What Would You Do? - Delaware,OH

I went off of birth control in December, not to try to conceive, but because I was tired of having all of those extra hormones in my body, just kind of wanted to get back to "me". We've used condoms every time since. I had two periods after going off of the pill. I'm not super regular, more like every 32-ish days rather than 28 days. My last period was 47 days ago. I've been feeling kind of sick to my stomach and not feeling like eating too much, crampy on and off, but no sign of my period. With both of my pregnancies I felt so crampy like my period was coming but it never did, and pregnancy tests have always come out as a dark positive line on the first try.

I've taken two pregnancy tests in the last three days and they were both negative, but a really faint negative. I'm going to take another one on Friday morning (which will be 50 days) if I haven't started my period. What would you do if it's negative? I'm thinking of calling my GYN at that point. I'm 30 yrs old and shouldn't be premenopausal... just not sure why I wouldn't have a period for so long. Any ideas/suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Let me explain about the faint negative... The test is one line horizontally if you're negative, and one horizontal AND vertical (making a plus sign) if you're positive. I got one horizontal line- a negative, but the line was EXTREMELY faint, like I had to strain to see if there was even a line there at all, and had to have my husband look at it and he also had to really look hard to see any line. The "control" liine that shows at bottom of the test to show that it has in fact soaked up the urine and read it showed up very dark, so I know the test was working but it was a faint negative line. So I'm not really sure why everyone is saying I can't have a faint negative when that's exactly what I'm looking at on the test.

Also, I'm not stressed about possibly getting pregnant. If we are it would be a blessing. I do have some other MAJOR stress in my life, and didn't think that was attributing to the late period until a few of you mentioned stress... I know that happens, but my stress brain didn't put two and two together.

I'm going to take another test on Friday. If it comes back faint again I'm going to make an appt with the doctor to have a blood test done to be sure... don't want to enjoy a glass (or more) of wine if I am actually pregnant. If it comes back a definate negative I'm going to just wait it out, and it's probably the stress.

couple of things, first, you can't get a faint negative, if you are getting a plus sign or two lines, even if the second line is super faint you are in fact pregnant, the line will get darker as more of the hormones build up, could just be that it is really early. Second, a normal cycle doesn't mean 28 days, if you are having a 32 day cycles it is always about 32 days that is still a normal cycle. 28 days is just the average.

Oh and someone mentioned a digital test, generally they need more hormones in order to show a positive, so they are more likely to give you a false negative if you are testing early.

If you have been on the pill for a long time, it may take you a while to be "regular" again. I would call your doctor to be sure, but if the test is negative then you are not likely pregnant. The test the doctor will administer is the same one you buy in the pharmacy.

your hormones are probaby still resetting themselves, you've only been off the pill for 2 mos so a new regular pattern hasnt had time to set. If you arent pregnant just pay attention to your cycle and within 6 mos you should know what your new normal is going to be. Plus the stress of hoping the condom is doing it's job can cause you to be late or not have one at all or have a very long one when you do start. It's hard to be a woman isnt it?

I would call the doctor and set up an appointment. It could be something like your thyroid or you body is still regulating itself after the birth control. Good luck

You can't have a really faint neg. You can have a really faint positive, in which case it may be a false positive. Check the pg test insert for those. If you don't fall into the false pos category, or still don't get your period, then make an appointment with your GYN.

As far as why your period would be so late.....there are many reasons, the top two being stress or weight (messes with the hormones).

I agree with most of the other moms, stress is really h*** o* your body and will impact your hormones which impact your period. I would add one more to the mix, a change in activity level can cause a change in your cycles. I used to run like a mad woman and never had my period. Now, not so much. But definitely stress can cause big problems.
Maybe you can go around a bunch of PMSing women. That always throws me into my period.
Oh, and make sure your tests are not expired. I bought some way back when and they were expired on the shelf! That can cause problems with accuracy.

The test you take on Friday should be with the Clearblue Easy Digital test! There is no second guessing the lines!!! It straight out tells you "pregnant" or "not pregnant". Only test I used for my last two pregnancies, and it has been accurate EVERY time I have used it. Pregnant or not!!!

There is a good chance you got a false negative on the home tests. It takes a while for a period to get normal. I haven't had sex in 5 years, since I left my daughter's father. I am almost 35 and I had two periods with a week in between. I was told sometimes periods get funky sometimes. BUT I was also off my thyroid meds. I would have them do some blood work, it may be a hormone thing. I would figure out if you are pregnant first (I got pregnant at 30 and my fiance was suppose to be sterile...condoms aren't 100%) then worry about the bad things...worrying won't help

Are you sure you're reading the tests right? With most test (with the exception of the ones with the actual words), there is one line if it is negative and two if it is positive.

Yes, I agree with the other posters. You haven't been off bc long enough to be regulated AND stress, weight, etc. can have an effect on your cycle. I've been off bc for almost a year, have had a regular cycle for over 7 months and all of a sudden my cycle synced with my best friend - by 15 days! Mine actually came 15 days early - so less stress than being 15 days late - but what a surprise! Now I'm on her schedule! Funny how that happens!

When I first went off the pill it took my body over a YEAR to get back to a 'normal' schedule. I would go 3 months between periods, then 3 weeks, etc. It was stressful because I *always* thought I was pregnant!

As for the 'faint negative', get one of those digital tests and/or go see your doc.
