What Type of T.V. Do You Have and How Many in Your House?

Our 15 y/o old T.V. met its demise about a week ago. I am going to start looking for a new one but wanted to know what kind of T.V. you all have. We don’t have much knowledge on what is new out there as the only 2 we have in the house are this one, and another in the master bedrm, and that. T.V. is about 20 yrs old (o.k. don’t laugh!)! Hey if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it right? LOL!

Before I start researching, thought I would get ideas here.

Do you a flat screen? What size? Who is the maker? Are you happy with it?

There is no budget by the way, but also don’t want to go overboard as we don’t use it much except to watch cooking/travel, sports, news..... All of our family, friends and neighbors have T.V.(s) that are HUGE! LOL

Just curious too…how many t.v. do you have in your home? Most ppl we know have about 4-6. We only have 1 right now.

Do your kids have a t.v. in their room(s)? How typical is that?

Added: Are Costco and Amazon best places to buy? If not there, where did you get yours?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

AWESOME!! Thank you ALL so much for your advice and input! We are going to start "looking" this weekend but we're not in a hurry to buy. Man, T.V. sets are expensive!!

Seems that the majority of you suggested going to Costco, which will be our first trip this weekend, and maybe best buy. Sony Bravia, Vizio and Panasonic have gotten the most votes.

Honestly, if it were up to me we wouldn’t be getting one, but WOW! I haven’t seen my husband this excited about a large purchase for our home in a looooooooong TIME!!! LOL

My husband only sees the T.V. from the outside. I’m the one who always does all the research before making a large purchase.

SO Thanks again for giving me a great head start in my T.V. buying adventure! =-)

We have 5. One in basement, kitchen, living room, master, and 2 kids room. No fancy tvs here...the one in the kitchen has the vcr on the bottom...lol! Someday we would like a flat screen. We cant justify spending the money on it now. The one tv in my kids room is only set up to do movies...no cable. they are only 6 and 8.

My TV is great. It's a Toshiba but it's a hand me down that came from Singapore. It's really big and we would be devastated if it ever went out on us because we couldn't get another one this size.

We only have one in the living room. I don't think I would let my kids have any in their room. My husband's parents have TVs in all the rooms and when we go down to visit everyone is in a different room watching TV. I find it strange.

My husband and I have 'hand me down' tube TV's. They still work... We still use them. We have 6. Everyone that 'has to get the newest thing' gave us all of our TV's. : )

We have a large flat screen (hubby's dream/Sony) in our family room, smaller tv's in all 3 bedrooms, one larger one in the gameroom--mainly for Wii and one in our garage! Sooooo...that's 6.

Just a thought: I haven't had TV since my daughter was around 8 and I left my first marriage. She begged and wheedled for it at first, but we did so many projects, went so many places, and read so many good books she sort of forgot about it during a summer away from her school chums.

When school started again, she observed one day that her friends had such boring lives, because all they ever talked about were the television shows they watched.

Since you're more into function than fashion in your TV, you might want to look in local thrift shops. From what I've seen, used TVs are plentiful and cheap. For the last couple of years, I do have a small, used set that's dedicated to a couple of movies a week.

We like Best Buy and most of ours came from Best buy with excpetion of 2 Dell which came directly from Dell.

I'm probably on the high side.... for the number of tv's and $ in them. The new flat screens are getting lower in price right now and you should find a good deal. Best Buy has great deals often. Check out the weekly ad.

we have 2 46" Dell Plasma..... 1 in each game room upstairs These Dell's are over 5 yrs old and we paid around $3000 for each of them at the time. They are not used that often but when they are, they seem hot.

daughter (almost 16) has a small Sharp flat screen in her room that has a dvd player in in. Very small TV, great picture. Less than $200

Another guest room has a small Panasonic old model tv with VCR player in it. RARELY used

Guest room with a very small tv, great for a kitchen type tv old tv RARELY used.

Master bedroom down has Samsung flat screen HDTV

Our family area has twin TV's (hard to explain....yes... large area, fireplace is in middle, tv's are on each side of fireplace) These are both flat screen Sony Bravia HDTV around $1400 each at the time. Very good tv's, they have held up well for daily use.

The most used would be family room Bravias, daughter's Sharp and Master Samsung....all with no issues.

Hmm, that means we have......8 total tv's.

We only have two tv's. One in the master and one in the living room. We replaced the tv(19 in.) in the master with a Samsung flat screen(40 in.) and really like it. We will soon be replacing the tv(27 in.) in the living room with a Samsung flat screen(50 in.) as well. We have been happy with Samsung and purchased ours at Best Buy. Our children do not have tv's in their rooms (although they have asked for them).
I would go with a flat screen because they take up less space and can be put on the wall if desired. Just pick the size that best suits you.

We just bought a new tv since our old one stopped working, so this is all still new in my mind.

We got a Westinghouse 42 in. from Costco for a great price. We like ours, but will definitely have to add speakers. I think this is commom for newer tvs since there really isn't room on them for bigger, better sound.

A couple of things I learned (and I'm not a technical person):
LCDs have a flourescent light source
LEDs are really LCDs, but they have an LED light source
The Hz number refers to how fast the tv will show the action. 60 Hz is low, 120 Hz is good for most shows. You can go higher, but it's not necessary. If it's too low, then action will look shakey.
1080p refers to the number of lines on the screen. 720 or higher is high definition. 1080 gives a sharper picture.
The letter after that number is either p or i. Get the p, it has a sharper picture. We had an i and the difference is amazing. I don't understand the why behind that though.

Happy tv shopping!
