What's Your Fave Peanut Butter Brand?

Costco sells, I mean "sold" Peanut Butter. It was Kirkland brand and we loved it and it was a good price too. They recently stopped selling it and now my husband is all stressed because it is essentially a main staple in our house. (He doesn't gripe about much but he's griping about this!) He saw "Skippy" on their shelves there tonight and looked at the allegedly all natural ingredients and saw "Partially Hydrogenated Oil" and he refuses to buy that anything with that particular ingredient in it.

So, what's your fave PB brand and where do you go to get it?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

We won't buy anything with hydrogenated oil in it. Nor will we buy anything with Palm Oil because of the huge problems that causes with health, deforestation, killing habitats and it threatens wildlife. I try to be an educated consumer and would rather pay a little more for a product that doesn't have that ingredient than be, what I consider, part of the problem. It's not a popular topic, but here is little FYI on palm oil:

So, looks like I will be heading to the stores that have peanut butter with peanuts and salt, that's all! I don't mind stirring.

Hi Diana~

Are you serious..... we JUST did a taste test TEN MINUTES AGO with JIF and SKIPPY. I put JIF on one side of my husband's bagel and then ran out. So I got out a jar in the pantry that's Skippy for the other side of the bagel. He didn't know which was which peanut butter only I did.

WELL.... he voted for JIF. I have to agree with him! It's such a coincidence that you asked this just after I did the "test" and then sat down to read Mampedia tonight.

So... we only did the "test" with 2 brands. When my kids were little they helped me make homemade peanut butter and that's easy to do!

I only buy Jiff and my kids love it. I have this weird quirk that I must have the first bite of a newly opened peanut butter jar. My kids and husband all think I'm nuts. :)

Trader Joe's Peanut Butter! They have both creamy and crunchy, as well as organic or just regular. The only ingredient: peanuts. Check the labels on many of the other brands - most of them also contain sugar.

Most of the time, we go to Whole Foods and get the freshly ground honey roast peanut butter...mmm...if for some reason they are out of those nuts (boo!) we do the regular one, or I get the natural store brand (or any natural one where the only ingredient is peanuts and perhaps salt). HTH.

I have always preferred Jif. But when my kids were much smaller Skippy sold TUBES of peanut butter and I LOVED those (and so did they.. I know I know.. bad mommy, right? lol). So my daughter decided she only liked Skippy. That's fine, it is pretty good (not great but it works ya know?). My kids still say they prefer it. My husband, however, prefers Smart Balance.
About 10 years ago, before it went out of business, we loved a small privately owned company called Sorrell's Pickard peanut butter. It was heavenly.

Oh.. and I stocked up on some tonight at the store (both brands). Because I saw the article about peanut prices, too. Sounds like they expect them to almost double. Not a shock really... it seems like everything is like that these days. But I actually live in the peanut state (GA) and our weather was not normal rainfall during the growing season this year at all.

Jif all natural has palm oil, but not partially hydrogenated. I just checked the label. The ingredients are pretty much the same as the regular Jif, so I'm not sure what makes it all natural, but it is the same price, so I figure why not. There are more all-natural versions out there, but my husband (and now daughter) like the creamy and slightly sweet, rather than just peanuts and salt.

They now have all natural peanut butters that don't separate (although I don't know how). I personally also like the TJs. But we went to my parents recently and after a visit I asked my daughter how she liked their TJs, and she suggested that we bring some of ours to their house, so they would "normal" peanut butter.

i adore jif, and was so sad to read the label just recently and find that it contains FULLY hydrogenated vegetable oils. that crud gets into the human body and pretty much never leaves. i cheat on *healthy* for certain things that i love, but i just can't put that into my poor old system any more and sure can't do it to my family. but i'd rather not eat peanut butter (sniffle) than eat that nasty stuff that has to be refrigerated. i'm currently checking out natural organic brands, but may be forced into buying my own peanuts and using the blend-tec to make my own.

Two of my daughters love peanut butter, and thanks to one of them being my middle daughter (who has Autism and Sensory Integration Disorder ie texture issues on top of lactose intolerance) we have to be careful about what kind she eats, but she's also very picky about flavor and texture. We found a winner all around with Peanut Butter & Company brand. They have tons of different flavors and they're ALL VEGAN which means she can even have chocolate flavored peanut butter and not worry that it's going to have milk in it. She also loves maple flavor and white chocolate. They've tried honey flavor and enjoyed it.

They're all natural without any hydrogenated gunk and I can get them at a reasonable cost at my Walmart. They're found online too but at twice the cost. The web site has more variety of flavor, esp if you like to use peanut butter in savory cooking (think Thai).

We love peanut butter, but I get whatever is on sale in a big tub of it.
That way, we have plenty for peanut butter cookies as well as bagels, toast or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We also like peanut butter on celery and apples.
The last great deal I got was Safeway brand. It's good and creamy.
As I said, we like it for the cookies.

We used to get the Smucker's All Natural PB - it has peanuts and salt as the only ingredients. Peanuts make their own oil naturally so it seems stupid to take out the peanut oil and then replace it with something else. We do have to stir it up when you first open it and then refrigerate it afterwards. It's available just about anywhere.

We just found that Target's brand - Market Pantry - has started selling an all natural PB that's the same - just 2 ingredients. We're trying that now, and it seems to taste the same as the Smuckers.

JIF, low fat, creamy, the natural version..... so he would not approve! But I'm a "choosy mom". (Skippy/Peter Pan... yuck).

There is an organic brand I really like that is healthy, I get at HEB, but I can't remember the name of it, and I can rarely find it. I once got the wrong brand and it was sooo nasty... Go to Central Market, Whole Foods, Kroger... they usually have a lot of natural and healthier versions.

Remember, on the natural ones, they look gross after a bit because the oils separates from the spread. You just have to stick your knife in it and stir it up before using.
