What Age Can You Give Baby Yogurt?

I was just wondering what age can babies start to have yogurt? My daughter is almost 7mos.old and I was thinking of buying Yo Baby yougurt but wasn't sure if I have to wait like you do with whole milk.

Right now Savannah is eating babyfood and it's getting boring are there other foods out there I can give her? She likes to gnaw on cantelope and was thinking of trying some other foods and making our own puree. What did you feed your baby? She's already getting mad and fussy when I eat in front of her and wants me to share but she has no teeth so that's out of the question.

As long as she doesn't have a milk allergy she should be fine with the yobaby my kids loved it. I think I started them on it around 7 or 8 months.

If you walk down the baby isle there are so many finger foods that she could have. I would watch her when you start but my oldest could eat anything without teeth (he didn't get his first tooth until 9 months old)

B., I have read in a book that you are supposed to wait until 9-12 months to give yogurt. However, I always take their advice with a grain of salt. :) Yogurt is very beneficial for the digestive system, and I started giving my second baby yogurt around 6-8 months. And FYI you can just feed her plain yogurt, or natural vanilla yogurt, which is much better value than yo-baby.

My son loved vanilla yogurt mixed the Mango Dessert from Gerber. Yum!

I also have an 8 month-old right now and he gets fussy when we're all eating at the table without him. I let him sit on my lap (or at the high chair) at the table with us, and it makes him happy when I let him drink water out of my cup. Or you can just feed your baby her "mush" while the rest of you are eating dinner. Have fun!

My pediatrician had me start when my baby was 11 weeks old. He said that a Dutch study indicated that starting kids on yogurt at a young age led to lower chances of having allergies and asthma later on. This was back in 2004/2005. Now, not all Americans believe in this so it all depends on your dr. We've always tried to buy whole milk yogurt because our munchkin is on the skinny side.

My daughter had a really bad yeast infection when she was 7 months. My doctor told me to feed her a little yogurt and if she did fine with it she could hae it on a regulary basis. She loved it and still has a yogurt sometime threwout the day.

Yogurt *can* be hard on a developing digestive system. I waited until about 11 months to give yogurt.
Some thoughts about Yo-Baby.....it's cleverly packaged junk food. It has organic sugar in it which tricks people into thinking it's healthy. Sugar is sugar no matter what. If you choose to do yogurt plain or whole milk varieties that sweeten with fruit juice are much better quality.
At that age my daughter loved steamed apples with cinnamon, diced baked sweet potato with a little sea salt, avocados, pureed white beans or lentils with a tiny bit of sea salt and garlic powder. Babies love flavor so don't be afraid to lightly season with sea salt or herbs.
I also steamed pears, peaches, etc.....you can puree almost any veggie or fruit. Zucchini was a favorite of my son's, believe it or not!

I have given my 8 month old Yo Baby, and it seems like it makes him spit up more? I believe the restriction is only on whole milk, not other dairy products, because the process of making yogurt or cheese processes a lot of the milk proteins that are hard on their tummies.

I make most of my son's food. www.wholesomebabyfood.com is a fantastic resource for when to give different foods & how to prepare them. I make apples, pears, plums & peaches and squash & sweet potatoes by peeling, cubing & simmering in a little water until very soft, and then pureeing in my little 3-cup food processor. Lately I have also used my pampered chef grater with the bigger holes to make a chunkier texture. Green beans & peas are also good, but you have to push them through a sieve to get the right texture at first.

As far as finger foods go, my son loves tiny pieces of bread, tiny cubes of cheese (or shredded cheese), cheerios, rice krispies & gerber puffs. Bananas are another good choice, and one way to make them less slippery is to smash some cheerios or rice krispies to powder & then roll small pieces of banana in them. My little guy also does not have any teeth yet, but I think they actually use their gums to chew up food until they get molars anyway. I read somewhere that a good size guideline for finger food is smaller than the tip of their fingers.

My daughter is 10 months old now but she too started getting bored with baby food when she was about 7 or 8 months old. If she is sitting up by herself I would try some wagon wheels, yogurt melts, puffs, or crunchies. My daughter absolutely loves them. As far as yogurt, my mother always gives my daughter things before me because she had four kids so she is not scared like I am, but she gave my daughter yogurt when she was about 6 or 7 months old and she absolutely loves it. She still loves it. She also has thresh and a yeast infection a month or so ago when she went to a daycare for a couple of days and the doctor actually recommended it. I would say go for it and if she doesnt like or it or has a problem digesting it she will let you know!

My son did not get teeth until 10 months, so I feel your pain. Have you tried mashed avocadoes? My son also loved canned pumpkin, of all things--the stuff you use to make pumpkin pie. Just make sure you are buying the 100% pumpkin, and not the "pie filling", which can have a lot of added stuff. He was also eating scrambled eggs at that age and he did just fine toothless. (Egg whites can be an allergen, so use your own judgement.) We also started feeding him regular oatmeal, just overcooked it a little so it was mushy. Many babies love mashed bananas and mashed potatoes!

I agree with Anne-Marie in that Yo Baby Yogurt is just clever marketing. You are paying an arm and a leg per ounce for a cute name and attractive packaging. If you want to feed her yogurt--and I think you could certainly try it now-- go with some brand that doesn't have any added sweeteners. "Old Home" plain yogurt would be good and inexpensive. (Make sure you buy "plain" and not "vanilla".) If you need to sweeten up the yogurt, consider stirring in a little fruit or veggie puree.

And ditto on using spices! I grew up thinking ketchup was spicy (LOL) and I didn't want my son to be in the same boat. Sprinkle some cinnamon on her cereal or sweet potatoes to start with. My 16 month-old-son ate some chicken curry the other week and didn't even blink an eye. Good luck!
