What Are Your "Staples"?

My girlfriend lost her house to a fire on May 5th this year. it was condemned and she lost EVERYTHING in her master bedroom and most if not all of the stuff in her daughters room (American Girl and Brats dolls!!!)

The construction and rebuilding is done...whew..she was able to find a full furnished home to live in while construction was being done.......now we are going out and replenishing the home with food...and furniture...

but it's been interesting to find out what we "need" in our home......it was a HUGE eye-opener for her...and me - the loss was substantial. The things the insurance adjuster threw out was astonishing...her insurance company has taken great care of her.

So after some of the new furniture was delivered today - we went to the grocery store...

Milk - sugar - bread - spices - flour - brown sugar - peanut butter - syrup - butter - orange juice...

We had two carts filled with stuff - so what do you consider a "staple" in your home? I know we missed a lot of stuff today.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Don't forget stuff for the medicine cabinet. Band aids, a thermometer, tylenol, rubbing alcohol etc.

My son got his first place, I bought him one of those spice racks that you can refill. Figured he can then cook and he can build as he needs. Beyond that it seems like you build as you go.

You need things to clean. You need things to clean yourself.

I could type all day but I would say if you are trying to figure out what you missed you will figure that out when you miss it, ya know?

She should write an email to American Girls. They are the kind of company who would send a new one considering the circumstances.

OMG! That is terrible. Glad to hear they are being taken care of financially with the insurance company. Glad they have you to also help!

When we moved cross country, we gave away/donated almost all of our food - except can goods. Also got rid of all liquid cleaners and such. Ugh. What a lot to replace!

She'll go to the store several times! Sam's club is a great place to go to stock up on stuff and to not make the cupboards so bare.

Our list is so similar to everyone elses...but we also eat a lot of cheese. :)

Does she have a chest freezer? A great investment if she doesn't.

I also agree that a letter to American Girls doll company would be a great idea. Maybe from you? :)

Good luck to her and her daughter, and bless you!

Aw man! That's SO sad. I'm glad you guys were able to help them out - that is VERY kind of you all.

I guess I always get fruits and veggies, beans, rice, pasta, meants, and my dairy stuff (cheese, milk, and OJ - even though I know that's not dairy it's in that section at the store).

Everything else can kind of come as I need it.

I rememeber when I moved out of state and had to start my kitchen supplies all over again. You just don't realize how much stuff is "staples." I always keep tomato sauce/paste, canned tomatos, rice, pasta, packaged seasonings, jelly/jam, ketchup, mayo, mustard, and salad dressing. Can't think of anything else right now. It costs a fortune to start from scratch! Kudos to you for being there for your friend!

Man, that is horrible. That is so nice of you to help her. Maybe you could check into seeing if there is a food bank in your area to help also. They helped us alot when we had to live in a hotel.

Having not had a car for the past week these were my go to items I missed the most:

Eggs
bread (must have toaster)
frozen waffles / syrup
veggie soup (i sometimes make it with chicken stock and a frozen veggie mix)
Tomato soup
worchestire sauce
Pepper (love tons of black pepper)
bananas
cottage cheese
cereal
almond milk
butter
tomatos
balsamic vinegar
potatos
cheese
pasta / sauce
some frozen meals
baked beans
peanut butter
honey / jelly
Salsa !!(chips or bake it with chicken)
Some sort of juice for a little sugar.
Frozen Tyson chicken (plain or the meals)
Veggies (I'll buy frozen if I can't get to the store alot)

It's a very nice thing you are doing and check out a food bank!

I move all the time (or at least I used to, 3 years here is officailly the longest I've ever lived anywhere). A couple of those times I've had to start over from scratch (once because I had to leave everything -full on evac mode-, and once because the ship carrying my stuff sank, and once I didn't lose everything, but it got put in 12mo+ longterm storage by mistake (grr) so I couldn't get my stuff for a year).

BIG HINT:

DO NOT REPLACE SPICES AT THE GROCERY STORE

Instead: go to an Indian Food Store. You can replenish your spices and herbs for 10 cents on the dollar to 50 cents on the dollar. $80 for about 200 items, instead of $200 for 50.

Ditto: http://www.specialtybottle.com/metalcontainers.aspx these are LOVELY spice containers for 30 cents to 60 cents each... instead of $30 for a puny rack of 15.

COSTCO for kitchen gadgets
MACYS "white" or after xmas sales for pots and pans OR restaurant supply
EBAY for Calvin Klein Sheets (for the price of walmart sheets)
IKEA for down comforters & silverware

When I've started over... here are my must haves:

Beds & Bedding
Towels & toiletries
Kitchen (from pans to colanders to peelers to spices to food) ***ONE VERY GOOD KNIFE*** (My favorte knife is about $300. So I replace that one first, then get an equally expensive bread/tomato knife)
Place to sit (either couch or dining set)
Electronics

jalepenos - we always keep a couple on hand
bell pepper - again, we always use them on anything almost
tortillas - we eat tacos at least once a week
hot dogs (keep some on hand when on sale)
hot dog buns
ketchup
mustard
salad dressing
noodles

(funny - your list, b/c in our house, we RARELY ever use bread, peanut butter, syrup, or orange juice.)
