What Do I Really Need for a Second Baby?

Prior to being on bed rest I did not want a second baby shower. I was so fortunate to receive so many gifts the first time around! Being on bed rest really changed my mind. I am marking the days until this shower which will happen after I pass 32 weeks, and my doctor has given me permission to attend and sit up at the party! I was asked to create a registry and I tried to. I didn't want people spending their hard earned money when I have so much from when my son was born two years ago.I am mainly just wanting to celebrate the friendships and support that helped me get this far along in my pregnancy. But the ladies have expressed their desire to ooh and awe over cute kiddie stuff, and I see that. So I registered for diapers and a few parts to my breastpump. I have already been given hand me downs (clothes and a double stroller) but I tried to add a few clothing items such as socks or sleepers since this baby is a girl. What else would be needed for a mom with an infant and a two year old? Any slings or wraps that would allow a woman under five feet to nurse hands free?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you! So many great ideas, and I had fun researching the suggested wraps and carriers. I spent a very happy morning putting together a registry that I am proud of. Most of all, your responses helped me stay occupied and engaged. Thank you!!!!!!

Girl bedding and all the little things like clothes for ages up to 1yr or even 2 yrs., blankets, pacifiers, storage bags for milk, diapers, anything that needs replacing since you have been using then for 2 yrs, bottles, bath wash, diaper rash ointments, gas drops, toys, housecleaning service (that would be awsome), new diaper bags, tooth brush, etc.

Ask for older clothes, 6, 12, 18, 24 mo clothes since she can't wear her brothers. Just as cute (for the ooh and ahh factor) and maybe a little bit more helpful than baby stuff.

I had three boys and a girl. With my second and third boy, I asked for diapers, breast pump stuff, a few new clothes when old ones wore out. Just stuff to add to what I already had that I needed. With my girl, it was like I'd never had kids. My shower was a surprise, so I didn't know I was getting anything. But my friends felt I should get new clothes and bows and girly things. Beyond what you've already asked for, you should request a couple things for your older child. Each of mine got a small toy, book or puzzle at my showers. It helps them to not feel left out, especially when they are still toddlers. I can't recommend a sling, I never used one. I had a Graco baby carrier that held the baby to my chest. I am 5'8" though. I never had any problems with it, but I guess they've fallen out of favor. My MIL had a sling and I think she liked it, but I don't know what brand it was. (her baby was only 3 when I married to her son)

My friends wanted to have a second for me as well. I didn't want my hostess to put show...so she put sprinkle. A term used for a second one:) And she had politely put gift cards are great idea. I got lots of gift card & it was great! I had everything I needed, but needed double stroller, new diaper bag, and a few other things....so it worked out well.

As for nursing in a carrier, my Moby was difficult to use- the girls always "jack-knifed" in it, but it is possible to make it work. The Ergo is good once they're a bit older- they sit up & nurse (once you move it lower on your hips).

Congrats on your new baby!

How about asking for a gift of dinner? Maybe your friends could each pick an evening the first few weeks when they would supply food for your family? Or a gift of "hold-the-baby" time so that you can have some one-on-one with your big boy? Or, maybe something that you need for the older one and will be able to pass down to your younger one?

Sorry to hear that you're on bed rest. I did that and it's no fun. Hang in there and good luck!

since you are having a girl, let them buy clothes in all diff sizes, up to 2and 3T. Also if you don't have one already, you have to have a Boppy pillow! and a contoured changing table pad. beautiful new blankets sheets and towels for the new baby are always nice...enjoy the pampering! Also, another thought is just that...rather than a gift for the baby....a pampering gift like Gift Certificates for pedicure, massage, a coupon for some babysitting for an hour, pampering gifts for you, the soon to be mom of 2! Happy mothering...from the mom of four girls and a late arriving boy!

When I had my first son my one daughter was 15 mo old and when I had my 2nd son my 1st son was 2 yrs and 1 week old. I had 2 in cribs at a time... so I did need another crib, but I was given one as a hand me down. I also loved my double stroller (but see you already have one). The other things I needed was a new highchair cause my others still used them (we had 3 highchairs at the table for a while), a new car seat (even if you have a newborn one - you will need a bigger one soon, but you can wait & ask for it for Christmas if you want to.)

