What Classes Can I Put My 3 Year Old In?

My little boy just turned 3 and I'd really like to get him into some sort of extracurricular activity to stimulate both his social skills and physical abilities. He is very social and has never had a problem being around other children. He is very smart academically and seems to have a knack for sports. I just don't know what he can do. Most places that I've looked into are "ages 5 and up". I would like him to have something to look foreward to in the week. I would like him to be able to socialize and maybe get a little energy out.

At the YMCA 3 yr olds can play basketball, soccer, and tumbling. They can also go to mommy and me yoga and zumba classes. We've done the soccer and basketball. I don't recommend the basketball for that age because it is crazy loud and kind of overwhelming with everybody yelling in the gym. We've found soccer is way better for little ones. They also like to be in the Y daycare while I work out. They get to do crafts and play games. It's only a couple hours a week, an hour at a time while I excercise. So, it's not like leaving them all day or anything. Just an hour to go play with friends. We love it.

We put our boys in swimming lessons starting at 6 months old. We needed to go in the water with them, but it was really great! They were able to get some energy out, and we were able to learn how to play with them in swimming pools.

We also put our 3 year old in a trampoline and tumbling class. He loved it! Didn't actually follow directions, but he had fun making up his own games.

We went through a local gym and fitness center in each of the towns we lived in. I know that some places have Kindermusik classes. Most of the ones he is eligible for at this age would also have you stay with him the whole time, but it's really fun! And then you can continue the things you learn in class afterwards to get even more energy out!

Gymnastics and dance classes are usually available for 3 year olds. I danced for about 20 years and was a teacher when I was in college. As long as you are just looking for socialization and activity, it's perfect for that age. But don't put a lot of expectation into retention. Most kids don't really remember a lot of the skills from one "year" to the next until they are 5. But I bet he will enjoy it! And dance and tumbling are especially good for boys because they are naturally less flexible than girls so it will help him with any other activities he does as he gets older.

I'd say some sort of mommy & me class you'd find at a rec center or the YMCA. 3 is too young for organized sports which is why most say 5 and up. Do you have a Little Gym or Gymboree type place around you or what about a Mother's Day out class that meets like 2 days a week? We have a lot of churches around us that offer them.

At three we had my daughter in ice skating/hockey, swimming, ballet and tap. This seems like a lot, but we only did one at a time, and it was over the course of a year. There are lots of things to try, you just have to look- and talk to other moms in your area.

YMCA has lots of classes for preschool age kids. Do you have a local Park & Rec dept? Check into their programs. "My Gym" or "The Little Gym" have fun preschool age gymnastics classes. A sports class(teaches a different sport each week), gymnastics, soccer or swimming would all be fun activities for this age.

I see you are in Layton. Off Antelope Dr. (between Famous Dave's and Lowes) is My Gym. It is wonderful! They have classes that start as young as 6 weeks old and my son absolutely loved it! He went for a year before we had our baby and stopped going. We plan on going back soon as he loved the teachers. In addition to your class, you are also able to attend "free play" sessions and they have a Lunch Bunch where you drop them off for an hour or something and they feed them and play as well as Parents' Night Out one Friday a month. If you sign up, let Christine know you were referred by M. and Konner ;). You can go to a class for free and try it out before you sign up. ###-###-#### is their number and http://www.my-gym.com/layton.aspx is their website so you can check it out.
