking thru the woods at a state park and he had to pee, so Dad took him behind the trees and they took a leak together like 'big boys'. At first it took a bit of coaxing, then the "need' sorta took over. Then we were on a long drive in a rural area with no rest stop to be found and he and Dad did it on the side of the road. It cught on after that - to be like Dad. The standing up part is best to be taught by Dad anyway, its not like us Mom's can effectively demonstrate that whole aiming and then shaking off thing! LOL! So I guess my advice is to get him in the 'pee' mode when a bathroom is not available and let Dad and nature take over.
When it does and it will, you will be cleaning your toilet and the floor SO MUCH more! And for you, always remember and never forget- LOOK BEFORE YOU SIT!

K.,
My son has been potty trained since he was two and has been wanting to only sit on the big potty not the potty seat, but funny enough he just started standing up to pee. It took him getting tall enough to reach and coordinating holding, standing and making sure not to dribble. I would not force it, but just show him that he can stand if he wants to. It is definately height not age.

Good Luck,
F.

My son was potty trained right around age 3 but has never wanted to stand to pee. He's almost 7 now and still sits on the toilet. He has stood to pee outside occasionally and manages that well enough, but I don't know how his aim is! I figured that going to elementary school and seeing the other boys stand would make him want to also, but not so much. I'm content as long as he is.

I have 3 boys, and I'd suggest NOT teaching the standing up method! You'll have a lot less mess to clean up and the seat will always be down! :-)

Hi K., well my son (who is now 4 and a half) started doing it by him self when he was 3 and a half my husband just told him how to do it but after that he refused doing it, so we decided not to push him anymore(we just reminded him when he wanted to use the toilet how boys do pee) and a few months later he was doing it on his own, so my advice to you be patient and wait he will learn, if he want to do it standing now, just help him hit the target right, soon he'll be a pro. Good luck!!!

My son was around your son's age, the bottom of his potty doubled as a stool so he would stand on it to pee randomly sometimes standing up and sometimes he would just sit down. When he got a little taller he ditched the stool on his own and started exclusively standing. Don't worry he'll get the hang of it(no pun intended).

We started with my son when he noticed my husband did it that way and wanted to be like dad. Let your son decide.

Okay, you'll probably get a good laugh... but I let my 3 boys stand on my toes to reach. Two of my sons were potty trained before they were two. I found it quite fast and easy really, as there isn't much "flow" at these ages (my 3 and 1/2 yr old still does okay without "aiming" every time) See if your son can stand and reach on his tippy toes, just help him balance.

Honestly, this was just so much easier for us because we traveled a lot, and I didn't have to plunk my kids down on a foreign potty. Good luck, let me know if you try it!

My son is 3 1/2 and decided last week that he wanted to pee standing up. He's too short for it and it makes a gross, stinky mess. Ugh. I am not happy with this development! we didn't try to teach him or even suggest it. In fact, we're actively discouraging it.

My 25 year old son still sits to pee, and it makes cleaning up the bathroom easier. He somehow figured out how to use urinals, so I would not sweat it. If he never stands up to pee, it will not cause him to be unsuccesful in life (tongue firmly in cheek.)

Why not let your boy decide. He will do it eventually, I assure you.
