What to Feed 9 Month Baby with Diarrea and Occasional Vomits

My grandson has diarrhea for the past two days. What do you suggest that I feed him besides formula, pedyalite, juice and water. He had an ear and throat infection and is taking antibiotics. He does not have any fever.
Please advise ASAP. Thanks for any advise you can give me.

I would make sure that the baby at least takes pedialite that way the baby will not dehydrate. At that age that can happen very quickly. If you can get him to keep that down a couple of times then try the formula again.

Make sure he's not getting dehydrated. If he stops having wet diapers or tears when he cries you should take him to see a doctor. It doesn't take that long for someone his age. Is he taking Omnicef? The white antibiotic that's once a day? That causes diarrhea a lot. If so, maybe he could switch to something else. The BRAT diet is usually advised for diarrhea. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.

Since he has an infection, he is beyond having a fever. The antibiotics will give him the diarrhea. Try to feed him some rice, or other soft easily digestible foods. If you have any plain yogurt (preferably) or any yogurt w/ the live cultures, that helps too. Call the pediatrician's office and talk to the doctor on call, that's what they are there for. Good luck!

I was told to give them white rice, toasts or breads...

The best thing to do for a baby with those symptoms is to call his/her pediatrician for advice. If you wait longer you may be putting the baby at risk for dehydration. Call the pediatrician!

I am a nurse and will advise on what I know. It is possible that your baby is having diarrhea due to the antibiotic. That is a common side effect of antibiotics. It will end when he is done with the course. It sounds like that may be the problem since he does not have a fever. If he develops a fever, take him to his doctor for further work up. It is also possible that it could be a viral infection which is only supportive care. I would recommend not feeding him juice as that will irritate the stomach. Pedialyte is the best for diarrhea because it helps restore the lost electrolytes that don't get absorbed from the diarrhea. In a child or adult you should stay away from milk or milk products but your baby needs its formula. Whatever you do, do not stop the antibiotics unless your baby develops a rash, hives or severe vomiting. Your baby needs the antibiotic to clear up the ear infection. Follow up with your baby's doctor when the antibiotics are done to make sure its ear is okay and throat. If it is still having diarrhea then make sure to tell the doctor.
