We Need a New Mattress

Hi All,

We are in need of a new mattress. Do you love or hate yours? If so, what kind do you have? We're willing to fork over the cash if it's a good investment. Our current mattress wasn't very expensive but has only lasted about 5 years and is no longer comfortable - any advice is appreciated!

I hope you're all safe and warm.

N.

Bought a sleep number about 7 years ago. We bought the one with all the bells and whistles.
It's the one that moves up and down so you can read in bed or have your legs elevated. It also has a massage feature. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. I had abdominal surgery about 5 years ago and I couldn't sit up on my own. Instead of always asking for help I just pushed the little button and up I went. Same goes for laying down. My husband was not a fan at 3 in the morning when I started moving the bed so I could pee, but he adjusted. Two years ago while I was pregnant it was nice to lower the number on my side of the bed so I could sleep on my side/almost belly. My husband once again laughed at me cause if he got close to my side of the bed he would fall in. When I was breast feeding it also came in handy lifting the back so I didn't need as many pillows.

The massage feature is kinda a waste. It worked wonderfully in the store but then it was also on a cement floor. We have wood floors so the thing vibrates the whole room and is so loud. When you get one feature you have to take the other.
If you have the money to blow on a bed I would give this one a shot

You can sign up for consumer reports for one month (I think it's about $3 or $4) and they had some good information on mattresses when we were looking a few years ago. I suggest it because you really can't go by brand name - the models are different for every store.

That said, we are very happy with our middle of the road priced traditional mattress, which we bought at Montgomery Wards 9 years ago, before they went out of business. It's a Sealy Posturepedic (plus some other model name tacked on that I can't remember). I also know several people who are very happy with their Sleep Number (air) beds.

We have a pillow top mattress, (I think Sealy) but we have been using one of those memory foam toppers for a while now. That thing is so comfy! I love it and it has really benefitted my hubby for his sore body.

I know I sound like a commercial, but I love our sleep number bed! We purchased it about 1.5 years ago and neither one of us have ever slept better! It takes maybe 2 months to find the right firmness that you want, but it is so worth it. I no longer toss and turn and my hands don't fall asleep any longer. Also now that I am pregnant, I have recently lowered my sleep number so that the bed can sort of mold around me and I can lay on my side comfortably - I remember being so horribly uncomfortable with my other beds/pregnancies - and now I am able to sleep as long as my bladder will let me!

We tried a number of mattresses and are very happy with our Simmons Beautyrest. Personally, I avoid the pillow-top mattresses because the cushioning on the top will wear out before the springs do and then you'll have "dents" where you and your husband sleep. Better, in my opionion, to get a very cushy mattress pad or a thing to go under the pad instead, so you can replace it when it wears out. We've had ours for 5 years now and it's still going strong...

We tried out the tempurpedic types, the sleep number, etc too. Liked the tempurpedic ones but they're really $$. Didn't like the sleep number at all. But you'll have to try for yourself to decide.

I don't actually have one myself, but I've slept on a memory foam mattress at my mother's and I think I got the best night's sleep of my life. I'm saving up for that!

Every mattress in my house is Stearns and Foster. They are fabulous. Yes they are more expensive but I think the are worth it and I have had mine for over 5 years and expect to be using the same mattresses for many years to come. One of my friends who occassionally stayed at my place, just loved them but then didn't want to spend the money and so bought a different brand but boy did she regret that. Eventually, she went out and bought a Stearns and Foster.

I have the Serta Perfect Day. It is AMAZING! We spent a bit of money, but I have never had a mattress which I enjoy as much. We tried a tempurpedic, but it wasn't for us. It just wasn't firm enough, and the Serta has both foam and springs which gives that firmness while molding to your body. Your best option is to go into a mattress store and try them all out. Then go home and price out the one you want.

Hi N., We are very happy with ours -- a Sealy or Simmons (can't remember, sorry) "Hotel Tight Top." We've had it for over five years and it is still quite comfy. Hope you are warm too!

We have a Serta, and have been very disappointed with it. It was in the middle price point and a plush (not firm, not pillow top soft). My husband is a little larger and before our one year warranty was up it was already sagging in the middle. We had them come and look at it but they stretch a string from one side to the other as tight as they can and it wasn't sagging enough in there opinion (it has to be at least 1 inch and we were a few hairs short). We have been told by a few people to buy Sealy Posturepedic or Stearns & Foster.
