We Need to Get Out of the House

My daughter is 10 months old and I need to find things that are free or very inexpensive and close to home for us to do during the weekdays. I checked all the local libraries and they all have storytime when my daughter naps. Which is weird. You would think that all kids her age nap about the same time as her and that is when all the infant stories are. She naps from 930-11 and 230-4. I would love to get her into swimming or music or anything for that matter. I just really do not have the money right now. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks a million in advance.

So What Happened?

I found a singer named Jeannie Mack. She is awesome. She plays her guitar and sings at Finagle a Bagel on Mon and Wed in Swampscott. It is free and there were a lot of kids and moms there. Thanks everyone- keep the ideas coming. I know I am not the only mom out there that needs to be involved in activities. She has a website too with other locations that she sings.

Libraries are a great place to visit, especially during the winter! You don't have to go during story time. All the libraries with children's rooms that we have visited have fun, age-appropriate toys, and of course lots of books! Don't count them out just because the class schedule doesn't meet your needs.

When my twins were little, we also went to the mall a lot. Just as another free, climate-controlled place to go. We would go to the pet store & say hi to the animals, go to the book store or toy store... (mostly because I have an older daughter too, that wanted to got to those stores!) Babies are just happy to have a change of scenery. And it only has to cost a lot of money if you let it! :)

M.,

I don't know the Swampscott area very well but the local kids toy store or book stores sometimes do storytime or music time. You could also check with the local Y or boys and girls club.

You could google stay at home mom's for your area to see if there is anything going on. Meetup.com is another website to see if there is a group in your area.

You could ask your ped if they know of another in the area for babies besides the library.

You could look to see if there is another on Craigslist for stay at home mom's in your area.

You could post an add of sorts in the library or at the playground. Stating stay at home mom looking for other stay at home mom's with babies about this age, etc. Set up a new email account for this so you don't have to worry about anyone having your 'real' email account. You could also ask at the library about other mom's that are able to make the storytimes. Maybe get your daughter up early one day and just go at the end of the story time and see if you can make friends.

Hope this helps,
L. M

Hi M.,

Happy Thanksgiving!

I haven't gone yet, but I heard from another mom that the Y in has some great programs. It's only $10/months for a child membership - you don't have to join for the kids to enjoy the activities. It's a great deal. I think they are just about to open one in M'head, too.

My daughter loves going for walks in the stroller. The weather hasn't been cooperative lately, so I've been walking her around at the mall. But as long as it's not raining, we've been going outdoors, bundled up, with a cover on the stroller to keep the wind out!
I'm definitely curious to see what others suggest!

There is a singer who does a sing along at Finagle a Bagel in Brookline, and she also does it at Finagle a Bagel in Swampscott. I just checked her website and she does it there on Mon. and Wed. Check her site--her name is Jeannie Mack and my daughter loves it! http://www.jeanniemack.com/schedule.htm

Subscribe to bostoncentral.com for special events and activities in greater Boston. Also sometimes Gymboree has free classes on occasion. The Lila Guide is a good thing to check out too (www.lilaguide.com). You can search for things in your area. Also it might be a good way to join or set up a play group with other area moms. They are the best way to find things to do. Good luck and have fun! It can be tricky to find these things but keep looking, they are out there!
