What's the Best Money You Ever Spent on Making Life Easier?

Hi Ladies,

I thought I'd ask you this question because I am SO happy that I had a large coat closet converted into a pantry on one side and closet on the other. It makes my life so much easier because I feel more organized with the pantry. My mom tried talking me out of it by saying stuff like..... "Oh save your money for more important things.... you don't need that." Well.... true, I don't NEED it, but it sure has made life easier since I can fit my canned foods in there, trays, tuperware, etc... without having to run to the laundry room downstairs. (where I used to have to store the stuff and w/o any organization. Yes, it cost around $800 (would have been cheaper if I or my husband could have installed it, but I didn't want to attempt that project. Even though I usually don't mind tackling household projects), but again, the cost was worth it to me.

Oh... installing hardwood floors in my home was money well spent, too. I like how easy it is to clean hardwood floors versus carpeted floors. (I still have the family room carpeted and rugs in the kids' rooms.

So what was worth spending $$ on in your home? (including the yard, too.) I just thought we could get some ideas from each other. And... if you'd like to include what was a waste of money, I'd like to read that too.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

WOW!! Thanks so much for all the great ideas, ladies! I will be referring back to your responses often. I sent you all flowers for sharing, but I just wanted to get back to the "so what happened" section to say thanks, too! With the economy not being in great shape right now, I like to be extra careful with how my money is spent. My husband and I are all for living at our means and not above our lifestyle means. This way, I don't feel guilty when I do purchase something that I might not necessarily need but will make my housework/ home life easier.

LASIK! Best 3k I ever spent! I don't have to fiddle with my glasses in the morning or in the middle of the night. No worrying that my contacts will fall out when I go swimming. I had such a great result that my husband got LASIK six months after I did. He can't believe he waited so long. :)

my robot vacuum cleaner.
But the best one of all, getting out of real estate and renting. So far we've saved a couple hundered thousand there. Unless you own outright, we all rent anyways right? Except my landlord fixes the boaken stuff.

A sofa bed for guests. A lot less work than the Aerobed and it doesn't ever get holes and deflate in the middle of the night like the Aerobed did to my in-laws.

A new dishwasher and cooktop. It's nice to have a dishwasher that doesn't mind drying dishes and a gas cooktop that boils water in less than 20 minutes.

Also, an ongoing way to make life easier: A housecleaning service every two weeks. Worth every dime.

The hubs is an engineer, so he's pretty set on doing things himself. So, when he actually hires someone to do something, you know it's money well spent...
- Hardwoods professionally installed
- Second "HVAC" zone put into our basement so we aren't paying to heat/cool a space that isn't "finished living space", but may be in the near future!
- Larger deck installed professionally

As for what is the best "money spent" to make my life easier... housekeeper. Hands down. I would live on rice if needed to keep her.

My kitchen remodel! Not major or fancy, but replacing the ancient cabinets and shifting things a little makes it a J. to be in the kitchen.

And my murphy bed. We don't have houseguests often, but enough that we needed a comfy bed that could get out of the way for everyday life. the murphy bed in the extra bedroom has been perfect!

Best money ever spent was paying off my house and SUV in full :) NO MORE WORRIES

Here are my most recent budget busters...

1. My two story garage (we do not have a basement) could actually use it
as a house.

2. bought a mulching lawn mower, and gas leaf blower/vacuum....cut
down my yard cutting time to 4 hours a week instead of 6. Might soon
need to purchase a new grass wipe. Can’t wait for fall leaves I AM
READY!

3. screw shooter and impact drill for all my household fixes...don’t have to
listen to others complaining about me borrowing tools!

4. Snow blower-no more back aches...

saving up for a new engery saving "metal" roof....

A few years ago I got a decent sized blow-up pool for the kids for the backyard. It was probably 9'x7' & maybe 24" high & the kids were I'm guessing 7 & 8 years old that summer so it wasn't really big enough for them, but it gave hours & hours of entertainment for around 10 bucks!!

Having a housekeeper come in every other week to clean and having a lawn service take care of our lawn maintenance weekly. It is worth the money we spend each month to not have to do it since we both work long hours.

Oh and thanks, Michelle A - how could I have forgotten the snow blower? BEST investment ever for our Chicago winters, especially with the doozy we had this year.
