Westlake Academy for Kindergarten

Hello Moms,

My son will be completing his Preschool by May '09. We have been looking around for private, charter schools and our plan is to move to Roanoke before next May. My husbands peer had good comments on Westlake Academy as she is also looking for a private school. I was wondering if some of the moms from this school can share their experiences and their kids development.

Thanks
M. K

Hello!

I'm a teacher at Westlake Academy, so I'm a bit biased. But, I can tell you in all honesty that the #1 reason I have decided to keep working instead of stay home with my kids is that, as a full-time teacher there, my children will be guaranteed admittance. Otherwise, unless you live in Westlake, you have to go through a lottery system to get in. I really think that the education and social environment at Westlake academy is great. The two kindergarten teachers are wonderful.

One thing: Westlake is not a private school. That's a common misconception. All charter schools in Texas have to be public and open-enrollment. A charter school just means that we have a lot of room to set our own curriculum (though we still have to follow the TEKS) and that we, consequently, get less tax-payer dollars, so we have to do a lot of fundraising. But, there is no fee for attending Westlake, so its not a private school.

Anyway, if you have any specific questions about Westlake Academy, feel free to write me privately!

We have some friends in which all three of their children attend there and they LOVE it. I wish we lived closer as that would be definitely be where I would consider sending my child. If you do not live in Westlake, though, I think it is a little harder to get into. If you are considering it, I would definitely get moving on it soon.

What neither person mentioned was that if you are not in Westlake you had better put your application in now - it is enrollment via lottery system. Residents of Westlake are first and guaranteed - then siblings of already enrolled students - then they do lottery for any remaining spots - last year there were none for kindergarten. My dd went there in the school's first year for 1st grade - then we moved. now we are waitlisted with about 900 other families....
