What Will a Few Teaspoons of Stinky Jello Do?

My 4.5 year old son found a past-due-date jello cup and ate a few spoonfuls out of it! Then he brought it to me saying it smells bad. It was really stinky.
Will he get food poisoning? When should I expect symptoms? What should I do?
I am waiting for the doctor's office to call me back...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The nurse said he will probably be fine, and to call back in case he has any symptoms.
I also found out it is not a jello cup but Trader Joe's natural black cherry gel cups, so there is no gelatin in there but instead "Carrageenan". I do not know which is worse... He almost never eats jello or gel cups, and he had to go and find a spoiled one!!!

Carregeenan is a natural product made from sea weed. It's used to thicken things in much the same way as gelatin. It's not harmful. He has no better chance of getting food poisoning from carregeenan than from gelatin.

The main symptoms of food poisoning is vomiting and diarrhea. It's highly unlikely that he would get seriously sick. He'd vomit up the stuff within a couple of hours and then he'd be fine in a couple more hours.

I've had food poisoning a few times in my 70 years. I've gotten sick within a couple of hours. Vomited and pooped. Went to sleep. Woke up the next morning feeling just fine.

Poison Control will help you right away, but personally, I think everything will be fine.

I see you've already found your answer but was just gonna tell you that I've been on the phone with the doctor and poison control plenty of times, and no matter what it is, unless it's toxic, the answer is almost always "they will be fine but might have mild diarrhea if they ingested enough" :)

i think you with the ladies' help have your answer...i was just going to share that my SIX year old, got in big trouble the other day- my husband bought me some "raw" shea butter or something (he bought it from a friend who buys it wholesale, so i can't remember exactly what it is)- it looks a lot like granola actually, very chunky, crumbly, and different hues of brown, NOT like "butter" at all. anyway, my six year old just happened to mention, "oh yeah, mom that stuff's nasty!" and i couldn't believe it - i thought he was old enough to know better than to just LICK random things - but he sure did! so don't feel too bad.
