What Type of Sippy Cup to Buy?

Nuby has a sippy cup that doesn't have a straw and they are great! My son used them to transition and it took him a little getting used to but he did well with them. The nipple is very soft like a bottle so it is an easier transition then some of the ones with the hard top. Good Luck!

My suggestion, from years working with families and a lot of indepth training on the subject, is skip the sippy. If you DO go with a sippy, get the old fashioned ones that don't have the straw, no-spill nozzles, etc. Here's why:
Your child is capable of using a regular cup now with a little help from you. He'll catch on quickly.
There's a lot of evidence linking over-use of sippy's with delayed speech development because the sucking on the no-spill sippy is no different than that of a bottle. The motions required to use a regular cup develops the oral muscles needed for continued speech development.
New evidence links sippy cups with increased tooth decay. Put simply, kids sip on a sippy all day, and give the bacteria that rot your teeth a constant food supply (unless you use water only).
I understand the difficulty with the messes and spills when it comes to cup learning (my 15 mo dd has been using a cup since 4 mo with my help, and it takes patience and time.) But it's a myth that a sippy cup is necessary to make that transition! At meals, give him a regular cup, with a couple of sips of water at a time, and help him figure out how to use it. Then he only gets wet if he spills.

we bought every kind out there at first. i settled on the gerber because i liked the one piece valve...easy to clean and put on. We threw away all of our other cups.

I found a really good one at walmart. It is a transition sippy cup.. the only sippy cup my son will use... Nuk makes it... it is about 5 or 6 dollars... but it is worth it.. it is blue with sailboats on it... this one is easy to clean.. the handles come off, the nipples comes off, there are no straws, or anything...

Playtex was by far the best for us. They were so,so on cleaning but over all great.Very little spills also. I kept finding cups that leaked or wen she got excited and shaking her arm,than there was more leaking out.

Watch out for MOLD on all cup that have the plastic "stoppers" in the lid. Straws to can get VERY moldy in the little kids cups!

Boil once a week for about 10-15 min! that should help with that!!!Goodluck!

I swear by Playtex. My son has used them since he was 6 mos. old and they have different stages.

I put ours in the dishwasher and they come out perfectly clean. I put the little plastic part in with the silverware.

However, if you don't have a dishwasher, I use to let them soak in some hot water, then wash the cup and top as usual. To get the gunk out of the nipple part and the lid, I used a bottle brush that had a and for cleaning nipples on a baby bottle. That worked quite well also.

Be careful with the Nuby - My son chewed the sippy part and I had to take the pieces out of his mouth. We love the elmo ones only two pieces the top and the bottom and no little pieces.

We also have the Advent sippy cups which we hate - a million pieces and it leaks

I have used the Avent sippy cup. It comes with handles that you can use or remove. It also comes with a valve that you can use so that when they turn it upside it does not spill. You can also remove the valve if you wanted to. it is removable so it can be cleaned and you can also buy repleacement valves if lost!Actually, I just remembered - you may also put a regular bottle nipple on it if needed. I went through a time of sippy cup fustration, I LOVE the "first years" sippy cups. They are easy to clean, easy to drink from , and DON'T leak. You can buy them anywhere, we got ours at Toys R Us. Best of luck.

Hi I have found that the gerber transition cups are good when transitioning the child out the girl that i watch is almost off it cuz of these cups and they are not too hard to clean.

the first years are the best i have ever tried, they have elmo and cars and princesses, they don't leak, not even when they are shaken and they are a one piece valve

Transitioning from a bottle to a cup I like the Nuby.

My son has been using the Nuby with the soft top. There are no straws or any valves so it's so easy to keep clean. It never leaks, or hasn't yet. My son will be 1 next week and he's been using it since he was 5 months old. He has alot of others but does the best with this one. I hope it helps, good luck.

My suggestion is to buy the Gerber cups (we like the ones that change color when there is cold liquid in the cup). The best price I've found for them is at Target, they're less then $5 for two. The inserts are easy to put in and take out, there is only one hole and the piece itself is an oval approximately 2.5" long. Whatever you decide to buy make sure you stick with one brand/kind so you don't drive yourself nuts trying to match up valves with covers!
