What Lotion to Use on a 5 Month Old with Dry Patches Possible Eczema?

I have yet to use any lotion on my 5 month old daughter and recently she's developed these dry spots on her legs only and then they turned pinkish. I also found a couple on her arms but much smaller than the ones on the legs. We saw the dr last week who said it might be eczema and recommended that I start using mosturizing lotion on her daily and bathe her in Aveeno bath oil. I bought the Aveeno thing and Cetaphyl mosturizing lotion (dr recommended) but as soon as i started to use those two things she developed this red bumpy rash on her chest/body! I dont know if its a coinsidence or an allergic reaction to the lotion or the bath.. Anyone elses baby out there allergic to Cetaphyl and Aveeno stuff? I'm thinking maybe she needs something oil free, not just fragrance free.. I'm going to let the dr know of this on Monday and will not apply it again, but what do you moms use on your babies? Anything out there oil free and mosturizing and good for them?

What can I do next?

Melaleuca sells a lotion called "renew lotion" that is made from Melaleuca (tea tree oil) and has been great for customers with Eczema, they also sell cleaning products and detergeants that are made from Melaleuca which may also be a part of the problem. If you want more info e-mail me at ____@____.com or visit www.melaleuca.com
Best of luck!

I use Dove bar soap to bathe my son and Eucerin lotion every night. When he does get a dry patch, I use Aquaphor on it and it clears right up. These are also Dr. recommended. I also think he has eczema.

Hi there,
I used olive oil on my baby. When it got really bad, I used a teensy bit of Aquaphor which is thicker.
Check out the Environmental Working Group online. They have a tab called Skin Deep and you can find lotions listed that are safe for baby. There are many baby products out there that contain harmful ingredients.
I also second the mama who started ingesting flax seed oil (or you can just rub the oil on baby).

Both my son & I have extremely sensitive skin & he gets severe eczema. For my son, nothing has worked except this stuff. My mom had bought me some homemade lotion at a dayspa in Idaho a few years ago & I found another jar when she was moving. I used it on my son & I'm not kidding the eczema dissappeared. I called the lady who makes it, to order more. It is $15 per jar & I ordered 8 jars. Nothing has worked on him so far, but this stuff worked like a miracle.

It is called Grandma M's Homemade Lotion. The owner (Christina) was thinking of not staying in business so she shut down her website, but she has been getting calls from people who have used her stuff begging her not to quit. She is in Idaho. Her number is ###-###-####.

I keep promoting her here because it has been amazing for our family.

Hi L.,

My son suffered from eczema and "contact dermatitis". He was very allergic to caustic ingredients, including most laundry detergents and a cheap preservative called Quaternium-15. Sadly, it is in most J&J baby products and many other popular names out there. So please check your bottles and if your product has it in it....please stop using it! You can check out this website to see what types of products have it. There are even pics to show you what it can do to the skin, it may be just what your precious daughter has.
http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/quaternium-allergy.html

I was also introduced to Melaleuca ~ The Wellness Company, and I can honestly say that a combination of their products have help clear up my son's skin condition with in about 6-7 weeks. Completely gone! We had suffered through cortizone creams (steroids) presciption ointments and I just didn't feel comfortable putting strong oinments on his baby skin. I tried a lot of OTC lotions too.

I've learned so much! Our skin is like a sponge, so anything it comes in contact with can cause "contact dermatitis" in some individuals. Including laundry detergents, shampoos, body wash, lotion, perfume, cleaning supplies and floor cleaners that your baby may walk or crawl around. I was able to replace all these types of items and more with Melaleuca.

www.SaferIsBetter.com/LisaZ and you can even get some free products when you order, I did!!

:) Hope this is helpful information for you!

Something I've used is Arbonne ABC Baby lotion. Their diaper cream is great too. It's botanically based and I know people have used it on their children with eczema. I used it on my son's dry cheeks and it was amazing. Also it doesn't cause rashes on other parts of the body. Go to Arbonne.com to order or let me know I can get you in touch with a consultant.

My son had terrible excema for 3 months (4 months to 7 months old). I started using Mustela's STELATOPIA Moisturizing cream and their bath oil and cleanser exclusively on him during baths- it's gone! The stuff isn't cheap, but it does last a surprisingly long time- BabysRus is the only place I know of that you can get the Stelatopia Mustela products for excema prone or dry skin. Good luck.

Hi L.,

When my daughter had that, I added flax oil to my diet (when breatfeeding) and to hers when she was eating solids. Also, we used a homeopathic treatment which seemed to cure it from the inside out. I'd recommend seeing a homeopath, like Dr. Feder.

Good luck!

my 7 month old son had the same problem.... we took him to the doctors and they prescribed a steroid cream that i could use.. but the doctor said the key to controlling eczema is moisture... so after a bath we put his stroid cream on(only if its red) and then the aveeno moisturizing lotion thats made for helping eczema... and thats it... so far its seemed to help...

Hi L.,

My daughter had eczema when she was an infant and at our Pedi recommended hydrocortisone cream. We applied that daily and also used Arbonne ABC Baby Lotion and Baby Oil. The Arbonne ABC products are the best!! My daughters eczema cleared up right away by just using the baby oil. I became a consultant simply for their baby line. If you'd like to try some, please let me know.

Good luck! Something else we use now is Aquaphor. It works wonders too!!

Hi L.!

I have 3 daughters and my middle one had TERRIBLE eczema when she was younger. Drs. would recommend all kinds of products that had mineral oil and were petroleum based. As you can imagine this caused other reactions and never helped the dryness.

Now my daughter is 9 and when she gets out breaks I use Arbonne baby care products. They are absolutely amazing. All natural, hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, and so gentle yet they actually work.

I was SO impressed with the products, I now work for the company!! I am always passing on the knowledge of these products to new parents and to babies. I still don't know why Drs dont recommend this other than they just haven't heard about it.

My pediatrician is now recommending the whole baby line to his patients.

If you are interested in more info, here is the website www.arbonne.com

You have to order products through a consultant such as myself so let me know if I can help you!

Good Luck ---

I agree with the more natural approach too! My daughter used to get dry patches/redness on her cheeks and arms and once we got rid of all the Johnsons/Aveeno/ETC it went away. We now use California Baby brand (all natural). I used to get it from Whole Foods; but now they sell it at Target too! They have a lotion thats formulated for ecczema prone skin that is wonderful! I even use it on my face in the winter when it gets dry.

P.S. Switching to a fragrance free laundry soap and fabric softener was also a big help too. Dreft alone is pretty scratchy and the frangrace in fabric softener would make her break out too.

I have two girls with extraordinarily sensitive skin. Aveeno actually makes a baby wash and lotion for eczema. I have never used any oil on them...I imagine that is what gave your daughter that reaction. Every time I tried to use something different, my girls got that same rash you described as a reaction. Good luck.