Mainly with the younger ones I just asked for the everyday stuff - diapers (all sizes - not just newborn or 1's), bath supplies, diaper cream/vasiline, laundry soap, diaper wipes, new nipples (eventhough I nurse) & nukes (some babies use them some don't), a few new sheets & blankets (more so if your 2 yr old is still in a crib or a toddler bed) and a few outfits cause even on my 5th I want something that is just this babies. Something else - I know it's not very personnal, but gift cards for the grocery store, Wal-mart & Target so you can get anything you find you need after the baby gets here or for local resurants that have carry-out so you don't have to cook as much when you first come home.

Also, I have seen where moms are having "sprinkles" instead of "showers" for 2nd, 3rd or 4th kids - I guess a "sprinkles" is a party where they bring homemade frozen meals that you can just pull out of the freezer, heat & eat it. Which would be a huge help when you come home from the hospital & have to tend to a newborn & a 2 yr old.

Congratz on the new baby & the 2 yr old. I hope things get easier for you!! I'm sure your are getting tired of being in bed & looking forward to a party w/ friends & family!! I hope everyone you love will be able to make it & you have a really good time!

My friend gave me a Hooter Hider that she was no longer using. It was fabulous for nursing in public.

We had a son and then a daughter - we chose not to find out the gender either time, so we really couldn't help people who wanted to provide gifts before she was born.

Honestly, a lot of things we thought were SO important the first time around never got used, so I think you're on the right track. Almost inevitably (first baby or 2nd), I put together a gift basket of toiletries that I know they're going to need - baby soap, safety swabs, infant tylenol, etc etc etc.

Good luck! Hope you enjoy the shower and make it to week 40!

The Ergo is a great carrier for a bit later on and the Beco Butterfly is supposed to be good. You can get a moby wrap or a ring sling...these are good for shorter users.

The only items I bought for baby #2 was a new carrier, some Baby Legs, a boppy (or the brest friend pillow), and a new sleep positioner. Otherwise we had it all from baby #1.

Register for a few new bottles and sippy cups. They are pricey and tend to age. The Safe Sippy cup is a nice one. Or a set of eco-friendly dishes, bamboo maybe?

Good luck and congratulations!

I just went to a shower for a friend with a similar question. She has 2 boys and is expecting a little girl so she didn't need much. The woman who hosted the shower had us get the baby a sleeper or tee shirt and write on it in fabric marker a "wish" we had for the baby and Mom at the shower. We got to use the fabric markers to create little "outfits" for the new arrival and it was a lot of fun for us to sit around and help each other.

She registered for baby clothes, but in bigger sizes for later. She had plenty of hand me downs for the baby as an infant so the next sizes up helped get ready for the future and gave us the chance to oooh and ahhhhh.

Hope this helps.

I just had my second and now have a two year old and a two month old. The only things I've purchased so far have been a pack n play (didn't have one with my first), clothes (they're off by a season), toiletries, new bottle nipples and pacifiers, and closet organization gear (I like the Koala Baby gear at BRU).

Since your first was a boy, everyone will want to get you cute girlie things such as clothes and hairbows. Although you may have items you could use from your first, perhaps you'd want some girly blankets, burp cloths, baby bedding and decor?

Other items you could add:
*Baby shampoo, lotions, diapering creams?
*A booster seat for your 2 yo since your infant will take the high chair?
*New diaper bag, unless the one you have will work for two?
*Toys or other fun things you might have wanted but not gotten for your first?

Congratulations and good luck!

Oh, and I have a Moby wrap and an Ergo both of which I love. I nursed my baby hands free in the Moby. It's also doable with the Ergo but I haven't tried.

* My Maya Wrap is something I can't live without.

* A subscription to Mothering Magazine or your favorite parenting, family health, wellness magazine.

* Gift cards for local restaurants so that you have meals for after the baby arrives(along the lines of a casserole themed shower where the guests bring a dish to freeze).

* A post-partum doula to help with childcare & light housework so you can rest.

* A month or two worth of maid service for bathrooms, floors and floor boards to be cleaned, dusted & mopped.

* You may also find that A Mother Blessing is what you're feeling the need to do. http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/blessingway/a/aa102202a.htm

Unless the diaper bag you had with your son is huge i suggest registering for a new one. My kids are a lot closer than yours so i had to carry more stuff im sure but i had to buy a huge diaper bag (mine are only 11 months apart).
