Ways to Break up Mucous

We just got out of the hospital with my 4 month old for whopping cough. She was in there 10 days. My son, who is 23 months, got it as well and has been recently dealing with coughing so hard til he throws up. It's every night. I've cut back on sugars and dairy, but it doesn't seem to help much. My husband is sitting in the bathroom with him now with the shower on for steam. I just gave him some garlic/tumeric mix to help. For about 3 weeks now he's had this violent cough until throwing up. He has gone through the round of antibiotics now we are just dealing with the cough. Any thoughts on how to get rid of the mucous? I'll be taking him to the doctor tomorrow because it's just getting really sad :(

Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have terrible coughing spells like that. I cannot imagine a child going through it :( When i shut the bathroom door, i steam the shower and the sink, and also shove a towel under the door. My inhaler helps a little. Also, when i get steriods they help too. Hopefully the dr can give him something like that to help. I keep a humidifier in my room and sleep on a ton of pillows to keep me proped up. (i also put the "tootsie roll" pillows under my arms to keep me propped up). A fan blowing near my face helps too. A hot cup of decaf tea, sipped slowly sometimes helps also.

I am so sorry. I hope i helped a little. It really is terrible :( I hope he feels better soon!!

I usually ask the doc for some Xophenex for the nebulizer and do treatments every 4 hours. I also add a vial of sterile water to each treatment. This makes moisture in the mucus and makes it easier to get up.

I think that if the doc will write a prescription for your son to have a portable nebulizer that would be great. Ours was covered by insurance and it is a Pari portable one. It has a battery pack that will run for a long time on a single charge or you can plug it in the car cigarette lighter or in a regular plug inside the house.

A breathing treatment makes the bronchial tubes open up and the medication helps them stay open for a longer time. The med also has water mixed in it so that makes the goo more runny. Adding another vial of straight water really helps our grand kids to be able to get the goo up.

I think that if the pediatrician won't help you with the breathing treatment I'd make an appointment with an ENT or another doc that does more upper respiratory issues

I do the Vicks baby rub for the under 2's, as well as a Vicks steam vaporizer. The one I have actually has slots for inserts you can buy that are also okay for kids under 2. Unfortunately, most of the OTC stuff isn't recommended for the itty bitties.

Hydration, drinking water.

And yes, taking him back to the Doc tomorrow.
Try keeping him upright... young kids like that cannot spit out mucous, hence it tends to accumulate in the throat... and they can choke etc.
And it triggers the gag/coughing reflex more.

Coughs are either from the sinuses (post nasal drip) or the chest, or both.

Check him for any further complications... hopefully not Bronchitis... or Pneumonia.
Both of which can happen even from a cold that does not go away.
This has happened to even me and my Mom.
Bronchitis is another complication of colds if it lingers etc. And it can be contagious....
Be sure to take him to the Doc tomorrow.

Coughing like that, that bad, is not good.

Pertussis, is very dangerous.
He needs to see a Doctor right away or go to the ER.
He has been coughing badly like that for 3 weeks already... that is too long.

Mucinex, Robitussin - Guaifenesin thins the mucus making it easier to cough up.
He needs to stay hydrated - water, pedialyte, chicken soup broth.
No dairy (milk) for right now - it thickens mucus in some people - try him on rice milk for awhile.
Humidifier, hot steamy showers, warm bath will help.
Get a steam inhaler - I got one the last time I had a bad cough and it really helped me a lot.

The mucus drips down from his sinuses - see if you can rinse him out with warm sailine using a neti pot or a bulb syringe.
Vick's vapor rub on his chest (the on the feet thing with socks never did anything for me).
A heating pad on low on his chest might help.
I'm glad you are going back to the doctor - keep working with him closely.

Warm water with a slice of organic lemon.

I boil my water every morning and drop in my lemon on the way out the door. I also give it to our girls at the first sight of any mucus our cold coming on, I add some ginger root as well.

This is what I do -

Lot of water
No milk
Steam in the restroom
Honey with some ginger root or turmeric
Saline mist for stuffy nose
Vicks vaporub on chest, back and under the feet with socks on
Humidifier with the vicks inserts

I would suggest asking your doctor about using a nebulizer. It's not a regular cold , whooping cough is scary. Nebs really help clear the airway, help the little ones breathe much better and also helps with the non stop coughing.

What you guys usually do and a little Vicks is not going to help these children. They have Pertussis. Not some post nasal drip. :)

I am surprised the hospital did not give you anything to get through the coughing spells. I wonder if a nebulizer would help? I think steam is a good idea and giving lots of water. They are too young for any cough type meds. I wonder if there are any herbs that would help, that you could add to some tea to give them?

Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin the mucus. I've also heard that pineapple might help.

First, has he had his pertussis series? His airways are inflammed thus producing the mucus. You can get one of those vibrating messagers to use on his chest to help break up the mucus. Also I think he needs cough meds and updrafts. They will help soothe the muscle in the airways. Good luck

Poor little guy! Well, poor everybody! I don't have much to offer, except to eliminate dairy altogether, not just cut back. Keep his throat moist, and keep him hydrated.

Bless your family.
