Weight Gain During Pregnancy - Agawam,MA

Just a quick question on weight gain...I had my first child, a boy, in August of 2006 and put on 27 pounds. My son was 8 pounds/5 ounces. I am currently 35 weeks pregnant with my second child, a girl, and so far have put on 12 pounds. I am almost 5'8" and my pre-pregnancy weight this second time was 174 pounds. Has anyone else did really good with their weight gain and still had a good size baby? My doctors said I am right on target with my weight gain and the baby is measuring perfect. It just seems like the norm is for people to put on so much weight these days, that when I tell people my weight gain I think they think I am starving myself, which I am not. I eat my 3 meals a day, with snacks in between, and usually am bad at night and have ice cream before bed. I do walk during my lunch breaks at work and occasionally at home. Plus, I have my almost 3-year-old to take care of. Thanks!

Your weight gain sounds great for your pre-pregnancy weight and how far along you are, congratulations! It's actually much more dangerous to gain too much weight than to gain too little during pregnancy, and if the baby were suffering it would normally show in your measurements at checkups. You would also probably feel excessively tired/hungry, and it sounds like you're doing a good job of staying active.

Good luck with baby #2!

No worries! It's better for you and the baby to NOT put on too much weight. I only gained a total of 16 pounds with my daughter, who was perfectly healthy and over seven pounds at birth. I was probably about 10 pounds over weight when I got pregnant, so the baby just soaked up those extra pounds!Your doctor said you're good, so you're good. They would tell you to increase your caloric intake if they thought you weren't getting enough. For some of us, pregnancy just works for our weight rather than against us. After having a second baby and breastfeeding, I continue to carry less wight than I did before I had children. So, after you have that beautiful baby, just enjoy fitting into your pre-baby clothes sooner than most!

I hope you have a wonderful labor and delivery and that your transition to 2 is smooth!

Best wishes,
A. G.

Hi there. I only put on 15lbs during my pregnancy and my DD weighted 7lbs 7 ounces - and she came more than a week early.
I did not starve myself either. It was probably the healthiest I ever ate in my life though - I thought - this is not about just me anymore. But I ate a lot of food. I was hungry.
As long as the doc says you are ok, don't worry! Good luck!
