What Is Hateful?

Sorry if this ends up not making sense but our Cardinals didn't seem to understand I had to be in work early.... :(

The question really is what is hateful?

Say someone says that our planet will self destruct if we don't contain CO2 emissions. Someone replies that we have been on a course of global warming for centuries and the pattern doesn't correlate with increases and decreases in CO2 emissions. ( I am making this stuff up, I hug my trees but I do not follow the global warming debate)

Is the reply at face value hateful?

Now say the OP was formed by someone who has been fighting to lower CO2 emissions for years and takes that reply as a personal attack?

Is the reply hateful?

I guess another question would be should people be held accountable for their statements being considered hateful when that was not their intent? How could we ever judge intent? Is there even a way to negate this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Oh thanks guys, I now have the words to gettn' jiggy wit it playing in my head! "no love for the haters the haters, mad cause I got floor seats for the Lakers" Yeah lets see how long it takes to get that out of my head!!!!

I think what makes something hateful depends on two things.

1. Delivery. If someone says, "I disagree because...." that's just a difference of opinion and isn't hateful, just different. Then, if feelings are hurt it's the fault of the hurt party. If someone says, "Are you serious??? How could you possibly think that.....? That's just stupid." Well, now that's hateful. It isn't about a difference of opinion, it's about making someone else feel small for thinking differently. The hurt feelings are the fault of the other party.

2. Content. Any kind of prejudice or slanderous comment against any group of people based on how they look, what they believe, who they love, where they live. Basically, anything that attacks at the WORTH of another person based on these things. We can believe someone is wrong in their choice, we can't make them feel less than. That's hateful. Any statement made solely to hurt or harm another is hateful.

it's their perception, J.. Some people EXPECT others to simply follow them and believe as they do...and when they encounter people who do not follow them or believe as they do - they are "haters"....

I do not believe the response was "hateful" it was well-formed and thought out. The one who takes it as a personal attack is the one who is expects people to follow them and believe them.

As to global warming? Don't believe it. The earth goes in cycles, just like our lives...it has seen an Ice Age and much more...while we need to be responsible with our planet - there are some things you just can't change and cycles are one of those things you just can't change.

I think it's hateful for people to keep reporting others with an opposing view

A response based on fact or belief if delivered respectfully is not hateful. However, if there is an issue that you know in your heart of hearts is a fire starter with someone, it is their passion and you know they hold this belief close to their own identy and you object to or "discredit" it with your statement. Yeah. I bet they think you are hateful.
It is at these moments if you do not feel the same level of passion for an issue, to clam up or if you do have the same level of interest simply share "Sally, I know how you feel about CO2 Emissions, but I have differing views - so let's agree to disagree and talk about another subject."
I guess it comes down to they eye of the beholder and if a person feels they were slighted - they were. . .you can choose to discuss it with them to see mutual understanding or let it go.

If it is malice behind the reply than I would think it is hateful, how do I determine malice? I consider the source most times that is the key for me.

I don't think you can judge "perception" and we all see things with our own personal filter.
