My husband and I got married 5yrs ago at City Hall. We recently attended my sisters wedding and on our way home he mentioned that he wanted us to get married again in front of our family and friends. The wierd thing is my husband has not told his entire family that we are married, though i suspect that they all know. Anyway my question is would i call this ceremony a renewal of vows or a wedding?

What can I do next?

That sounds like a wonderful thing to do:-) My husband and I did the same thing, married at City Hall but 5 months later renewed our vows in Nassau on the beach. It would be considered a renewal of vows anytime that you actually are officially married before a justice of the peace or a minister and then you do it again.

Why not call it both?

I would have to say it is a wedding ceremony. You are married legally, but any church will tell you, you are not married in the "eyes of God" so I would definatly say it would be a wedding ceremony! Good luck and have fun!

its a renewal of vows.....a marriage at city hall is a marriage by law. a reception can be done later at an anniversary or whatever and you are renewing your vows.

I got married almost fourteen years ago to my husband at City Hall. And I am going to someday soon have a WEDDING WHERE I RENEW MY VOWS! HA! so simple. Well, maybe...I want it to be big and I need to look beautiful. I am curious why your husband didn't tell everyone. We eloped but told everyone afterwards. I think you can call it a wedding. But you can always tell the truth. Won't they be amazed at how long you were married? Not a lot of people can do that in this day and age. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WONDERFUL MARRIAGE! S.

My Aunt did this 2 years ago, and she so to speak celebrates both of them. She personally loves the one with the "church" date just because, but of course I would probably go by the 1st date just because of your child. But yippee, you could celebrate two dates instead of one! How nice!!!! But why in the world wouldn't your husband tell his whole family that you are married??? Seems strange, but I am sure you guys (or him) had his reasons???!!!! All the best, and congratulations!
