What Is the Tooth Fairy Leaving Under Pillows These Days?

Our 5 year old is very excited about her wiggly incisor. I'm thinking we've got about a week before she loses it. However if she can work it out I'm sure it will be gone much sooner. I was wondering if anyone could share their family's tooth fairy traditions. I really don't know what the going rate for a tooth is in 2009. Do any of you have any creative ways to celebrate this milestone? Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

We leave a 50 cent piece -- it's one coin -- it's different -- and not many other kids have them or have seen them!

My parents used to have the Tooth Fairy leave us "fun" money, like $2 bills or silver dollars. We thought it was so magical because no one else used $2 bills or silver dollars. It also helped keep the cost down. You can get "funny" money at most banks.

We give a $1 coin. We have a tooth fairy doll, which has a small pocket. My daughter leaves her tooth in the pocket & in the AM the tooth fairy has left a $1 coin.

She has been very happy with this.

My daughter had to have a tooth pulled & the tooth fairy gave her $5 for that, but left a note explaining that the $5 was only for the tooth that was pulled.

My son didn't start losing teeth til he was eight so our situation was a little different. We started with a $10 and leave a $5 for every subsequent tooth. he still has to follow our budgeting structure and techniques, however - it's not fun money that he can throw away. 10% goes to God, 10% goes to savings, then the rest he can bank to save towards the goal of the month....an electric guitar, accessories, bakugon stuff, slip n slide.... and since he's that old, there's no illusion that a fantasy fairy actually is leaving it, but we still try to encourage him to play along with us, even when he insists,"Moooooooooommmmmm! I KNOW it's just you!" :)

my advice would be: decide with your husband what you want to teach with this tool, make your own decisions about what's good and appropriate for your family, and give according to those goals. And have fun! ;-D

God bles!

My friend had a really creative way for her daughters. She would get a "tooth box" to put the tooth in at night, you can buy them or get a small box and decorate it yourself. Then when the tooth fairy came at night she would leave some feathers, either in the lid of the box or around it or some on the floor. When the girls got up and found the feathers and the tooth gone they were just so excited. Just something that I thought was really a fun idea.

at that age, 1.00 bill is still the most appropriate. Exciting to them, and not setting them up to want more, more, more!!

I always leave a gold dollar under the pillow. Some kids get $20 per tooth but I think that is way too much. My son seems to be excited over the gold dollars as much as he would be for a $20. You should be able to get these at any bank. Luckily, my dry cleaners gives them for every $10 that you spend so I have a purse full of them.

Check out my website www.mykidslaundry.com I sell tooth fairy pillows for $5.00. My husband still has his tooth fairy pillow from when he was a kid (30 years ago). Our kids hang their pillows on the bed posts so that the tooth fairy can get to it quicker (no searching under the pillow). We have a little saying that we sing while we hang up the pillow (comes with the pillow). Our family going rate is $1.00 a tooth. Good luck and have fun.

First, congrats on this milestone. Secondly, I do believe that we need to not worry about what everyone else gets. lastly, I do believe in starting something relatively small but special. my parents gave my brother a silver dollar, but they are likely no longer available for $1 now. One idea, since you do have a daughter, is that you can start a charm bracelet. The "Italian" ones have reasonably priced charms and you put the square links together and "build" it. You can get many charms at places at the mall like Claire's, often on-sale. Or if you prefer, maybe check the price of silver ones. Good luck.

Tabitha the toothfairy would come to visit our house when our children would loose a tooth. The first time she left an introduction letter and although it made a little mess, some loose iridescent glitter was also in the letter, along with a gold dollar. She would get her tooth to builder her tooth castle in the toothfairy world. My kids decorated a little wooden decorated treasure box that we purchased from AC moore or Micheals, can't remember where we bought it, any ways the tooth was left in the box and the next morning, traded for the gold dollar. We still have the gold dollars. They NEVER complained about it being only a dollar or not spending it, it was just cool to get the gold coin. We would even write letters to the tooth fairy, she would often speak of the cavity creature she would have to defend her castle against to help incourage our kids to take care of their teeth so they would be strong for her castle. Yeah, we proably went over board, but now my kids are 14 and 15 and still speak of Tabitha the Toothfairy with great memory. We look forward to starting the tradtion again with our younger 2 and 3 year olds in a few years.

