What Color to Paint a Room???

Hi Moms,

Our daughter just picked out a black and white bedspread to go in her "new" room. (It's technically white with a pattern of black flowers, stems, and vines all over it.) WHAT COLOR SHOULD I PAINT THE WALLS???? I was originally planning on painting them yellow but now I have NO idea!

Anyone know what will look good???

I also ran the suggestion past my husband of painting 3 walls white and 1 wall black but he had no idea if that would look okay either...

ADDITION:

Sorry, she is almost 6 years old.

She wanted a "princess" room. However, my husband was NOT going to spend $50 on just the comforter. So she choose this comforter, sheet, pillow case, etc. set.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone!

We ended up going with 3 sunshine yellow walls (nice but not too bright) and one dark pink (almost a tint of purple too) color. I think it looks really nice! And our daughter loves it. Thanks for all the help! Made painting not so scary this time......LOL.

PS> I've had some bad experiences.... I tried to paint our kitchen/dining room a burnt orange and it turned out PUMPKIN orange! So I am always hesitant to pick a new color now.

A friend of mine did her daughter's room in black & white too. She painted three walls white, and one black. The black wall was the smallest one so the color is not too much for the room. Anything hung on the walls is framed in opposite colors. The white walls have black frames, the black walls have white frames.
To add color to the room she used rugs and throw pillows in bright colors. She has hot pink, lime green, bright yellow, and electric blue pillows. There is a large round rug in the middle of the room that is hot pink with brightly colored butterflies on it.
The room looks amazing.
It's really simple to add colors into the room so it is not just black & white. I say just have fun with it. Almost everything matches black and white.

I would go with a half way painted lime green with chair rail and the rest of the wall white along with the ceiling. or I would do if you are creative is paint the walls white with lime green vines or something to match the comforter with crown molding on the ceiling. That sounds older than a 6 year old but it is just what popped in my head.

I am doing my room in black and white, and my accent color is red. I also considered orange and red, hot pink and light pink, lime green and purple, lime green and aqua, orange and yellow, etc. You can pretty much do anything you want. Right now, I'm pulling it all together in the guest room with white furniture, and I love it. I am planning on moving everything into the master bedroom, which has black furniture. That ought to look good, too.

I want to paint just the one wall behind my bed in my accent color. That will make the bedding pop, but not overpower the room. Our master doesn't get a lot of light.

I have made one of these, but want to hang three (two red, one white) from the ceiling. I love love love this idea, and it's so cheap!

I say let your daughter pick two colors that she loves, one for the main color and one for an accent.

My daughters room has a black comforter with white circles. The walls are painted pink and right where her bed is we painted the wall a high gloss black. I then bought fluted moulding and painted it white. The moulding is between the pink and black paint on the wall and basically goes from the floor to ceiling at her headboard. Her furniture is white. I also found crystal lamps with black shades and she has a black area rug with white circles. The room also has mostly hot pink and black accessories. It looks really great if I say so myself. If you are interested I would be glad to send you a few pictures of the partially black wall. Painting a wall black can be a little scary:). I am about to paint the moulding in our study black too so please wish me luck. I am a little nervous but it is only paint.

We did a super light, milky pink (Martha Stewart's Milk Glass Pink) on our 5 yo's walls and her accents are black, creamy white and raspberry. We also painted her closet door w/ black chalkboard paint (so fun) Turned out really pretty and she won't outgrow it anytime soon. Have fun!

That will match anything.

What does your daughter want as for color?

Keep in mind, little girls quickly outgrow, the "Princess" phase.

How old is your daughter?
By the time my daughter was finished with Kindergarten, she was all done with the Princess phase.

I would just spend $$ on Princess accessories, that don't cost a ton.
Small area rug, lamp, removable wall decals, etc.
Check out Walmart online.
Here is their link for "Kids Princess Decor":

Paint it in colors that will grow with your child.
But no, not black and white walls.

I vote for a deeper, more intense version of some of the pastels: hot pink, rich lavender, lime green, or bright light blue, or yes, yellow. These colors can be overwhelming on all 4 walls but would look great on just the one wall behind the bed. I'd ordinarily stay away from black as it's too stark. However, they have black chalkboard paint which could be fun on one wall, especially if your daughter is artistic and would enjoy making her own designs in bright colors on the "black board". As long as it doesn't make a dusty mess on the bed or carpet!

Hot pink will go nicely with white and black. You can get accessories to match too.... there's alot of hot pink things that you can get to decorate her room. Look into craft stores for this stuff.

I vote for lime green. It will make the black & white stuff pop without being too little-girlish. Black & white walls wouldn't look bad if you had really bright accessories throughout the room, but you run the risk of it looking a little plain. Let us know what you decide!

My first thought was green - whatever shade you like best, next was pink.

Black and paint are basic colors that will match almost anything. Purple, light pink, hot pink, lime green, come to mind.
I found a picture with yellow walls and "like" colors, so you can see how they may go together.

My daughter has leopard print everything. Her room is Pepto Bismol pink with gold shimmers in the paint. It looks much nicer than it sounded when she wanted to do it. The shimmers are not over the top, you can see them glisten in the light sometimes.

Shimmers were purchased in the paint dept just for going on the walls.

I like to go to Rate my Space on HGTV.com. You can pick the kind of space you want to see like "girls rooms". I got some great ideas for our twin girls bedroom including the perfect green paint color. Since your daughter wanted a princess room, I would go with pink on the wall(s) and pink in the accessories. Pale pink, watermelon pink, or hot pink would work, IMO. Black goes with everything. Below is a link to a room from Rate my Space with black, white and pink.

I think a deep color would be great. Purple, turquoise, a dramatic blue, emerald green, rose or even a deep pink.......what is your little girls favorite color????? Does she have any painted furniture in the room? Compliment what you have.

I painted my son's room a very dark gray - he also has black and white pillows/bedspread. I was worried it was too dark but trusted the lady in the paint store and it's okay - especially after the stuff was put back in the room. The white woodwork really pops with this. I used light gray & white valances, and black shadow boxes & display cubes. If you don't want to go dark, go for a medium gray. Then use white frames or white display cubes/shelves. He has a white desk and black furniture (we painted it). We added white lamp shades to some old lamps. You could go the other way - do black accessories & white furniture, or a wood finish. Don't be afraid of color! It looks overpowering on a full wall but once you put stuff in there, it's all different!

what's her favorite color? I'm thinking something bright but that's just me... I kind of against painting a wall black, however, I bet it would like nice if you had the bed against that wall, just my opinion... I'm not really a fashion person, I sure which I could see the finish product...I bet it will look beautiful!

I think any color will go with black and white, tho I suggest it be a rich color. ie. no pastels. I wouldn't paint one wall black. It would be very difficult to paint it a light color later.
