What's the Best Potty for My Little Girl?

Hello Moms. I posted less than two months ago - my now 17 month old is totally ready to potty train - announces when she has to go poop and pee, wakes up dry from naps or stays dry all AM etc. And she's learned to pull her pants down & take off her dipe (this latter acheivement not so helpoful as you can imagine). SO, I bought a Baby Bjorn potty back after getting everyone's advice to start training - and she tried to sit on it many times but it has a big fixed in place splashguard (horn) in front that would hit her in the bum as she was trying to sit and sh'd jump right off. I finally returned it because she wouldn't even sit on it with her clothes on. I bought a seat that goes on the toilet, and sometimes have gotten her to sit on that but only for a second. I think she feel unstable up there. WHen we sit on the toilet, she'll sit on the flat seat on the floor and read, so I know I just have to find the right potty. I've looked at Target, Walmart & Babies r us and none of them are what I am looking for. I don't want any that sing or play music or have stuff all over them - a plain potty with no splashguard or horn in the front. ANy advice?

The best one is one that she will use.

Get her input.. let her pick it out. Seriously.

My girl had a blazing fit when I put her on her throne.. but was very excited to use the one she picked out herself.

The key here is let her be the leader.

Good luck.

We also used the safety first potty with the splash guard that is NOT attached). You can choose whether to mount it on it's own base on the floor, or on the top of the regular potty - and it has handles on the side to hold onto. It's not soft and cushiony, but neither is the regular toilet - ha ha. We also have the "dora seat", which is just a donut - we used that when we were in the beginning stages and didn't want her to feel that she couldn't go when we were in public or at people's houses that don't have children... so we'd bring that one with us in plastic bags... and now we like that one best because it's the most compact and most easily removable and easiest to put on for my 3.5 year old daughter. Now we have one for each bathroom too. Neither one of these play music or have those extra silly "bells and whistles".

several different potties have a removable splashguard for boys. We have the elmo potty that has a removable one and my oldest had a fisher price potty that had a removable one.

I just had a cheapie potty chair from Walmart for my girls and I put it in any room. Not just the bathroom to start with. That way they would sit on it and get used to it. I'm not too keen on really pushing too early. My middle child (now 6) was showing signs of being ready to potty train at 18 months. So I pulled out the potty for her and did just this. She didn't actually fully train until she was 3. She also had gotten toddlers diarrhea in the midst of training and even though she tried so hard to get to the potty I had to put diapers back on her because she just couldn't make it all the time. But anyways, there's no time frame and they will all train differently. For your own sanity you really need to follow your child's lead. I would even bring the potty chair in the bathroom with me when I went and invite the girls to sit on their seat next to me while I went. Bring a book for them to read in there too. Good luck. It can be a long process.

My daughter has 2 Fisher Price potties. Both have smooth seats for sitting. One is the Royal Stepstool Potty: http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2011&e=detail&.... We didn't bother putting batteries in for all the sound effects. The other potty I am no longer finding on their website. It has a removable splash guard as well.
If your daughter is interested in using the big potty, make sure she has a stable place to rest her feet.

When you're ready to venture into public restrooms, I highly reccommend this portable seat from One Step Ahead: http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId...

Good luck!

i just got a Safety First potty. It was like $17 at target (one of the cheapest ones)--an no music or weird stuff. It doesn't have the male "pee pee guard" on it--but a sep piece that you can snap in if you have a male child--so my girl can slide right in and sit. The potty seat lifts out of the base and can then but put on top of an adult toilet and the base can be flipped over and converted into a stepstool--so it grows with your kid. i really like it and it's cheap.

The potty that worked out best for us was Safety 1st - Comfy Cushy 3-in-1 Potty, we got it at walmart for under $20. We liked it because of all the requirements that you were looking for as well. She used it as her potty, now it clicks into our potty and the base is used as a step stool to brush her teeth. Also during the whole potty training we took it on many a car rides because she was too scared to use the big potty that public places and grandma's had to offer, now she is ok with it all. Good luck and stay consistent. My daughter was the same age when she when she acted the way your child is now, announcing of the pee and poop and pulling the diaper off. We made up a potty song for the first time she went, now almost six months later she sings the song to herself when she goes!

When my daughter traine (she is now 3) I used a regular Dora potty seat and placed a stool under her feet so that they would not hang. She would step on the stool and sit on the potty without difficulty. Now she rarely uses either.
Good luck!

we got the safety first potty, it has a cushy seat and the top even pops off and fits on the big toilet when she's ready for that. in the end, my daughter pretty much bypassed the little toilets and ended up using the seat on the big pot for the most part. the little seat was just a game, and now her stuffed animals use it to go to the bathroom.

hope this helps. we now use the big girl potty (sans any potty seat) and have since before she turned two. yes, we have to put her on and help wipe, but it was the most successful for us.

I bought the cheap seat at BRU first years I think? No bells and whistles to speak of. It has a slash guard but, it snaps off. Most of them snap off, I actually think the Bjorn is the only one that doesn't.

As for her not likeing the seat that fits right on the potty, you may ust need a higher stool. She has to be able to rest her feet comfortably on the stool in front of the potty (as an adult does on the floor). I found that made a big difference for us.
Good Luck

I think you should be able to remove the splashguard on the potties. I have three boys, so we used them, but I believe they come off...maybe I am wrong.

Good luck! It sounds like you will have a very easy go at this...I am envious!!

The only thing i can suggest is to make sure the potty has 4 legs on it. The first potty i got had a flat bace and it tipped over every time my then two year old would sit on it!

We ended up with the one that sings when they go potty. I turned off the singing part becasue the first tiem she pee-ed in it it the song scared her so bad that she refused to sit on the thing for a month! The potty itself is a good one though. 4 sturdy legs and it's easy to empty and clean. It also had a removable splash guard. My 23 month old is going fairly regularly in it now.

BUT i do have to warn you that from what i have heard if they train before or during their 2's they can regress and stop using the potty very easily and often.

I have actually found that it is easier when the kids are in diapers. Then i don't have to visit every single toilet in every single store i drag them to! (i have three kids under three! things get tight!)

Hi,

I would recommend the Graco Soft Seat Potty. It's very simple, the splash guard is optional, and you can transition the seat onto the big potty when your daughter is ready. It can also be used as a stepstool in the bathroom.

Good Luck!

I think a stool at the real potty with maybe the toilet insert. Why train them twice on two different potty's? Good luck

We used a Dora seat, after awhile she wasn't interested and used the step stool to perch herself on the regular toilet seat ("like a big girl!").
