What Is Your Take on the Viacom/DirecTV Dispute?

I am pretty peeved with Viacom!

My kids do not have the TV on all day, but when they do, it's typically some of the Nickelodeon channels. My 9 year old likes to wake up and watch Full House - gone. My boys love to watch Power Rangers - gone.

I can't for the life of me figure out why they want $30billion MORE than what they get now.

Anyone else annoyed by this?

What can I do next?

Okay I guess Direct TV gets some of their programming via Viacom? It usually isn't as huge an increase per customer as they play it out to be.

I can't remember who AT&T was fighting last year but they told everyone call so and so and tell them it isn't fair. Apparently that worked and so and so backed off. If they hadn't they would have pulled the programming and then we would call them complaining that we miss it. Then they would have paid the difference and charged it back to us saying well you asked for it this is what it costs.

Very annoying.

I don't know who is to blame here... Sure, Viacom wants more than what they are getting... inflation affects their company too...

As far as the amount, a little over $1 billion (not 30... they want a 30% increase) may sound like a lot, but when you consider how many customers it is spread out over, it really isn't THAT much more from DirectTV... only a couple of cents per customer daily (which adds up quickly.)

BUT, their rate are dropping (according to the articles I read...) so that increase may NOT be fair...

It sounds to me like they had a communication breakdown somewhere... Both sides CLAIM that they are willing to negotiate while saying that the other won't... How bout we lock them in a room together and make them play nice until they find a compromise?

ETA... I don't have DTV, BUT I do think that DTV customers should receive a discount on their bill until these issues are resolved... after all, you are PAYING for these channels, but not getting them... Wonder if that's going to happen?

Hi, Mom:

You answered your own question. It is basically a strike. The want more MONEY. If parents raise enough havoc, they wil get the money they want.
Learn to live without it. The children need to be learning to love doing things with parents, friends and neighbors, rather than loving TV programs.

Money is ruling our America.
Don't be the one who supports greed.

Good luck.

I am sooooo annoyed. The primary reason I had the package we did was because of the Nick channels. Oh well, guess I can switch to a cheaper package now.

Something similar going on here in the Kansas City area with ABC and Time Warner Cable. I watch very little TV. And I mean VERY LITTLE. But my one guilty pleasure is The View. As of yesterday, we have no ABC programming because of the same thing.

Where we live, we don't have a lot of tv options.
If there's a series we like, we buy it on DVD and watch it that way.
Viacom and DirecTV can duke it out amongst themselves.
They don't get any money from us anyway.
