Weight Gain Has Slowed down in 4 Month Old, Normal?

My 4 almost 5 month old breastfed baby girl was gaining 2 lbs per month until about a month ago, and has slowed to about a 1 lb gain per month. I have been giving her small amount of infant rice cereal and bananas for about 6 weeks. is this normal for the weight gain to slow this early, i thought it would slow down closer to 6 months. she was 8.1 at birth, and is now 17.2 lbs and will be 5 months in a week.

What can I do next?

hi J.,

it is perfectly normal for your daughters weight to slow down. you have to take into consideration how much is she moving? is she turning/ rolling over? lifting her head up etc. how much taller is she getting? my son was 8.2 at birth and was gaining about 2.5lbs until he started to learn to crawl at 4 months at 6 months he only gained 1lbs but shot up greatly in length at 9 months he gained 3lbs but only grew 1 inch. so what i am saying is your daughter is growing at her own pace. if you have any deep concerns double check with your pediatrician. hope this helps you :)

Yes, it's normal. The general weight gain that's expected is for your baby to double her weight by 4 months and triple it by one year. It looks like she's close to doubling it, so at one year she should be about 24 pounds, give or take.

Your baby sounds healthy and normal. The older they get, the slower they gain weight. From 9 - 12 months, my son only gained 7 ounces.

As long as she is eating well, pooping daily and peeing several times a day, you have nothing to worry about.

I think your baby sounds just fine. The docs like to make you think there is a "normal" (read: growth curve), but every baby is so different. My baby gained well until 4 months and then plateaued until 10! She was healthy, eating, pooping, active, etc... just a peanut. Today she is still way below the charts, but gaining fine. We did have lots of tests done for thyroid and other issues, but nothing was wrong. Get her tested if you need to, but know that she could be just doing things at her own pace like many other babies.
