What Has Been Your Experience with Singulair?

I heard that it can trigger mental issues in children. I have a history of mental illness in my family and am petrified of triggering a latent gene in my son but his allergies are forcing my hand. Please tell me if you've used on your children what side effects have been like. Did it help the allergies?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My now 14 yr old daughter has more or less taken Singulair since she was about 3 or 4 years old. She takes it year round and it really help with her many environmental allergies. All I can tell you is that I've not seen any negative side effects from this. Her allergist did explain that we should watch for any changes in personality. I have a very pleasant and, for the most part, stable teenager. If anything, she's much more positive and compliant than most others her age - lol. She doesn't even have an attitude. Maybe the Singulair helps? Best of luck.

I have used Singulair and it made a world of difference. Help me get things under control. The problem I had was the expense so I ended up weaning myself off it.

My now 6.5 year old has been on it for 2 years. It has been a great thing for us. Her allergies are so severe that she takes Zyrtec in the morning and Singulair at night (Singulair should be used at night because it works better at night due to the way your body metabolizes at night). We occassionally also have to use nasal spray and eye drops too (rarely) but without the other daily meds for more than two days she is SICK.

We have experienced NO side effects at all.

My daughter has been taking it since she was two and had never had any bad reactions to it at all. It has helped her so much. It has been a lifesaver.

What about very small doses of Benadryl throughout the day instead?

What mental issues does Singulair trigger? My daughter tends to get hyper or extra agitated when she takes Zyrtec. I wouldn't think to worry about it triggering mental illness, which runs in my family.

It would be a real pain in the butt for you, but you could also try eliminating gluten from your son's diet. Once I removed gluten from my diet, my seasonal allergies miraculously went away. They always come back when I cheat and eat pizza or pastries. It does nothing to help with my food allergies though.

I have used it recently. Last year I diagnosed finally after many years as asthmatic. I had to wean myself off the drug after seven months. My stomach became an issue and I began to have self doubts about myself in daily life. A call was placed to my doctor to get a different drug. All was well until I got my flu shot and I took a pill last night which helped greatly. So I will only now use the drug when I have the beginnings of a serious allergy attack.

Check the dosage level as it comes in different strengths.

Good luck to you.

Was great stuff for allergies/mild asthma. But it increased my child's tics so much we had to quit it. My H takes it with no problem.

My son (now age 17) has been taking it for years, probably at least 10. He has not experienced any mental issues, and it has helped him so much with his asthma and allergies. No problems here.

My son took it for a few weeks when he was 7. He started having stomach aches a half hour after taking it nightly. We stopped.

At age 11, he had double pneumonia, then a few months after that, developed exercise induced asthma. After that, we started him on allergy shots. He is 3 years into it and nearly a year ago he was able to mostly discontinue all medications for his allergies (except the maintenance shots). He had been taking OTC allergy meds (Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin, etc) for years. Daily. With little to no relief eventually.
Now, he takes nothing, unless something flares, and then he pops a zyrtec for a day or two, and he's good.
No more sneezing, post-nasal drip, used tissues every.where., and no more wrinkled nose from sniffling all the time. And he sleeps SOOOO much better.

My nephew used it for a while when he was about 5 years old, but he developed night terrors and anxiety so my sister took him off of it.
