And looking back, would you change it? Are there new songs out that you would've picked? I have a friend getting married and she is looking for ideas.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Some of you have mentioned that your Wedding and Song were nontraditional - So I feel led to share. Those are the ones that crack me up. The reason I am no help to my friend is I have a nontraditional story of my own. Several yrs ago when my then boyfriend was in college, I surprised him with tickets to a Pink Floyd concert in Texas Stadium. All our friends were going but It was sold out and he was dissapointed that we couldn't go. When he found out that I had gotten tickets and made arrangements to get him off work and hotel reservations and had gone to all that trouble - well I guess he felt I was finally worth marrying. SO, he went out and bought a ring. I had no idea. We were at the concert with all our friends and there was a light rain. We were laughing and having a great time. Then the lights went down and they started playing "wish you were here." He got on one knee and with tears flowing he told me how many times he had layed in his dorm room playing that song and missing me. He put the ring on my finger and everyone started crying and clapping and then laughing and yelling and it was really amazing. So - I was married at a Pink Floyd concert and Wish you were here was my wedding song. How crazy is that!

Oh my gosh, yes. It's called "Come Live With Me" by Ray Charles. My husband and I were driving home one day while listening to a random radio station...the DJ said something about this recently discovered reel of tape with Charles' music. As we started listening to it, I got goosebumps. We had to sit in our driveway to finish listening to it while thinking the exact same thing...why wasn't this song around when WE got married? It's on the album "Ray Sings, Basie Swings", which is a bonus because it's with the actual Count Basie Orchestra. You can find it on iTunes. Well, good luck to the happy couple!

Our wedding was not traditional and was a bit irreverent I suppose? I walked to Star Wars' "The Imperial March". We flew in helicopters into the Grand Canyon for the ceremony, and in everyone's headphones was "Ride of the Valkyries". Our first dance when we got back to town at the party was Stand By Me by Ben E. King. The ceremony inside the canyon was lovely and quiet, just enjoying the moment and the scenery, but our actual "wedding song" was a punk/pop cover of "Danny's Song" (even though we ain't got money, I'm so in love with you honey), covered by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. This version of the song was good for us: happy instead of mushy...and 6 weeks after the wedding, we got pregnant, and had a son! We have money now, we're not "just starting out" anymore, but the song makes us smile to remember how far we've come. I think it's important to find a song that is fun, makes you smile, and reflects some of the personality of BOTH bride and groom.
However: EVERYONE loves our wedding CDs (CD1 especially), which we made ourselves, and created a cover photo from a photo of the Grand Canyon with our names and wedding date for the more quiet and traditional songs, and a CD label was a light photo of us together holding hands, and the wedding date, for the "different" CD. Wouldn't change anything about it because it shows who we were and where we were in our lives, it's about our personality instead of what was expected. I've used the quieter CD for date nights and nice dinners, in hospital when I was having both our babies, the other is great for driving and fun.
CD #1 (Not in order on CD but by artists): At Last by Etta James; I've Got to See You Again, Turn Me On, Come Away With Me, The Nearness of You, Shoot the Moon all by Norah Jones (she was spread throughout the CD); Keeper of the Stars (awesome) by T. Byrd; Wonderful Tonight (Clapton), Stand By Me (King), To Make You Feel My Love (Garth Brooks), Unforgettable (Nat AND Natalie Cole), It's Your Love (McGraw), I'll Stand By You (the Pretenders), She's Got a Way (Billy Joel), From this Moment (Twain), Oh Girl (Chi-Lites), When You are Old (McBride), What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong), Dreaming My Dreams (Cranberries), Take My Breath Away (Berlin), and Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Israel Kamakawiwo)
CD 2: Imperial March, Ride of the Valkyries, First Date (Blink 182), White Wedding by Billy Idol (it snowed that day so that was cool), Danny's Song and Nobody Does It Better (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes), Too Good to Be True by Lauryn Hill (AWESOME), Lonely Road of Faith (Kidd Rock), Never Be Alone Again and Painted Veil (Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts), All Through the Night and Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper), Fools Rush In (UB40), The Reason (Hoobastank), Collide (great) by Howie Day, You're Like Coming Home (Lonestar), What A Wonderful World It Would Be (Sam Cooke--one of my favorites), A Big Ol' Hunk O' Love, All Shook Up, and I want You, I Need You, I Love You (Elvis), and finally Unchained Melody (Righteous Brothers).