We've been leaving $1 for our 6 year old. Though, recently he had two wiggly ones at once, and upon discussing it at school with his classmates, he decided that more was in order for two teeth, so I think we actually gave him $4 that time, as he did lose both (with some help on his part) the same day.

Some people lavish their children with all the latest expensive toys and high priced entertainment, and I'm sure they tend to leave more than I do. My kids appreciate what they get, as they aren't lavished upon.

Some of my friends are giving $5-$10 per tooth but I personally think that is ridiculous. I like to do things old fashioned and so that they mean more. I would suggest either giving $1 for each tooth and $1 more for each tooth...ie $1 for the first $2 for the 2nd $3 for the 3rd, etc

Or, what we plan on doing when that day comes is giving them a $2 bill for each tooth that is a molar and each regular tooth will receive a .50 cent piece or a one dollar coin. Making it something different and more special. I used to get .50 pieces and I have kept them all from my childhood and plan to give our kids those and make them save them.

Have fun!

I haven't read the other responses - but for the first tooth the tooth fairy left a note written on a piece of paper I cut out shaped like a tooth (congrats on losing your first tooth....) and a $2. Each additional tooth we've done a $2 bill (I got a bunch from the bank and keep one in my wallet (we lost a tooth out of town once) and then at home.

The going rate seems to be all over the place :)

My son got $5 for his first tooth because unfortunately, he lost his tooth right before bed and that was the smallest bill the tooth fairy had on her that night. I would have prefered to leave $1. Now I leave $5 for every tooth and the deal with the tooth fairy is that he can't spend money from her on anything that damages teeth - no soda, candy, etc. He usually saves it instead, but he is free to spend it on a toy or book or movie that he saves up for. The tooth fairy also started leaving a new toothbrush along with the money for lost teeth.

bac in January, there was a mom not wanting to just leave money, she wanted to do something else. (She also had a thing against witches, fairies, etc, so wanted ideas that did not incorporate them as well). There were a ton of creative ideas from mamasource moms. Here is the link to that post to give you some other ideas. http://www.mamasource.com/request/10644654307141484545

My six year old just lost a tooth yesterday- we pulled it out and then he lost it but I was able to find it. Anyway, the tooth fairy left him $5 and a red wooden heart with the date on it. He was thrilled, but my two older children are miffed because they only got $1 for their first tooth! I had to chase the 6 year old around and hold him tightly while my husband pulled the tooth out - it was worth it to promise him $5 but now I'm paying for it with the other two. And we still have two more to go to lose teeth! I think $5 for the first tooth and then $1 for the rest is reasonable but do try and keep it consistent for all your children! Good luck!

PS I put the box with the tooth in it under my pillow so it wouldn't be lost again. Good thing the tooth fairy didn't wake me up!

How exciting to have your first child loose a tooth. My advice...do not worry about the "going rate" of a tooth because I have heard everything from some change to twenty dollars. Do what you feel is best. Some traditions: make a cute container to hold this special tooth and it also makes it easier for the tooth fairy to find it. You can work together using felt, hot glue, glitter, and anything else to make it special. Let you imagination fly. There is also a great child's book, "The Real Tooth Fairy" that you can give to your daughter. It is a delightful story about how the tooth fairy may look like someone she knows. Have fun.

My daughter is almost 5 1/2 and is super excited about her two wiggly bottom teeth, too! I have a letter printed out and ready from the Tooth Fairy. A letter that is special for the first tooth. I think the Tooth Fairy will be leaving a little gold pouch that will have a couple gold dollar coins and some gold glitter inside it. =0) I also found the cutest thing online at www.babytoothalbum.com. It's a baby teeth organizer/keepsake where you can keep them and note the date for each one lost. I went ahead and ordered two of them (I have a 3yr old son as well). Of course, these will have to stay hidden for many years. ;0) Good luck and have fun! I think I'm just as excited as she is!!!
