What Size After Size 8 for Daughter?

I'm having an odd problem with clothing sizes. My daugther - who is of pretty average size is growing out of her size 8 pants/shorts - (she will be 9 next month so I expected this of course). Her pants are too short by quite a bit and are a tad bit tight on the rear. Problem is 10s or 10/12s are enormous on her. I realize this is where we go to 8,10,12,14 - but does anyone know of any place that sells 9s for children - or that makes a smaller size 10? She is not shaped so that 'slim" size 10s really work or "plus" size 8s - I know this seems ridiculous - but she looks absurd in tight 8s or huge baggy 10s that she is pulling up all the time. I try to the ones with the adjustable waist - and they stay up and are fine for play - but they look ridiculous and bother her now that she is starting to care (a little) about how things look on her. I'm even having this trouble with leggings. Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the responses - I love this site. In my quest I did find that Gymboree sells Size 9! Yay! They have some cute basic stuff that she can wear. Also - we were able to find some 10 slim shorts at Old Navy and Target's size 8 capris and shorts fit fine - haven't tried Kohl's yet - but I'll look there too. I get loads of help looking at questions and answers on here - so I will tell your for that purpose that 8 Huskys - which someone suggested are actually bigger than 10s and very short - so that's the opposite extreme from what I needed. 10 slims are just the tiniest bit long - so I'm pretty happy spring (and capris and shorts) are on their way. Thanks much for the input - you gals are great!

This happens to me every time my kids go up a size.. they grow out of a size and the next size is too big.. and my kids are 2 and 4.

All I can suggest is childrens place tends to run small. also Target jeans and pants run small. I usually take a pair of pants that she is outgrowing with me shopping and try to find pants that are bigger but not too huge.

Check out Old Navy. They have the standard sizes, but they have different styles for girls just like most brands do for grown women. Different cuts and fits. We've always had good luck there. I'll be honest, they don't last as long as Levi's, but they're pretty cheap, so its really not a big deal.

I am having the same problem with my daughter who is 8. Recently, I bought a pair of jeans a Kohls, The Kohls brand come in long and they fit in the rear pretty good. Also, Justice jeans tend to run small but long. A friend suggested that I try the Gap, they fit by waist and length.
What a pain. Good Luck1

If you have outlets near you and they have a Levi's store try them , they have 9's 11's etc , plus they also do them in junior size so they are a little smaller.

I have the same problem with my 9-year-old daughter. We ended up finding some at Target and TJ Maxx. A lot of the problem is that all of the brands are made differently. A size 10 isn't the same size in different brands, which is so frustrating. We just basically had to try on every different brand and style until we found some that fit right. Good luck.

Old Navy and Jc Penny and even target sometimes have Slim sizes with the adjustable waist. I have the same problem with my girls. They are very thin with long legs.

The slim is the best around the waist and it's longer in the legs.

sometimes, you have to shop around a lot to find a clothing designer (needn't be expensive) who perhaps does smaller sizes.. so that a 10 might then fit your child. however, IF you cannot.. do what I do in my child's case.. I have to buy larger pants and ALWAYS need to have them hemmed a bit.. it's just how it's been since my child was little... you can also buy for example... a SLIM 10... sometimes going slim will also help with the baggy aspect..
best of luck

There is no such thing as a size 9 for children.

Casual Children's sizes are usually:
XS-size 4-5
Sm-size 6-7
Med-size 8-10
Lg-size 12-14
XLG-16, or the same as an adult Xsm.

They come in Slims, Regulars, and Husky sizes too, for example 8 husky or 6 slim..

Dressier clothes tend to be even sizes. At stores like Penney's the dresses will be 4, 6 or 6X, 8, 10, 12, 14, etc...but coordinates that are casual will be like the sizes above.

In Womens clothing the sizes used to be:

4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, etc...
and
3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, etc...

Womens sizes were the evens and junior sizes were the odds. Women have usually had children and have wider hips, smaller waists, more shapely figures.

Juniors were usually high school students and college students who were straighter body types, less hiney and stomach left over from pregnancy, and more straight up and down. Much less curvy body types.

Childrens clothes don't have those sizes. You are going to have to go with an 8 Husky.

I hope for your daughter sake, you take my advise. Visit Latino owned stores and you will find clothes that will fit her, and look like any other items her classmates are wearing. I recently tagged on while a co-worker shopped for her daughter, same age, and same problem as your daughter. I was amazed on how her concern was more about not having a Macy, L&T, Gap price tag and bag;rather than, her child's comfort. Her response to this was "We live in Bethesda, would you have your child in anything less then the best". I responded by promising her I would pay for any item she finds that fits,if she would allow me to purchase an outfit that will fit her daughter's curve without it being a size 10(because her child's body is not the typical tall, trim, and looking like everyones twin at "W" middle school, doesnt make her fat). She accepted believing that my last name alone would speak for itself. I traveled to DC (red line), PG, and U street. Suffice to say that her daughter "loves my picking because of its fitting (in every aspect of the word). For some reason the items in African American and Latino owned stores are more correct to the average pre-teen/teen built then Friendship Heights, White Flint, Potomac, etc..etc...
