So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We will try things out one at a time to see what works best for her. I think I'll start with the homemade fennel tea, and then work through the different brands. Thanks also for the recall information. In the meantime, she was able to see the GI specialist, and she does have ongoing reflux in addition to gassiness and teething, so she will start Prevacid as well.

I really like Baby's Bliss because it doesn't have to be refrigerated. So I can just keep it in the diaper bag and have it whenever I need it, whether at home or on the go.

L.,
My son also has reflux and just acts miserable sometimes with a tummy ache. I got Baby Bliss by mom, http://www.babysbliss.com/default.aspx
and it takes about 10 minutes and he is sooooo much better.
I buy it at Walgreens it is a little pricey, $9.99, but so worth it. Good luck =). S.

We asked our doctor about gripe water and he said that the FDA just started to allow it to be sold in the US within the last five years. You could buy it before then, but it wasn't regulated. Even now, it's not regulated by the FDA. Only one brand is. It's called Colic Ease. All the other brands claim to be 100% natural but the truth is, there are A LOT of additives in it. I found this website that gives a lot of helpful information about gripe water and what the FDA allows. www.colicease.com It seems like the safest choice for a little baby...

I like Wellements. It's natural and organic. My sweet little baby has had colic very bad and I've tried every home remedy, gas drops, dissolving tablets, etc and nothing seems to relieve her as much as the Wellements which is for colic, teething, etc. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I never used gripe water, but I remember there was a recall having to do with it recently, so talk to your pediatrician or a trusted source before using it. Good luck, A.

Hi L.,

My daughter has really bad reflux and we've found great success with Little Tummy's Gripe Water (sold at Babies R Us). It's also an instant cure for the hiccups!!
For teething, we're using Hylands Teething Tablets (also sold at BRU). Our pediatrician recommended them and they really seem to work :)

Good luck,
A.

At a "regular" store, I found some Nature's Remedy with ginger in it. It didn't work AT ALL for my little guy who is now 2. There was some Little Tummys, too.

We ended up (for this new guy---he's 5 months old) getting a recommendation from a holistic healer to try regular Mylanta--it has peppermint (for some stomach upset relief), and it has something else, plus simethecone (for some gassy). Anyway, it's not typical, and it does work very well. The dose was 1/4 teaspoon, versus "colic tablets" from Hylands, and the ginger-root based ones.

Hope you find something that works! Pepperminty seemed to work best for us. Another recommendation was mixing some sweet potato with another item (recipe online), but I couldn't see doing that with my tiny baby!!

I have been using a brand called GentleCare. It works really well for gas, hiccups, colic, and cranky fussy baby due to a hurting tummy. And it really is all natural. I have used those other things like Mylacon on occasion and the gripe water worked better every time. I highly recommend gripe water!

I'll suggest babies magic tea to deal with reflux and for teething you can choose any type of gripe water. All are OK.

We used gripe water and all it helped with was hiccups. Our little guy had colic and teething and it didn't help with either. We LOVE hylands teething tablets for teething. They work great. You can get teething tablets at healthfood stores and even at walmart. The if you go to the healthfood store to check out gripe water, read whats in it. Maybe if you gave your little one something with peppermint in it it would help with the tummy upset. As for reflux I don't know. I was always greatful ours had colic because he grew out of it around 4 months. Hope you some more helpful answers than mine. Good luck mama.

My English friend taught me how to make my own. It worked well for us. Just make a tea using fennel seeds (whole, found in natural food section). Strain and refridgerate. Use about a tablespoon. This was better and more affordable than any purchased brand we used.

I am a 26 yr. old mom. I will be honest I have never heard of gripe water. But my son was easily prone to upset stomach, and teething was bad. What always worked for me was to boil 4oz. of water with a peppermint in it. let that cool and then finish the bottle with another 2oz. for a total of 6oz. of water. That calmed him down in no time. What also worked for me was teething tablets, colic tablets. Just place on the tongue and they instantly dissolve. So no worries of him choking.

As far as reflux. I had that and so did my son. I made sure he sat upright after finishing a meal for 20-30 mins.
See if that works. Good Luck.

Always best to make it yourself.
Mine always responded well to Chamomile Tea!
We would make a cup, maybe put a tad bit of molasses in it or pure maple syrup to sweeten it a little, and let it cool down and put in a bottle.

Also try the Hylands (you can get anywhere) teething tablets (they dissolve under the tongue and are tiny), or the teething gel- neither has any drugs- mainly chamomile. They do work!

If your child has acid reflux, she may have food allergies. Both my boys were born with food allergies that bothered them through my breast milk. Once I eliminated these items, they both digested well and had no more tummy aches or excessive spiting-up. Also giving children Bifodophilus in apple sauce or something like that, will help their intestines and eliminate a lot of gas. I hope you find the answers you need.

I have only tried one kind and that was by Little Tummy's. My son had gotten hiccups really bad and suffered from acid reflux. I would give him the grip water when he would get hiccups and they would go away instantly.

Wow, I wish I could remember what brand we used. We had to order it. The one thing I do remember is that our pediatrician said NOT to order it from Canada, because many brands in Canada actually had a little alcohol in them. Great, huh? But, it worked wonders for our son. We loved it. It's good to hear that it may actually be approved to be sold in the US and FDA regulated. As we prepare for our second (possibly third) baby, it's one thing we'll be wanting to have on hand. Good luck!

Hi,
My son had very bad reflux to the point where I slept with him in the upright position for a week until we got into the doctor for a perscription. We had to try a few before we finaly found the one that worked best for him.
As far as gripe water goes the one that worked best for us was Wellements, although I also agree with the lady who said her English friend told her to boil fennel. Thats what this gripe water smells like, and it's all natural. Anyway it did the trick for us when my son was gassy.
Hope it works for you!

Camilia. It's all-natural and works great. Another Mom recommended it to me and everyone else I've recommended it to has liked it. You can get it in the baby sections of Whole Foods and Vitamin Cottage.
