Moms, I have set a goal for 2011 to work for myself. I need some advice. I am thinking of becoming a wedding/event planner. I know you dont have to be licensed for this but, in my opinion being certified looks better. If any of you moms out there are event/wedding planners please give any information that you have.
I would love to do some volunteer work for any wedding/event planners as well. Have someone take me under their wing.
I'm not a wedding planner, but I know the Dallas Community Colleges have a certification program. I read they have guests come, that are in the industry. I think that would probably be the easiest way to build contacts and information. I'm sure they have a network of people you can contact upon certification. They have student aide for their certification programs, too. Good luck :)
Check you local community college as others have noted.
Also, why dont' you consult with people who are in the business now. Maybe you can start as an assistant and learn the business. Places with event planners are hotels, country clubs, etc.
As with any business... you need a solid business plan, good tax accountant, good legal counsel and $$$.

I would also think taking classes at a local community college or vo-tech would be a good idea. Not only are you learning things you are meeting people who are taking classes that may in the future be of use to you. Networking is a big part of having an successful home based business.
