Weight Gain Question

Hi there - I am 22 weeks pregnant and have only gained 6 pounds. I eat 1950-2050 calories a day from very nutritional sources - and have been eating MUCH healthier than before I was pregnant. I eat a lot of fruit, veggies, salad, milk, cheese, chicken and fish and splurge a little on dessert - usu a small bowl of ice cream. I use a food tracker and my calcium, calories and protein are always in the correct range. However, I am not gaining a lot of weight. I also cut out all white bread and candy (which I was eating a lot before) and just eat a few servings of whole wheat a day and get the rest of my carbs from fruits and such. So, I thought I was doing so well for my baby by eating so well but is it ok that I am not gaining much weight?? My doctor never says anything about my weight except that it "looks good" and my belly measures correctly - baby also measured right at my 20 week ultrasound. So I am just trying to figure out if I need to TRY to gain more or if it will just come as needed w/me eating healthy. Thanks!

What can I do next?

J. if your doctor says your weight is good, then I would not worry, with my first pregnancy I was 132 lbs when i got pregnant, the day of delivery I weighed 182, gained 50 pounds, most of that wasw towards the last few months of my pregnncy at 3 months pregnant i was wearing size 10 designer jeans, you may be one of those women who put your weight on in the end of the pregancy like i was. When I got pregnant the second time i weighed 182 in the bigging of my pregnancy, and I gained less weight with that one but had a bigger longer baby than the first time. All women are different, so trust your doctor, and everything should be OK. J.

Hello, how funny - I am also 22 weeks pregnant and have gained 6 lbs also! You are doing a GREAT job with changing your diet around. I did the same thing and basically eat the same way you do. My goal is to gain the least amount possible to avoid a 2nd C-section. My 1st pregnancy, my son weight 9 lbs. 6 oz and after 23 1/2 hours of labor and pushing for 3 hours a C-section ended my labor. My son was way to big for me to push out, I am a petite person and gained TOO much weight with him. My sister in law just delivered her 3rd son two months ago and she only gained 12 lbs throughtout her entire pregnancy. You are doing great, just drink plenty of water and keep eating all those healthy greens - I am now starting my exercise routine; walking & arm weights. Good Luck and remember the last 3 months is when you gain the most (varies with all pregnancy but that's what I've been reading & experienced in the past)

I think you sound ideal! I have a friend right now who is in the same boat as you (she also works out a lot) but she has only gained about 7lbs and just started showing after 20 weeks. You sound like you are eating great and your Dr. is not worried. I would not worry if I were you!

Enjoy!

WOW, you are doing great!! There is no need for concern. If there was an issue your doctor would say so. Some women do not gain that much weight(envy of all, lol)More weight will come as you get further along. You are healthy and so is the baby. You are definitely on the right track. You do not want to gain unecessary weight. Good luck and congradulations!!

Hi J.,

I'm in the same situation you are - 22 weeks pregnant and have gained about 6 lbs.

If your doctor isn't concerned, don't be worried about it. The 25-30 lbs "guideline" can be misleading as each woman is different. If you're like me, I was very sick during my first trimester, just started being able to eat about a month ago and should start to gain more weight each week. As long as you're trying to be healthy, that's what matters. Sounds like you are doing all the right things.

My only suggestion would be to aim for 80 - 100 grams of protein a day. I know this sounds like a lot. For this birth and my previous, I am using/used the Bradley Method of natural/unmedicated childbirth. Dr. Bradley is a strong supporter of getting enough protein for the health of baby and mom. When I started keeping track of my protein, I realized I was only eating 30-40 grams a day. So, I had to boost my protein intake.

Here's a link to a list of foods that shows the amount of protein per serving. www.learntobirth.com/NutWSreg.pdf

I hope that helps!

I think you are doing great. Your Dr. can usually provide you with a better answer than any generic numbers or figures. I am 20 weeks and have gained 5 lbs, I talked with my Dr. direrctly about it and he says he is very happy with that number. I also have a 2.5 year old and I only gained 13 lbs total with him. I had gained 13 lbs by 6 months with him, but after that not another pound, as my belly grew other parts of my body shrank and within about 2 weeks I was at prepregnancy size. After breastfeeding I was down about 25 lbs from when I first got pregnant. ANd my son was a healthy 7 lbs 3 oz. You are doing great!

If your doctor said that you are fine then I wouldn't stress over it personally but I always used my pregnancies as my opportunity to eat whatever whenever. I won't say that I ate junk food all the time but if I wanted pasta, I ate it, if I wanted some red meat, I ate it, if I wanted a huge bowl of apple jacks, I ate it. I think during pregnancy you should be able to eat whatever you want or whatever you are craving and not worry about it. I craved chocolate milk and anything spicy with my first daughter and I craved anything sweet with my second daughter so I just did what I wanted to do. That could be the reason why I have some extra pounds that I can't get off but I had two healthy girls and they were nice sized.

If it concerns you then try eating more foods with fats in them so that you can pick up more weight. I would ask your doctor how important it is and follow what he says to some degree and the rest follow your heart.
