What Is That Smell?

Ok moms I hope someone can help me---The other day I went in my daughters room (her door was shut all day) and it smelled soooooo bad kind of like urine. So I searched the carpet(I have 2 dogs and 2 cats) and found a little yellow spot and smelled it. It was urine. I scrubbed it and today we rented a carpet cleaner to clean it better. The smell will not go away. I cant find anymore spots and I am freaking out because the attic door is in her closet. I have never heard anything walking around in the attic or smelled dead wild life. Has anyone had something dead in their attic? Does it smell up the whole house or just the room your attic door is in? Can the cat urine be still that strong of a smell after cleaning it? Please help!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Ok thank you!!! At least nobody said it could be a dead animal in my attic. I feel a lot better knowing it is just cat pee. The smell did go away a lot since the carpet dried and yes hardwood is in our future. Thanks again and I knew I could count on you moms once again

Hi. Its possible that it could be the animals and yes cat urine is very hard to get rid of. Did you try spot shot or resolve?

If it is in the padding below you may need to pull up the carpet in the area and make sure to treat the area below. Or get a professional to come in. Make sure also to get product just for cleaning urine.
Cats are why we put down hard wood floors in our new house. No more hairy carpets or accidents on the carpet. Once we moved to this house there has never been an accident because hard wood floors do not hold odors and think that is why cats sometimes use the carpet for a litter box.

Good Luck

I believe cat urine can stay behind after you clean it up.
You will want to go get a pet urine spray from the store.

I learned the hard way that once you use hot water on the smell you have set it in. I had a similar problem with my dog and when I researched products to get the smell out they advise you not to use hot water.

I use Kids and Pets on urine stains. It works very well. You can buy it at Target and Jewel.

Good Luck!

we had a big problem with cat pee, and it does smell horrible! regular cleaning doesn't work on it, and if you can smell it, so can they, and they'll do it again in the same area. you can get special cat urine cleansers at the pet store (nature's miracle works really well) and i recommend a black light as well to see if you got it all. the light will turn urine florescent yellow. the only thing is that it probably soaked it down to the carpet pad which you won't see. pour the solution on and let it dry naturally for a day or two. make sure you use enough of it to soak all the way through! i know how awful it is- good luck!!

Sounds like cat pee to me! The only thing I found that worked on getting rid of the smell was -- hardwood floors. Sorry to say, but I tried EVERYTHING (Nature's Miracle, Scope, baking soda, Tide - you name it I tried it) and nothing worked. One thing that did help a little was when we had a professional come in and he injected the carpet and pad with this huge syringe of de-smeller. It helped a bit. The problem is the kitty probably is continuing to go in there somewhere. You should have your vet check to make sure your cats don't have a urinary tract infection or that they aren't "blocked," which means they can barely urinate because the infection has become so bad. This also makes the urine smell worse because it is concentrated. Cats with infections try to pee where someone will notice, I think, because they are in pain. I had a blocked cat pee in a sink in the bathroom in front of me and I knew that couldn't be right! Sure enough, he had a horrible infection. Good luck with everything. I know how bad that smell can be.