"You Had Me At Hello" by Kenny Chesney. It fits us perfectly, like it had been written about us. We also had "Everything" by Michael Buble. For our wedding party dance we did "All Night Long" by Lionel Ritchie, corny I know, but I love how festive the song is and it set the mood to get the party started! I wouldn't change anything, except I wish our church had allowed us to use a special song for the unity candle, I wanted to use "Face of Love" by Jewel (it's on her Christmas album).

I walked down the aisle to 'Apple Blossom Time' by the Andrews Sisters, because I got married in May outdoors, so it was perfect. Here's that song:

http://tinyurl.com/245vtzd

Our first song was 'I Will' by the Beatles. I loved it because I LOVE the Beatles, and it is more happy and upbeat, as opposed to the usual slow love songs that are played at weddings. My husband liked it, because as a non-dancer, it is less than 2 minutes long, lol. Here's that song:

http://tinyurl.com/nhpzyf

And our last dance was 'Baby I Love Your Way' by Big Mountain. We chose this one because it was the first song we ever danced together to. And since we were going to Jamaica for our honeymoon, the Caribbean sound fit perfectly. And mostly, it's just a great, beautiful song. Here's that song:

http://tinyurl.com/2wm6x8x

No regrets, LOVE all 3 songs, and still very happily married 10 years, and 2 kids later. Have fun picking! :)

When we walked into the reception I had the band playing "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen b/c every wedding we'd been to together prior to ours we would say "another one bites the dust". He had no idea and it was hilarious! We dated 7 years...
For our first dance we had a Chris LeDoux song "Look at you Girl" that he picked out.
"Just look at you, girl
Standin' here beside me
Starlight on your hair
Lookin' like a dream I dreamed somewhere
And look at me, girl
You got me actin' just like a lover
In an old time picture show
And how I got the part -- I just don't know
But it's written all across your face
Plain as it can be
You're the one that I was lookin' for
Now you're all that I can see"
and for the Father-Daugther dande we had "Daddy's Hands" by Holly Dunn and I danced with my Dad and my hubby danced with his daughter.
We've been married 8 years now and I would marry him all over again just exactly the way it was that night! It was perfect :)

The rest of the lyrics:

CHORUS:

You mean everything to me
And I'd do anything to have you stay forever
I'm an ordinary man
But I feel like I could do anything in the world
When I look at you, girl

Verse:

Just look at you, girl
Walkin' here beside me
Misty morning light
I see my own reflection in your eyes
And just smile at me, girl
With eyes that tell a story
That words can never say tellin' me your love is gonna stay
And we're standin' right together now
In everything we do
And if my world should come apart
I'll still be lovin' you

REPEAT CHORUS

Ok I read through the responses & I didn't see any of my songs so I thought I'd go ahead & post. Our first dance song was Luna by the Smashing Pumpkins. My father/daughter dance song was Landslide by Fleetwood Mac (Dixie Chicks & Smashing Pumpkins both do a cover of this song as well). Our end of the night song was The Luckiest by Ben Folds.
We also did a CD as a wedding favor. Some are more "traditional" & other's had a special meaning to us.
1) Crush, The space between- Dave Matthews Band
2) What the world needs now- Jackie Deshannon
3) You're the first, the last, my everything- Barry White
4) Hey Jude, Something- The Beatles
5) Uptown Girl- Billy Joel
6) I want you to love me- Cheap Trick
7) Good Riddance (the time of your life)- Green Day
8) Your Song- Elton John
9) My Girl- Four Tops
10) Take me as I am- Wyclef John
11) They way you look tonight- Frank Sinatra
12) Everything she does- Sting
Hope that helps & gives your friend some ideas.

Our wedding song (first dance) was "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison, we wanted a classic rock style style and it was great. Not too slow, not too fast =)

I had always wanted it to be "Thank you" by Led Zeppelin and hubby wanted "Wonderful Tonight" by Clapton so we compromised on Van Morrison.

We also considered "By your side" by Sade and "Feels like home to me" by Chantal Krevuziak
