Weight Gain on Mirena??

I am currently on Ortho Evra (which is the patch) I have not had a problem with it. However I have gained at least 30lbs since I started it apox. a year and 1/2 ago. I don't plan to have anymore kids especially not in the next 5 years. I have read about the IUD and would like to get one, but I was wondering how much weight other women have gained? Id rather be fat then have another child right now until I can convince the Mr. to do away with his swimmers (HA!). But if there is some crazy 50lb weight gain Id rather not go there

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

awesome guys thanks!!! I hope to be switching over to this soon after the beginning of the year! I hope i can loose at least 30 pounds. I just find it weird that i eat so healthy never drink soda. I wanna be comfortable with my body so i guess the patch is not the way to go. CONGRATS SHANNON on the new baby.

I've gained 40 lbs on this thing and I'm not happy about it! LOL But they say it isn't 'because' of it. I'm not buying it. LOL BUT I don't think that you would gain much more weight since you already have had the patch... especially if you have leveled out. I've leveled out... hope to be going 'down' now!!

I gave birth to my daughter with a lot of bleeding which caused me to be anemic. I weighed less after giving birth than when I was pregnant... then I kept losing weight. (daughter was born in March '07) in October '07 I got the Mirena... and I stopped losing.. and slowly started gaining since then.

This comes out about '12 and I won't be getting another one.. Hopefully dh will get snipped, I have 'other' side effects but I'm learning that my body tends to be sensative to birth control

I have been on mirena for nearly four years now and i can honestly say I have not gained weight. In fact, I am smaller now than I was when I got it. I think it's because I'm no longer stressed (I'm a stress-eater) about forgetting to take a pill or getting my depo shot too late. It really has been a wonderful confidence booster for me because I know that part of my life is taken care of.

Hi, N.! I have two girlfriends who have had them removed, not only because of excessive weight gain, but a slew of other things... hormone level issues, thyroid issues, heart problems, depression, and the list goes on. They both had it removed, and they are both finally losing weight and getting back to their old selves again. My gynecologist can't believe that it is still on the market. He doesn't like using it for any of his patients. I would think long and hard, do your research, and make a very educated decision before you use that particular IUD. I wouldn't do it. I wish you the best of luck!

I was on the Mirena for four years and loved it. I didn't gain any weight and after the first month, didn't have any bleeding at all. No cramping..nothing.
*In all fairness, I DID get pregnant with it implanted. It apparently got wrapped up in my uterine tissue. I got pregnant and it was not a viable pregnancy. The doctor's office had NEVER had a woman get pregnant while using Mirena and most their staff had one. It is extremely rare to have this happen. Dh has now had a vas, so I don't have to worry about birth control anymore. However, before the pregnancy, I was VERY happy with it just a fluke in my case.

Hi N.,

I have been on the Mirena since my 6 week check up after having my daughter who is now 19 months. I absolutely love the Mirena and so happy that I decided on getting it. I have tried alot of other birth control methods and always had weight gain. I have not had any weight gain with the Mirena.

I had mirena IUD in place for 4 years (took it out only to have another little one!) I really didn't notice a weight gain at all, actually I lost weight, and also your periods slowly stop, which is GREAT! And it's normal and healthy to not have a period, some people don't understand that, but i've talked to many doctors. So I would highly recommend it!

I have had my Mirena for almost a year....I haven't gained weight on it. The only annoying this is I never know when my period is going to start.. Out of the blue I'll bleed for a day or two. Plus you have to check your strings every so often. Good luck

I have had a Mirena for going on 6 years now (started my 2nd one this year) and I love it. No cramping, no bloating. I haven't gained any weight with it, in fact I have lost weight. While on other birth controls it was difficult for me to lose any weight but with the Mirena I haven't had any problems losing weight.
